Agree entirely Josh, also, I don’t think Jim Knowles, or Chip Kelley take the job if they don’t think Ryan Day can handle it. I don’t think Brian Hartline stays either. I don’t think Locksley comes over either. They all could make money anywhere but they chose to come under the Ryan Day umbrella.

I have met Ryan Day (briefly) related to his charity work. He is a very likable guy. He is a very caring person. He loves his players and he teaches them how to be good men. He loves his family. He loves his community even when his community treats him like garbage. He doesn’t make excuses. He doesn’t blame his players or his coaches or the system or anything other than himself. He gives credit to his team when he wins and he takes responsibility on himself when he loses. I have always thought he was great, we are lucky to have him, and that’s a hill I would die on and did all through the bashing after Michigan. I thank Michigan for that loss because it made us dig deep and find a way to be better. Ryan Day is a great man and I hope now everyone comes to appreciate it.

I didn't really hate Urban Meyer when he coached OSU. Now I started following college football just when his tenure at Florida ended, where most of those skeletons are from, so I never really saw those teams play and heard those headlines in real time, but I didn't hate him. I don't like Ryan Day cause he just comes off the wrong way, I can't explain it. After his team beat ND in South Bend he immediately went to talking shit about an 85 year old man that just voiced his opinion. Also like to clown the guy for having a beard made of pubes and just for men, and the fact that he inherited a golden situation in Columbus with a top 3 team in the country roster wise every year and he's underachieved. But what do I know, he just won a national championship and I'm just a nobody voicing my opinion in a YT comment section, I'd be foolish to not trade places with him

Notice how he never says a word for all the talk about him, but he’s gonna respond attacking his guys. All his players love him & that’s why. Also search his coaching history, he wasn’t handed crap. Personally, I’ve always believed the reason they hate Ohio State is because unlike literally every other program they don’t have 5 win seasons, 500 seasons. It’s only happened one time and that was because we lost our coach right before the season. It might’ve been even during the season. Luke Fickell and we had I believe a seven and six record. But take away interim coaches and we average 10 wins a year for a long time. No other program can say that not even Alabama.

People hate Ohio because of how the fans in Ohio are. No one has ever had an enjoyable experience with Ohio fans/people. Their fans are more West Virginia or SEC than B10/Midwest. I’m one of those guys calling for him to be axed after the Michigan game and I was at the natty. Day deserves some grace. He NEEDS to beat Michigan though, for his own sake. He’s a great coach and likely a hall of famer. But he’s got to beat TTUN because you can’t rely on winning a natty every year. It’s not realistic and it’s the only way to cope with a loss the last week of the regular season. Great coach, great guy, real human being, deserves respect, still needs to win The game.

Exactly. I easily also calling for him to be fired immediately following The Game, and even then I knew they would win the title. They were clearly heads and shoulders above the field. That 4 game stretch makes The Game result even more unbelievable and unacceptable. He absolutely has to win The Game next year. But it's not personal. I think he's a very likable nice guy. The rivalry is not the same as it was before the playoffs, especially the 12 team playoffs and conference expansion. There was a time when Michigan and Ohio State were the only two teams in the B1G capable of winning at the national level. Winning that game was critical for the season, that is no longer the case as evident by Ohio State winning the national championship this season. Also, Michigan shit on the rivalry when they decided to cheat to win and destroyed the integrity of the game. Only fans who haven’t evolved with the modern game of football still think it’s a “must win” game. Does that mean fans who have evolved don’t care if Ohio State wins that game? Of course not. But, we’re not going to run off a top 3 head coach in college football with high integrity. That’s insane.

If the 12 team playoffs didn't exist, this would be the 4th straight year he lost to Michigan, didn't win the Big Ten or make the playoffs, with arguably the most talented team Ohio State has fielded in decades. The criticism was absolutely justified.

@@mechmat12345 The 12 team playoff happened. Day made the playoffs. Day won the national championship. Michigan is in the waiting period for the NCAA to rule on their punishment for cheating. It is their third offense and covers a three year period. Just like Day winning the national championship silenced his critics, when the NCAA announces Michigan’s punishment, the losses to Michigan will have an a blemish, that’s if the NCAA doesn’t vacate the wins.

