I'm going to put on more the teacher hat just for a second. We're gonna go go a little Bible nerdy. Is that okay? We're gonna dive into this and study it, then we'll jump back out into the charismatic world. Amen... that was a joke kidding! We're in it all together.
But this Hebrews Chapter 7, we have to understand that we are not part of the ironic or the levitic order of priests. And you may be like, what in the world are you talking about? What does that mean, the levitic order of priests?
The Levites were the ones who tended to the holy of holy's; they were the Priests. They were from a certain tribe. We're gonna look at some specifics. But there were very very very very specific things that had to be in place for you to be a Priest of that order.
We are the order of, as we're going to read about, Melchizedek. Say Melchizedek! The Priesthood in the order of Melchizedek, which by the way, David was also, and more importantly, Jesus, according to Psalm 1:10, is a priest in the order of Melchizedek.
And you might ask, "So what in the world does that even matter?" Let's get into it and let's look. Let's read this. Hebrews chapter 7, verse 1, it says:
"Melchizedek was King of Salem, the priest of God most high. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the Kings and blessed him, and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means King of righteousness; then also King of Salem, which means King of peace. Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever."
So here's this mysterious guy named Melchizedek, that's only mentioned three times in Scripture. I think it's Genesis 14 or 15-I think it's fourteen Genesis-and then again in Psalm 1:10, and then here in Hebrews.
This mysterious guy with no genealogy-what does that mean? It doesn't mean he was supernatural; it just means that his genealogy wasn't recorded anywhere in the Bible. That's why the writer of Hebrews said that.
But it's this strange man that even back hundreds of years before Moses, before Aaron, before the Levites, he was called a Priest. And Abraham met him on the road essentially coming back and gave him a tithe.
It's a very strange, mysterious story. And you can start to research this, and scholars argue and don't understand all the interpretations, and there's a lot of things. But here's what we do know clearly by Scripture: that we are priests in the order of Melchizedek.
Turn to someone next to you and say, "You're a priest in the order of Melchizedek." And turn to someone on the other side and say, "I just found out I'm a priest in the order of Melchizedek."
Let's just go in a little bit and see what this means. I want to just compare the ironic priesthood, the priesthood of the Levites, and we'll do this quickly.
Here are five things about them:
To be a Levite, a levitic priest, you had to be a descendant of the tribe of Levi and Aaron (Moses's brother). So, you had to actually be in the family line, or you're done-don't even apply for the position, right?
The Levites were not a ruling class. This is very important. They were not Kingly and royalty; they were subject to the King. So, they had priestly duties, but they didn't operate with Kingly authority in the nation of Israel.
Their sacrifices were not permanent and had to be repeated. That's very important. Every year, according to the calendar, according to the very strict traditions and the law-and specifically on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), on the highest holy day-the high priest had to offer that sacrifice on behalf of the sins of the entire nation. And he didn't just have to do it once; he had to do it every year over and over and over.
It was hereditary. You had to be not just of the tribe of Levi, but within the tribe, you had to be born into the right family.
The time of the priestly service of the Levites was limited. When you hit the age of 50, you were no longer a Priest. All right, so there was a limit even on the amount of time you could be a priest within that line.
Okay, that's the ironic-not the ironic-the Aaronic priesthood of the Levites.
Now let's look at the order of Melchizedek, this mysterious thing that Paul-or the writer of Hebrews, who I believe was Paul personally-I just said it, there you go-dedicates nearly an entire chapter to in Hebrews Chapter 7.
