Thanks for the tutorial. I model cakes (mainly wedding & birthday) for a number of bakeries who specialize in high end customized cakes. I've always had trouble with texturing painting "meringue swirls" when the chef lightly burns the edges & it gives that mottled effect between the white of the meringue & the tan, brown & black. Thanks to this tutorial I now have a really good starting point to achieve the effect i'm going for. Happy Easter, stay safe & keep on smiling.

Thank you for this tutorial... fun, helpful, cool end result. I followed the tute to a "T" as best I can tell, but I have a small issue when doing the painting. If I paint onto the unwrapped map, everything paints correctly... it shows up where you would expect it to on the 3d model in the adjacent window. However, if I paint on the 3d model itself, it actually paints onto the opposite side of the model. So if I look at the top of the mushroom and draw a line... you don't actually SEE a line. But if I rotate it over, the line is on the underside. But if I draw that same line on the top of the mushroom on the unwrapped UV, it shows up correctly on the top of the mushroom. I finished the tutorial just fine and I have a killer looking mushroom, I just had to do all my painting onto the UV instead of the 3D. Ideas?
@RyanKingArt2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, do you have a mirror modifier on the object? Maybe apply that and try it again. also make sure you don't have overlapping UV's.
@brandoncollins48122 жыл бұрын
@@RyanKingArt Thanks for the Reply, Ryan. No, no modifiers at all... straight mesh, followed along almost exactly. Did seams, my UV map is nice and flat. Thy only thing I did differently, was I did an extra seam so that I had 3 pieces to my UV map.. 1. the top of the mushroom, 2. the underside of the mushroom, and 3. the stem. Where your model had the stem and underside as once piece.

Hello Ryan, First of all, thanks for the tutorial, it's very well explained step-by-step. If have a question: After you save your texture/paint images, will Blender recognize the UV position if I import the same model into another project? And if I wanted to create the same model as an assset for Unreal Engien (for example), do I just need to export as an .fbx file so the UV unwrapping information stays in the model? Sorry if you find the question confusing, and Thanks in advance for the answer! Keep up the awesome work.
@RyanKingArt2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the UV mapping should transfer between software. I don't know for sure, because I don't use any other 3d software other then Blender, but I'm very sure the UV mapping data will transfer with the model.

Love this tutorial! This is very helpful. I already figured out texturing but I wasn't sure with the bump map and the material part, but those parts in your video helped me a lot when you explained them. I do have a question. Nothing wrong with Blender's basic texture painting, but I prefer using programs like Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint where I have a huge range of brushes and I like to use them for texture painting the PNG. Is there's a way I can link the UV image to a drawing program so when I paint on the texture in the art program, the texture gets updated in Blender? I dislike using the brush in Blender where it would come out pixelated despite me putting a higher resolution UV image.
@RyanKingArt2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. As far as I know, there is no way to do a real time update like that, from one program to another.

Great video. But what I want to do is just make a few basic default brushes for Texture Paint other than the default TexDraw brush. When you click on the draw tool it opens a big empty menu with just the one brush. It even has a search field so there has got to be a way to add user-defined default brushes without having to do the texture/stencil thing or appending a set of brushes every time you open a new file. Basically I just want to add a few basic brushes (like adding a brush in PS) that is always there without having to manually append from another file. I've looked all over and can find nothing. Any ideas?
@RyanKingArt3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can do that. Click on the little button, that looks like two pieces of paper, under the Brushes Tab. That will duplicate the brush. Then you can change any settings that you want. You can add custom brush images, change the colors, Ect. You can also change the name of the brush. As Far as the brushes being in all your default Blender startups, you can make Blender and the brushes how you want. Then click on File, Defaults, Save Startup file. That way, it will startup Blender with the settings you have set.
@seanposkea3 жыл бұрын
@@RyanKingArt Thanks a lot for the quick response. I knew all the stuff at the top of your reply I just hadn't thought about the start up file to save to the brushes. I have a very elaborate start up file with custom workspaces, and all sorts things but I just didn't connect saving brushes with the start up. BTW that file has to live somewhere on the computer, doesn't it? I looked all over for it. It would be nice if you could just drag and drop stuff to a startup file folder like the way you used to add brushed to PS.
@seanposkea3 жыл бұрын
@@RyanKingArt Oh and BTW, I asked the same question of five or six big YT Blender folks and you were the only one who thought about the Start file. Everyone else said, "Nope, you just have to append every time," so kudos.
@RyanKingArt3 жыл бұрын
@@seanposkea Oh ok. Glad I could help! Yes, Blender stores the Data for the default startup somewhere on the computer. I'm not sure exactly where. I think its somewhere in the home folder. But I think it depends on the operating system.

the pixels you were seeing were because your map for the normal generation was 8bit when it could have been 16 bit and then you would have had smooth gradients converted into the normal map. so when making normal maps from grey scale maps use 16bit depth to fix that stepping your seeing. the stepping in the look was because you only had 256 greys to use to make the normal map when you really want thousands of greys. after you can convert the normal map once made into 8bit again if you want to thats ok. but author the grey in 16bit.

Nice tutorial! A tip would be to talk about 1-4k in a separate video and let people watch that instead! :) No harm no foul! And math in the fields of unity could be another topic... Texture painting is nothing a pure beginner walks in to, they should know the "basics" if they end up here. Only a tip!

when i unwrapped my mushroom, the side and the top are linked together. Although I can link select them seperately, they move, scale, and rotate together. What am I doing wrong?

Great tutorial, finally figured out how to paint things. One question, how do you paint sculptures with very detailed mesh, the seam doesnt seem to work for me