I don't hate him, it just doesn't feel like he's grown up, so to speak, & doesn't feel like a great leader for how to think, act, feel & behave better is all. He's a huge proponent of mental growth, it just doesn't feel like there's been a lot of that or that he's teaching that to his staff & players with the way they respond in things like interviews. We've had so many tremendous examples recently of exceptional teachers & leaders & maybe they set the bar unfairly high. Coach Day feels like a great motivator rather than a great example of how to grow, think & speak better every day, & I think that's what bugs, including after losing to Michigan & winning a national title. 💯

When you look at his story (outside of football) and how it affected him from his pre-adolescence all the way through his late 30s and early 40s, you understand why he has a Michigan problem and why the comments Josh Gattis and Jim Harbaugh made about him cut him so deeply and affect how he coaches that game. There was a College Gameday interview where his wife Christina said point blank that losing his father at such a young age gave Ryan a chip on his shoulder because he felt he had to hide his emotions about it and that he always had to prove how mentally tough he was because of the stigma surrounding mental health, especially in that time period. He felt as though showing his emotions about his father and his mental health made him look weak. So when an opposing coach of a major rival says he's weak, or soft, or says he was handed something, and says it to the entire world, yeah, he's gonna take that EXTREMELY personally. It explains the Lou Holtz situation, it explains why Ryan is so (overly) hellbent on beating Michigan to the point of obsession, and why he's so stubbornly eager to prove his team is tough and can win a matchup physically.

A huge Buckeye fan here, I understand how he can come off as unlikable. He can be a emotionally undisciplined. His insecurity is palpable at times (Lou Holtz comment). It's part of the learning curve. The reality is... who cares what others think about him or his beard or... y'all can have a coke and a smile while we will call him champ: Nice Rushmore:.. Woody. Tressel. Meyer. Day.

If he's unlikable it's because there is a strong perception that despite being a successful coach, he is not a great coach. He inherited a team which was already a powerhouse and then proceeded to tread water for several years. I'm not sure OSU of 2024 is actually a stronger program than Urban Meyer's teams, but everyone else seems to have taken a step back (Alabama/Georgia/Michigan this year). He wins a lot of games but always has the most talented squad, but still finds a way to lose to less talented teams. The perception is that Day does less with more. Just what it is.

After the natty Urban proceeded to lose to MSU to miss a playoff, get blownout by Clemson in the playoff, blownout by Iowa to miss a playoff & finally blownout by Purdue to miss a playoff. Whatever u think of Day’s run before his natty u must also think of Urban, there is no excuse for Urban that shouldn’t be granted to Day

The problem with that narrative is that Urban Meyer was the same way at Ohio State. How many games did his teams actually win with equal or inferior talent? Maybe two?

One of the greatest day in American history. January 20, 2025 will be remembered as a glorious trifecta. We celebrated MLK life and dream, at 12 noon in DC America was liberated from the evil and wickedness that darkened America for 4 long horrific years, and before midnight in Atlanta, the great state of Ohio, HC Ryan Day and THE Ohio State Buckeyes were redeemed and crowned 2024 CFP National Champions. American by birth and a Buckeye by the grace of God. O-H

Has the slightest fall off from a now hall of fame coach. In my opinion only one bad loss to TTUN. Sure as buckeye fans we religiously think about winning that one game every season. However, Ryan Day is a great coach that preaches the right things for young men to hear. Personally I wish that was what mattered most to us. Not to mention he just won us a natty… Build the statue!

Go Buckeyes! National Champs! I like how the 12-team playoff gives schools an extra chance to redeem themselves! Ohio State proved why the expansion to 12 teams was extremely important! Ohio State proved they could beat 2 SEC schools, Oregon in a rematch and Notre Dame! I hope that they keep the 12-team playoff format for next season as well!

Bc Day showed zero class over the last 4 years when it came to losing to Michigan. In 23, he was def involved behind scenes running to league office/ncaa w Stalions shit and played into the “cheating” narrative before Michigan was given any due process. He’s acted like osu was wronged in the losses to Michigan instead of taking ownership and giving Michigan their due. He has zero respect towards Michigan as a program and that attitude has permeated the culture at Osu and is the biggest reason they have lost 4 in a row. They act like they are entitled to beating Michigan every year. This year he doubled down on the revenge arc and it blew up in his face, watched and did absolutely nothing as his team started a brawl after game that cause people to get fuckin maced and took 0 accountability for it after. Got off scott free w zero suspensions or reprimands on that one which a joke. Since then he’s using his personal story w father’s suicide, claims of “threats to family” to shield against criticism. He’s a good football coach but he’s a spineless douche.

