I realise there's a miscommunication with the line that Jonathan "overcome that just before a sacrab beetle kills him" - I meant it in the context of him overcoming greed before it was too late, not that he dies immediately after... you'd think me talking about the sequel with him in it would make sense. I'm currently working towards a goal of releasing 2 extra videos per month (eventually 4), so if you want to see more videos without a sacrifice in quality, please consider heading over to Patreon and helping me out: www.patreon.com/ryanhollinger

Keep up the great work ryan. Consider breaking down ghostland and the symbolic tribute Pascal laugier gives to aspiring storytellers in that film, and how it serves as an allegory for his climb from suicidal ideation during his making of martyrs

I actually liked Maria Bello in the part and she did the best job she could with what she was given so I was really pleased with her. it was just sort of a mistake for them to ask her to play the same character as Rachel. So she is in no way to blame but she should have been asked to play a different character while Evie should have been just killed off.

Imhotep recognizes the prayer that Beni prays in Hebrew; Imhotep acknowledges that it is the language of the slaves which makes Beni instantly useful; establishing their interpersonal dynamic from there. It does NOT mean Imhotep was a Jew, practicing or otherwise.
@illerac84
@illerac84 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I was going to post the same. Imhotep is a high priest of the ancient Egyptian religion. He's well educated and certainly high class if not a noble. He certainly wasn't a Hebrew, just recognized the language of the slaves that Egypt held. I always liked that line, but I think it goes over a lot of people's heads.
@alexandresobreiramartins9461

Yeah, considering it's a fairy tale like the Bible, pretty accurate. Also, IT SAYS SO in the movie. Imhotep says, "The language of the slaves. You may be of some use". He's NOT saying "my language", he's just acknowledging Beni as a Jew (even though he's actually not) and a slave (even though Egyptians never enslaved Jews (or anyone else, for that matter) and the whole story is a myth, but that's fine because this movie is fiction anyway.

I just want to say that yes Jewish people do speak Hebrew, if there were Jewish slaves in ancient Egypt they wouldn't have spoken Hebrew they would have spoken Egyptian. It wouldn't make sense to have your workforce speak a different language, and as for them speaking it in a religious sense: Egyptian worship was tired to their government so they would have forced slaves to practice worship of Egyptian gods. So why would Imhotep know Hebrew?

i absolutely adore Evelyn and RIck's relationship! It's one of the few relationships in an action movie/series that felt so natural and real and the fact that in the sequels they stay in love and devoted to each other is just amazing to me! I love that they love each other, basically. That kind of romance in movies is... rare, to say the least. They managed to make a fun and compelling series of movies that didn't derive petty drama from the relationship of its main couple and instead had the drama be from the actual stuff going on. I love The Mummy and The Mummy Returns very much and I'm happy you seem to as well!

I watched it for the first time in 20 years a couple of months ago, expecting the same. The only thing that's really aged is some of the effects and even that enhances the film because it plays up the "B movie with a budget" effect it's going for. I do love how much Fraser plays his role like Indiana Jones in that he's frequently in over his head and, to borrow a quote from Indy, is "making this up as he goes along." He's not an unstoppable action hero, he's just a guy doing his best to get through this and more than once getting out of trouble through sheer dumb luck.

Ok firstly, great vid as always. Second: Imhotep is probably one of my favorite movie villians just because of how tragic his backstory is. He falls in love with a girl, gets like TRIPLE MURDERED because of it, and after all the crap he went through, she abandons him to fall into the underworld instead of risking her life for him. Say what you will about the second film, but that look of devastating betrayal on Imhotep's face right before he lets himself fall into the underworld is one of the more heartbreaking moments of cinema to me. I mean yeah he's a bad dude still, but this whole thing still started because he loved her, and in the end he got nothing but pain in return. (Also fuck those scarabs and those monkey things they scared THE FRICK OUTTA ME AS A KID)

That definitely makes The Mummy Returns worth a watch in & of itself. That scene makes it clear she only used Imhotep to get out from under the Pharaoh's control and so she could get the Scorpion King's bracelet for herself. If they had been successful in gaining control over Anubis' army, I could have seen her turning on him either in that moment or at a later date, so she could take control of the armies and thus the world.

@@tessdurberville711 If the Dark Universe's The Mummy had been better and was also better received, if not Rick, we could have seen Imhotep work with one of the DU's Mummy characters instead for a sequel thanks to the Book of Amun-Ra popping up as an easter egg in the film. A sequel could have revealed the Fraser Mummy movies take place in the DU's past if they ever felt inclined. Sadly, the movie was an all around failure.

I don't see him as bad, just a product of his time. The actions he takes are what would be expected of an Egyptian nobleman who could not care less for the pedestrians all around him, but he's not doing anything out of actual evil (unlike Beni, who is selfish to the point of being demonic).

Saw _The Mummy_ in theaters when I was eleven, and it's been one of my favorite films ever since. Easily one of the most entertaining and re-watchable movies of the past thirty years. No joke, I've probably seen it a hundred times since I first saw it on the big-screen. It's still one of my go-to's whenever I wanna watch something fun and relax after a long work-week. Recently picked it up on 4K since I'm planning to finally upgrade to a 4K TV soon, and I can't wait to check it out in that format. (Still have my original VHS copy, plus Ultimate Edition DVD and Blu-Ray copies, too.) It was one of those magical films where everything went just right. The right director at the helm. The right actor/actress in every part. The right composer. The right set designer. Etc. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if it was considered a classic thirty years from now, much in the same way that the original 1932 _Mummy_ is viewed as one now.

