In today’s video, we learn of a person who was born with hemophilia in 1971 and contracted age in 1984. During those days there was little known about the aids virus. They originally had given Ryan White 3 to 6 months to live, but he ended up beating the odds and to the age of 18.
He was born in Kokomo, Indiana and he was diagnosed with aids during the seventh grade. Ryan started to feel better instead of passing away in 3 to 6 months. so much so that he wanted to return to school but the stigma and bad information surrounding the aids virus, the school did not want to let him return and Ryan’s mom would have to be in court fighting for his return for a year and a half. Kids would call him names and say that he was gay because he contracted aids and also they were afraid to be around him or even give him a hug because they thought that he would infect them. They would also said that he must’ve done something against God or he would not have gotten aids.
Ryan’s mom decided to move to Cicero, Indiana for a new start. This President of the student body was very educated with the new disease aids and knew that he presented no danger to the students by attending school. Eventually, at the age of 16 he was able to get a job and be proud of it and to also go to school dances and proms. But unfortunately, he would pass away two months before graduating high school.
Ryan open the doors for people who had contracted aids and tried to eliminate the bad stigma and ignorance that came along with it when people treat people badly for having the disease. They even passed laws and legislation with Ryan’s name so that a foundation would be laid out so that future kids will not have to suffer or endure or go through bad treatment like Ryan had done. Ryan will always be remembered as a pioneer and as a very positive person who is brave and never gave up hope or faith through his journey here on earth with all of the lives, he touched and the people he educated about a new disease. And he would also set a standard of how human beings should treat other human beings.
If you or you know a person who has aids and needs help medically or even emotionally then reach out to the Ryan White foundation that was created in his memory to provide treatment for this disease to people who can’t afford treatment:
