It was out there for sure. When you go, I'd love to see it in late June early July when everything is green instead of the autumn colors. I had snow spikes that I left back in Osh, would have been nice for that last day.

The visa policy of the Kyrgyz Republic sucks! Be aware that they aren’t granting visas but asking for money!!!you will be very frustrated waiting many days for a visa and they don’t care about anything.

You better go out there then, and live in your country. I stayed in many places around the world, taking photos of the wild, and when I showed them to the locals, they were surprised. It is easy to get blind to the scenary you are born in to.

@@RyanJSchmitz Hey Ryan, go to Tajikistan, the Fann mountains are next level. Recommend doing the trek beg. of July to avoid crowds. In Kyrgyzstan, I've been to the mountains south from the town of Karakol, also great. The Alakol lake is a sight to die for.

@@RyanJSchmitz Already planning. VisitAlay is a great site. Looking at Best of Tian Shen Mountains 7 day. I have a friend that can go with. Flights look to be around $1300. Kyrgyzstan/Tajikistan are visa-free from what I understand. It looks like you did the Best of Alay 8 day trek. Did you join another group or was it just the two of you? Did you bring your own tent, or just bag and mat? Did you bring any normal backpacking gear (eg. Water filter, jetboil, your own snacks, etc) Would you say a large duffel and 65L pack included everything you needed, or could you have survived with just the backpack?

We brought just sleeping quilt and pad. We organized homestays and yurts with VisitAlay. We did not get a guide but we did have a porter. We move at our own pace but there was another group on the same route with visit alay and we would see them in the morning and the evening at the homestays and yurts. We did use our own water filters. The homestays/yurts provided “clean” water but everyone in the other groups who used that water had stomach problems. Food was provided at the homestays/yurts and I brought some general snacks for on the trails. I think I had a 65L duffel for this trip and it was certainly more than I needed, but we weren’t carrying it so…if I did it again, I would feel 100% confident packing my 50L bag for the entire trip including tent, cooking supplies, food, etc and probably pick up a few meals at the yurts/homestays.
