What a wonderful treat to see The Great Helen Gallagher and Malcom’s Groom! Started watching when I was in my teens and then rewatched on utube recently. The writing and the acting were impeccable and way ahead of their time! The show was truly a gift and still is. I’m sure people are enjoying it again now. Oh wow! Ms. Gallagher still sounds the same 😊 I have so many memories of watching the earlier years of Ryan’s Hope with my great-grandmother, who watched me. And then once I began school, I’d watch during summer and winter break. Always one of my favorite shows. And I had a cat named Trouble back in the 80s. She was a gray and black tabby with a little white. She was so sweet. 🤗❤️💫✨

I'm sorry I missed this live interview. Helen is a few months older than my mom would have been if she was still alive. That's awesome she is doing so well still. I was a big Ryan's Hope fan during the 1970's.

I was born in late 78 so I did not see any of the show, however I am a fan of Kate Mulgrew from Netflix OITNB and I read her book Born With Teeth and she wrote about being on Ryan's Hope so I thought I would check out the show and I found it on KZbin and I love this show so much. Then I came across your interview with one of the best part of the show Helen Gallagher, OMG it was so great to see this and hear her talk about the show. I love that she kept saying the show was about family because its clear to see that these Actors loved each other, the way they spoke was so natural and beautiful. I am early in the show so you broke my heart when you said Mary died, but its been over 40 years, you should not have to say Spoiler Alert, lol. Thanks for this interview Alan, I truly enjoyed it.

Thank you so much for this interview. Helen Gallagher brought such a naturalness to the role of Maeve. It was as though she we were playing herself. Which is a sign of good acting. I was very disappointed with the direction the show took once ABC took over. My favorites, aside from Helen Gallagher were Malcolm Groome's Pat, Ilene Kristen's Delia, Kate Mulgrew's Mary, Jack, Seneca Sarah Felder's Siobhan and Papa Ryan. He was a professor at Brooklyn College during the time I studied there. I passed by Bernard Barrow a few times while I was there (was too star struck to say hello).

Alan: It was such a treat to see those two! I watched Ryan's Hope through its entire run - it was my favorite (after All My Children). Helen Gallagher, as Maeve, was amazing and flawless. Helen's face has changed from 30+ years ago!! And what to say about Malcolm Groome, the good Dr. Patrick Ryan (I had such a crush on him when I was a teenager). There are moments when I felt sad watching this interview. I could see how you might have had some practical challenges. It was nevertheless amazing!! Thank you Alan.

I grew up in Northern Ohio, about 30-40 miles East of Toledo, the news was 1 hour long, when they announced that the news would be 1/2 hour long and they were adding Ryan's Hope, this gal was so happy, i was not happy when they took it off.

Great interview, Alan! I loved Ryan's Hope growing up, and it was great to see these two marvelous actors again. Just a correction on Mr. Groome's statement about the timeslot change - Ryan's Hope originally aired at 12:30 pm ET, and then Loving premiered at 12 noon in 1983. The swap that occurred in 1986 displaced RH to mornings in markets where the ABC affiliate aired a noon news, while other affiliates dropped it all together. This impacted its ratings dramatically, and ultimately led to the show's cancellation in 1989.

Sometimes I wonder if she could have been the inspiration for The Books that Nora Roberts wrote about The Irish Families whether it`s the Gallachers, Donovans, amongst others. It also had a Coronation Street Vibe since alot of the action took place in a Bar.
