This was great! Thanks for bringing us along and congrats on the performance. Nothing like going out hard and having to just hold on tight. I've been trying to figure out how I might be able to film my 'faster' races (anything less than a 100 miler), and I think the retrospective like you did is the way to go.
@RyanClaytonFilms3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeff!! Yeah this one was tough to get "in the moment" content since I was running hard, but also because the terrain was just so sketchy that I had to focus entirely on where I was putting my feet on each step. I like your narrative style that you have on some of yours and think this would be seamless for you to do!

This video popped up on my feed today...I was there with you at OPSF, and we apparently ran quite close together during the race. Pretty amazing that you carried a GoPro the entire way. Nice to watch your take on the race. No doubt the muddiest race of my 100+ ultras. Thanks for posting your experience.
@lkopelov3 жыл бұрын
Great race, Ryan! It was actually quite an amusing race, looking at it objectively. Although my training and taper went well leading up the race, I had a tight place in my left groin from the get go. I was hoping it would loosen up, but it caused me to develop an intense localized pain above my left outer knee (possibly IT band) which set a slower pace from mile 11 onward. It really sucked, but I never thought about quitting the race; my pace was not tiring as long as I could put up with the pain. The funny part was leapfrogging and passing about 6 other people that were suffering from calf spasms, sore achilles, IT band, dehydration, you name it! I think some had to call it a day, but most gutted it out. Some had to slow up on hills, some had to stop and stretch, so we just kept passing each other. Good to see you out there. Thanks for the video.

In mud and in freezing weather, I never double knot the laces. I tuck the loops under the zig-zagging laces. Then it doesnt lock into a hard lump, that needs to be cut.

Hey bud cool video. Doing a little research because I'm running the 50 miler here in a couple weeks. Did you bother changing your socks at all? I've been purposely running super muddy trails lately hoping to get a feel for it.
@RyanClaytonFilms2 жыл бұрын
Awesome Keith! I did not change shoes or socks during the 50k, really no chance to and they are just going to get covered again as soon as you get back out on the trail. This race is more of a test of willpower and just grinding it out early in the season. If you are really struggling with some blisters or some other problem, maybe switching can help with the mental side, but otherwise just get a comfortable pair of socks and shoes and push through till the end!!

I can only imagine how heavy your legs must have felt climbing through all that mud. Great Job! Curious, did you stick to the same nutrition plan as you use for your longer ultras? Did you pushing the pace change your approach to gels/water intake?
@RyanClaytonFilms3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex! Yeah I used my long run plan, about a gel every 40 min. I use spring so they are about 100 calories and it worked really well. Should have had more water but I was emptying my bottles in between each aid station so probably should have tried to chug a bottle while at the aid stations but wanted to keep moving. Great learning experience!