This is the exact reason why the recent Mummy movie failed, they made Brendan Fraser a flawed and relatable person against a sympathic protagonist in the Mummy. The short impromptu comedy bits with O'connell are just so perfectly placed and acted that it keeps the movie from taking itself too seriously. The whole "Goodbye, Benny" "Wait here I'll go get help" and the scene with O'connell letting out a battlecry to show his fearlessness and the mummies letting out their own more fearsome battlecry in response just fits so good in the context of the scene and O'connell's personality. Benny's scenes are also memorable, "He just got promoted" and when he was praying in hebrew and other languages while shaking in fear in front of Imhotep.

1. Our main heroes didn’t go to Hamunaptra searching to “unlock ancient powers,” they went because Evie was fascinated by ancient Egypt and researching/discovering its artifacts. They didn’t actually know of any powers or curse, aside from Rick having experiencing the creepy sand incident at the very beginning of the movie. 2. Imhotep didn’t spare Benny because he ascribed to his belief system, the reason he took Benny with him was because he spoke “the language of the slaves” a language he was familiar with, which would allow him to serve as a translator Great video! This movie was definitely a favorite of mine growing up and still holds a place that is near and dear to my heart so I was very excited to see this in my notifications. I feel that the showing of the star of David making the Mummy think of him as a slave is a strangely amazing joke, and the fact that this alone spares his life and makes him the Mummy's servant just amplifies that
@Fickji

It wasn't the Star of David that the Mummy notices. It was the prayer Benny says. Imhotep states "the language of the slaves". And then proceeds to talk to Benny in the Jewish language. The funny part is that, regarding the third movie, I was willing to let a lot of things slide (dropping Ardeth Bay from the cast, calling terra-cotta soldiers “mummies”, changing Evy’s actress, etc.) for the sake of suspension of disbelief. The one thing I could NOT excuse was how the characters from previous movies (with the exceptions of those characters who didn’t make an appearance at all, and possibly Jonathan as well) were treated in the third movie compared to past movies. Rick’s intro in the third movie makes him look like a bumbling idiot who can’t do something as simple as fishing without resorting to bullets. Evy went from a quirky little cinnamon roll in the first movie, to a confidently badass princess in the second movie, to a washed-up has-been dreaming about her glory days in the third movie. And don’t even get me started on Alex. In the second movie, Alex was a smart kid with a bright future who genuinely loved his parents (even if he was somewhat of a brat at first), and the ending of the second movie highlighted how much closer the O’Connells had become. Some of the non-canon bits of Mummy lore (the animated series, the book series, etc.) expanded on his character even further by making him an aspiring Medjai, which set up a nice mentor dynamic between him and Ardeth Bay. And then along came the third movie, which singlehandedly flushed all that character development down the proverbial toilet and not only had Alex drop out of school, but also put him on bad terms with his parents at the start for no adequately explained reason. And last but not least, while in retrospect I can be glad that Ardeth Bay wasn’t in the third movie (if only because he avoided any direct character assassination as a result), I will say that the characters who essentially replaced him in the third movie (Lin and later Zi Yuan) couldn’t quite match up for a number of reasons, and the overall group dynamic suffered as a result. Most notably, what made Ardeth fit so well in the Mummy series was that, while he was the most dark/mysterious hero in the series and the most dead serious most of the time, he could still have a sense of humor and even a goofy moment or two (“this was... my first bus ride”) without being out of character. This allowed him to balance out the other characters without being a buzzkill, and is a primary reason why his buddy banter with the much more comedic Jonathan in the second movie worked so well. Neither Lin nor Zi Yuan had that same dynamic with the O’Connells. Not only did Zi Yuan not even meet the O’Connells until about 3/4 into the movie, but her interactions with them were little more than the standard wise-person-aiding-the-heroes-on-their-quest routine. Lin was Alex’s designated love interest, but not only was her chemistry with the other O’Connells minimal at best, but even her romance with Alex seemed forced at times, mainly because her rigid seriousness didn’t mesh particularly well with Alex’s more swashbuckler personality. So yeah, those are my two cents.

Regular Ol' Fish yeah I’m now realising this movie probably started my historical/theological/mythological obsessions also! Yeah it made me sad too, not so much as a child, but about a month ago when I rewatched the films I cried so hard and couldn’t stop, my mother was weirded out, I had to explain how everything he did was for her, he killed other people for her, she meant so much to him.. how Rick wanted Evelyn to save herself but she wouldn’t abandon him, how Imhotep looks to his love expecting that same pure love, but it’s revealed she’s had a dark and selfish soul this whole time. How Imhoteps soul never rested for hundreds and hundreds of years, and his love for her could be so pure despite being an evil man even after all that time, but she loved herself more than she loved him. It changes the context of her suicide in the first film. You think it’s so she can be reunited with Imhotep afterwards, loving him enough to trust he’d bring her back so their love could be fulfilled, but really, she did it to escape a life she always hated, she did it for herself, not for her love of Imhotep or to be with him, but to be away from the world and position she was born in to.

I remember being so obsessed with the first two films. There’s something this film has that not even my most favourite films have.

I miss Brendan Fraser getting work. I hope after Doom Patrol we see him in more things.
