I didn't think he was overrated because I hadn't really watched anything from him until I happened to catch Blue Valentine on tv and I was impressed by his acting there. I did almost the same thing and watched 90% of his movies this year. Yes, he is very versatile. What I think might be underappreciated about him is his talent/timing for comedy.

I remember seeing him on Friday Night Lights when he was still an extra and IIRC had NO lines in the movie, unless you count like a scene where the team is getting pumped up and chanting. It took him getting famous after the fact and me watching that movie again later years down the line to be like "HOLY SHIT, is that Ryan Gosling?" it's almost similar to the way I felt when I was re-watching the Chappelle's Show and noticing a now world famous Bill Burr in some of the skits like "How did I not know this was Bill Burr before?" Well, he wasn't famous yet, that's why most likely.
