The set up is soooo much better than old school jumps. He has a bail out to the right, wind at his back, big wide landing area that is ABOVE the launch ramp (makes his actual drop from the peak of his jump less) and it's all dirt for softer landing... Oh, and the bike is waaay better for jumping as well. Still incredible, but yea, preparation is what made this possible.

@hkjl55334 жыл бұрын
need more light every way imaginable 13 inches of travel not 30. He made motorcycles more popular and took the bad boy imagine away a little. But he was not very skilled. When you watch him ride you can tell he doesn’t quite care whether he lands it. I’ve cleared 90ft on a 78’ Suzuki gs1000 on a pavement step down, it’s not incredibly hard. And he had access to better bikes.
@hkjl55334 жыл бұрын
need more light every way imaginable you’re completely wrong about everything you said. All of it is factually incorrect. It’s 13 inches of travel not 30. His xr750 did not weigh 1000 lbs.....more like 340, and a 450 mx bike weighs 240, not even close to quadruple, not even close to double the weight. Calculus existed for evel just as it does for us today, we all are using the same equations to build jumps. You don’t need to use a computer, it’s an formula, it can be done on paper. And last but not least... anyone, I mean anyone can launch a bike off a ramp for money and hope they don’t die.
@CamaroKidd20222 жыл бұрын
What Evil was doing with a bike with hardly any suspension is way more ballsy then what anyone has done since. That bike he jumped with did not have 13 inches of travel either. It was way less then that and 100 lbs more of weight makes a lot of difference. A dirt bike is way easier to jump with them the street bike Evil used

@VeritableSmorgasbord4 жыл бұрын
Currently people are trying to break the "official" record. This jump and Alex Harvill's 425 foot jump are apparently unofficial. I don't know who's to say what's official...a Guinness record definitely is, but Maddison's 378 jump was apparently not Guinness-approved because the Guinness record is still his 351 ft. jump from 2008. The 378 jump was at a Red Bull event, though, so I guess it counted as official. Then again, he went 391 in practice for that event, probably the same ramp setup, so what's stopping that from being the official record? Many questions remain.

If he used a CR500af or KX500af there would be no need toe such long runway. It took way to long for the 4puke to get to speed...

How did he make it so far? The engineering, math and preparation to jump like that with such huge ballz, is insanity.
@yamahakid450f Жыл бұрын
When coming up with a new ramp design, there's a lot of math, but there is no math involved with speed to hit it, he's got no speed-o anyway. Yeah they record it each jump, but it's all feel, just like any new jump you're going off feel and the sound of the engine, especially if someone hits something first and then they either tow you over or you just go hit it after hearing where they were at in the RPMs. To start doing long distance, they'll set it at say 100+Ft to the sweetspot, which is simple with those ramps, then keep pushing it back more and more until they're at where they are now. Which that wouldn't take long if he got to hit it over and over, what takes a long time is inbetween jumps they'll change stuff like gearing, take away teeth on the rear for more top speed but less torque, then the biggest change which is suspension settings. To do big changes like spring rate and valving, you have to send the fork and shock off, so then you lose multiple days right there. Then also keep hitting the same distance and mess with compression dampening and rebound to see if it helps get you more comfortable before moving it back again. Then its repeat until you have the setting you know can reach 350-400, of course then you have to adjust for either tail wind or head winds, on that i wouldn't jump with a strong head wind and not a chance with a side wind... if you've got your weight slightly to one side or a few millimeters off being straight, on a jump that big, that turns into many ft... it would not take much wind to blow you completely off the landing, its very narrow for a jump like that. But all That is providing you dont go down, break parts, spokes, or Taco a wheel somewhere along the way on landing... which reminds me, after every jump he's putting the bike on the stand to check and tighten spokes, if not a complete bolt check, atleast on the bar mounts, triple tree, and front axel pinch bolts. I have to atleast check my spokes a couple times a day just sessioning regular comp ramps set at 75ft, especially if i ever clip the knuckle with the rear or go a bit deep, or if they're new wheels or spokes. And quite honestly, when it's a jump this size, there's not much timing involved, yes it's massive, takes a lot of time to get there, and the consequences absolutely massive, but it's 5th gear as fast as the bike can go, that's not 'timing'. The hard part is keeping it level on a jump that big, after a certain point, you can no longer use the clutch and hit the rear brake to bring the front end down, you can lock that bitch up and it's still going to keep coming over backwards. So the whole time after leaving the lip, he has to keep it level by continuously alternate betweenvbrake tapping so he doesn't reach the point of no return while also blipping the throttle every now and again to keep it level. If you speed up the rear wheel it increases the inertia and helps bring the front up, or in a flip it'll help it come around if you're slightly under rotating. On a regular ramp, you can basically get the bike almost completely looped out vertically and still be able to brake tap and get the front down, not on a jump like that. That exact thing happened to Axell when he was trying to set a gap record, he had the rear locked up and the front end kept floating up and he landed rear first, when it slapped the front end down it ripped the bars from his hands and he got absolutely shit whipped into the ground then ragdolled.

Pretty cool but I dont like how they land higher than where they take off from on a lot of today's jumps, also the landing area is HUGE unlike the motorcycle jumpers of old who had a much smaller landing target and took more skill. Evel, Robbie, Gary Wells and Johnny Airtime are my kinda guys.

Obviously what he is doing is quite dangerous and impressive, BUT the huge size of his earthen work landing rap makes it much easier/safer to pull off than smaller wooden landing ramps that many of the world's daredevil jumpers have used in the past.

It's cool, and impressive, but with such a hugely elevated landing, at a certain point you negate most of the danger if your landing ramp is so incredibly long
