SPD Type 2 should be mandatory; SPD Type 1 should be permissive. The objective is to protect catadromous (“downstream” in a water flow analogy) of the main Overcurrent Protection Device; SPD Type 1 goes BEYOND essential requirements.

Things(unless things change) that will burn out and either catch on fire or(after a while) lose their effectiveness. I'm just a grumpy old man though, What do I know? So does this NFPA requirement release device manufacturers from their due diligence? I.e. protecting their own devices. Could be a real slippery slope here. I think that needs to be better defined...either through code or listing specification.

If they're trying to protect smoke alarms, and medical sensitive equipment, why off cabins in the middle of the woods, with a generator don't need this kind of protection?
