I always knew that the tonal center was the key to it but never thought to visualize it the way you described it. Noice!

An easy way is to find the parent key. Example - D Lydian parent key would be A major (Lydian is 4th position). If you have a D harmony/chord profession etc. playing underneath then you can simply play the A major scale starting at the 5th fret on the 1st position and connect all the shapes. Easy!