Born & Bred scarlet bleeding Buckeye here. NEVER hated or even disliked Ryan Day personally. He was Urban's pick for the job and I respect Urban. I don't believe he would turn HIS Buckeyes over to a bad man. What I did have a problem with was what I saw as an inability to adapt. Josh, seriously, watch the UM game film from this year. For 4 Qtrs, we ran pretty much the same play on 1st down over & over & over, some kind of run between the tackles, and it was going NOWHERE! We were constantly in 3rd & long. It was like he and Kelly just had to prove that they could go toe to toe with UM. We had the talent advantage at the skill positions, we had the speed advantage, which is best utilized getting to the edges. But again, just continue to run it between the tackles with the same result, NOTHING! Starting with the TN game, they unleashed the stallions that they had kept somewhat hobbled all season, and look what happened! It's fine for you to defend Ryan Day on a personal level, but as someone whose football knowledge I respect, you CANNOT look at OSU game film from most all season and tell me that Day/Kelly utilized the talent on that team to it's fullest ability...until they did!

Ryan Day was likely offended by Lou Holtz’s comments because they directly questioned his team’s toughness and his ability to win big games. Holtz is a legendary coach who publicly implied that Ohio State lacked the physicality to compete at the highest level, essentially attacking the heart of Day’s program. For Day, it wasn’t just criticism it was a direct insult to his leadership, his players, and the work they’ve put in to maintain Ohio State as a national powerhouse.

I respect Day immensely. If the players love him, are loyal, and willing to fight for him he is clearly making a difference in these men’s lives. He loves them and they love him. Concerning the Michigan losses we all know that this rivalry is cyclical. To fire him for the UM losses while he’s one play away from wins plus a nearly 90% win rate any haters are either delusional with unrealistic expectations or simply resent his vast successes. To boil it down the haters should look in the mirror and measure themselves by the same expectations (impossible) or are unaware of their mental illness passing such hard judgment or accept the fact are far inferior to this man.

I’ve never disliked him. & his success has always impressed me as a tOSU fan. I think he’s had a Barry Switzer/Tom Osborne-type coaching tenure: a legend assuming a kingdom from a previous legend, & maintaining excellence. Took those 2 coaches decades to win the Natty. Day got it done in 6. Day’s excellence should never have been unfairly questioned

I was one of the ones calling for a coaching change…….IF Ohio St (who I love) lost to Tennessee after the TTun game. I said basically the only thing that could salvage this is a great playoff run. That is subjective. But what is objective fact is he did it in a fashion that was amazing. So that argument is dead. I don’t think it’s wrong that people felt that way.

Honestly it’s the Michigan games. I’d rather lose the biggest rivalry game in the nation every year than lose to Akron or Maryland. Because it at least adds substance. OSU is the only FBS program in history to never lose more then 8 games in a season. We also don’t have rebuild seasons, we reload. It’s hard losing to the guys up north but at least the B10 is probably the new big daddy of CFB

All of these, 'we don't hate Day, everybody just hate OSU' or 'they hate us more than any other program' comments. That wasn't the sentiment in early Decmeber when fans didn't turn out for the home CFP game. However, there is _no_ program hated more than BAMA, particularly this season. Most comments expressed SEC bias having a potential CFP12 spot for BAMA. Loatheing its history of success and the dynasty finally being over.. I think Day is a great coach! The team be built this year is truly impressive...

Unlikeable because: 1. In the Indiana game Trevyon Henderson slid down at the end of the game instead of scoring (classy move). Ryan lined up and scored an unnecessary touchdown anyway (classless). 2. After the Michigan game his response to the fight sounded as though he was condoning his players action saying they weren't going to let that happen. No accountability.

The only reason someone would perceive Day as unlikeable, is because they cannot get past the fact that he coaches at a school they do not like. Or they do not like him for defending his players against trolls who try to tell a narrative in the media?

His game plans and teams play not to lose because of expectations they set for themselves. The Michigan game this year was firable for the gameplan and response to the brawl. The players sat him down. It’s the only reason this happened. Happy for him and happy for the team but I’m not wavering from that because the most obviously talented team in the country did its job.

Michigan fans - If Frick or Frack was the head coach at Ohio State, he would win at least 75% of his games. Since 1950 (year of my birth) OSU has been the most consistent program in college football. Even John Cooper (hall of fame) had two teams that finished #2 in the AP. Read up on Michigan's history during that time. They have had numerous seasons where they have gone into hibernation.
