Great to hear from brother, I’m March 5th 1974 - so we were transformed by the movie at about the same time exactly. The music went into my bones and damn well stayed there thank you very much! I was 17 when this movie came out on video in 1987. I graduated high school that next spring, put my sax and my trumpet in the attic, and got myself a guitar. I still love to attempt this song, which sounds simple, but I have not seen anyone match Cooder's smoothness, and phrasing. Although I would not call this "perfect", it sure is close and better than anyone I have seen play this in 38 years. Great job. Thanks, now I have to grab my Mexi strat again and toil away......

Hey Thomas, cheers I got as close as I could! Up until recently I always thought I had misremembered the song from the film as the people playing it online played it differently. I realised recently (after many years) that they were playing the version from the soundtrack and not the movie! Anyway thanks for the comment.

@@JeremyJames_studio I bought the soundtrack on CD right after I watched the movie the first time, and I have had it on a playlist on Spotify and I still listening 30+ years later. so I've heard the soundtrack version most of the time as well. Thank you so very much. After decades of searching finally the right version. The one on the soundtrack is not bad but from my view this one from the movie is way better. Was your action raised any? Did you do a new nut to get full/flat contact with every string. I’ve struggled playing slide on a sharp fret contour neck like 7.5 or 9”radius… Beautiful job on this Jeremey!!! Thanks for sharing it!
@JeremyJames_studio Жыл бұрын
Hey Tader, action is about average, bit higher than that perhaps. Yes I struggle with the radius of the neck as well! No special nut used, but I do make adjustments to the bridge and try and flatten things out some. I think some of the appeal of slide guitar is in the struggle…you can hear me clunking around in lots of spots on this take but it kind of works. By the way have you tried flatwounds? They’re more forgiving and sound better as well for slide. This video was rounds but when I changed them later, I got much closer - especially that bit comes into the 5th fret (c). Maybe give them a whirl if you haven’t
@JeremyJames_studio Жыл бұрын
I read your second reply via email but can't see it here for some reason. Anyway you're right flatwounds aren't cheap, but I would say as they don't really ever have that new string sound they last! To be honest I don't change the two guitars I have with flatwounds. I'd definitely try them on your 90s tele. If you try them out, can you let me know how you find them? I don't want to go recommending them far and wide without a little feedback cause they do have a completely different feel/ sound to them. And you need to dial in your amp appropriately and spend a little time adjusting 👍

I’m recording a princeton reverb with a captor x....so I just use the head and then the captor x models the speaker. Saves me mucking about with trying to mic at apartment amp levels. From the captor x I just plug into the interface and record in mono. easy set up. I’ve just bought a helix stomp as well...and from a quick play, it sounds pretty good as well. It can be used as an interface, so for people without an amp or interface this would be the standout solution
