This is an example of how parents can instill values in their children with "punishments" that actually benefit them rather than simply restrict them.

Need ALOT more of that! Just simply taking the time, looking from the outside in. Think about majority of parent’s in this crazy, fast paced world. wrapped up with work, making ends meet, etc…! IMO really understanding your child/children, their personalities on what makes them truly tick, and motivate them with the simple idea of healthy trade offs like his mother did, at an early age especially. Not saying all parent’s don’t try, but overlook/don’t look and in doing so, can make it harder on themselves to raise their children properly, when all it takes is obviously attention, but again understanding what makes them tick(personality); which usually manifests at ages 3-6yrs old. I’m getting carried away, lol. Just imagine the more positive’s/possibilities of today’s society!? “Healthy beneficial punishment’s” for both parent/child, is what you pretty much called it👍! Point is, whether it’s family and or friend’s, right off the top of your head, I bet you could think of a good handful of them, that aren’t for say, looking from the outside in and struggling with their children, for all sorts of reason’s that so simply could be resolved, but just keep repeating their maybe ignorant way’s, consistently running in circles, the children suffer from it and in long run so does our society! SSL! Stay safe/have a great life!✌️

@@chadbalogh6296 I appreciate your feedback. This knowledge I learned after observing my son not learning anything from more traditional punishments (deprivation via no playdates that week, or no tv, etc.) and then noticing him feeling bad about himself and trusting me less. So I decided to try and catch him doing even the smallest of things right or giving it a good effort. It actually seemed hard at first to retrain my eyes to look for and see the good behaviors bc as parents we simply expect good behaviors and so they're often overlooked, similar to the good child in the family. So I put more expression in my thank yous and praised even the littlest things he did right and it wasn't long before I saw the pride show back up in him. I then learned how to give natural consequences as his "punishments" that were related to any adversarial or disrespectful behavior. I had him go walk over calmly to pick up the toy he may have thrown in anger and have him show me the right way to treat the toy (rather than say take it away from him). No "extra" lesson involved. If he stole candy from a store, I'd go with him back to the store to tell the mgr what he did, return the item and apologize. No extra punishment. When he got big enough to hit to hurt off we went to a kid's karate class to learn self-discipline around using his strength. He had was already in 4 sports a year by choice and physical outlets were what agreed with him. So, yes, tuning into our kids is so important. If he was more of a reader we would have gone that route, but as it was I needed to augment his schedule with tutoring. School was for him something he wld have to endure until he got to pursue his own creative outlets (which he's now happily doing at 25). I know parents have a lot on their plates, but once they get the idea of praising even little things they're going to have to do way less disciplining and they'll have more enjoyable time with their kids. I'm SO glad I woke up and made the changes I made. I even got his school to try and stop giving kids simple detentions that taught nothing while they were being held over. That kid disrupting the class by talking during study time perhaps should be given an extra assignment to present to the whole class about what's a special hobby of theirs or a thing they do well or about their pet - anything to give them a platform where they are "heard." Maybe their talking out of turn means they have things to say, for example, and maybe one day become a news reporter! I got the principal to consider at least degrees of "offenses" by asking why should a teen who physically hurts another student get the same detention as a kid who is late to school 3 times (that might be their parents' fault)? Then we tried a pilot program where kids wld be awarded at assembly a certificate for having been nominated by a parent or teacher for doing an act of kindness for another. Sadly, only one child ever received the certificate (a child I nominated) bc the teachers could not change their habit of ONLY catching students doing things "wrong." The board reserved for nomination letters would have stayed blank if not for my posted letters. Then we wonder why kids feel undervalued or have a need to bully others. Anyway, your comment touched an old nerve I have about this topic. So thank you for your part in trying to elevate parents' awareness. :)

Right. And discipline means to teach. It doesn't mean to punish or beat or harm

I wonder if he actually read any of the books. I remember distinctly about 20 years ago hearing an interview with Steven Spielberg and he said that it was a big mistake for people who wanted to do film not to be well read. I’m sure there are exceptions, but he claimed that your ability to imagine is actually greater if you are not depending on a visual stimulus. Speaking of wondering, I wonder if there’s any actual scholarly research to show that.

@@johnnie99Audiobooks count. If you have a hard time making yourself read a physical book, listen to one. You get all of the same benefits.
@gazzyb85

@@redbullwife1 That's not quite right. Reading and listening use different cognitive processes. When you read, your brain actively decodes and comprehends each word, which sharpens your comprehension and directly improves your writing skills. Audiobooks are useful if reading text is challenging, but they don't engage your brain in the same way. For maximum cognitive benefits, you need to engage directly with the text.
