Deer can have a phenomenally quick reaction to an incoming arrow. Either by catching sight of the arrow itself, hearing the release, or both and they’ll almost always drop and/or spin away. Sometimes until their belly is touching the ground. The farther the shot is, the more time they have to react. I overshot or hit too high on several bucks before learning how to read the situation and adjust my shot placement to compensate.

In my opinion, your "where to aim" soots are more of "where to hit" spots. If you are bow hunting, you need to aim lower for the deer ducking. Id also like to hit them a tiny bit more foreword too, but thats still a great spot to hit.

Depends where you hunt. I’ve killed 50 or more deer in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and I’ve never noticed any deer getting out of the way before the arrow is through them. Maybe they do that in high pressure states?

Deer don’t “duck”, they respond to the arrow release sound by dropping at the front legs to preload the muscles so they can jump and run. It’s instinctive, It’s just like you flinching when a loud noise startles you. You jump!

I like this video, it’s real important that people look at deer with what I’d call X-ray vision, the second I see a deer I’m picture heart placement, I studied deer anatomy well before I started hunting so that I’d always get a clean heart/lung shot, and it’s single-handedly the best thing I ever did.

The diagrams are excellent and do a great job showing how there are many more major vessels in the forward part of the vital V. Shoot a heavy arrow that can break bone or a controlled expansion or monolithic bullet and you can shift your aim where the density of large major vessels is highest and you don't have to be nearly as worried about peksy bones being in the way of your projectile. Quartering towards? Try to thread in front of the shoulder for a double lung, but don't be afraid of having to bust through the scapula. Directly overhead? Aim straigth for the spine. You break that spinal cord, that deer's not going anywhere and you can take an easy followup onn a paralyzed deer for a faster dispatch. Head on? Aim at the body/neck junction. Large taget with all the major vessels going to the neck and head. Your left/right needs to be solid, but elevation is pretty forgiving, you hit the spine with any high shot and get into the lungs on anything low.

Awesome stuff! I think we just sort of forget about some of this stuff. I smoked mine this year close and drilled his shoulder. Dumped him, but it wasn't a kill shot. Super helpful to know what I need to avoid and I think most of us newer hunters just assume aiming just behind the shoulder. It's nice to see what's there.

Lots of good info for someone just starting and also for experienced hunters. I am confident in my abilities to make all shots one the biggest one I avoid is the straight away shot. If I’m using a rifle I have no problems taking a neck shot. Bow is a different story

Last few years we have been running the 165 grain sst from hornady as hand loads and we nicknamed the load the grim reaper because it only takes one shot and they fold right up. Shot a doe last year on a deer drive and at 200 yards I folded her on a dead run

@@DatKat I used to run 150 grain coreloks for the longest time but threw them out after I shot a doe twice in the vitals and she never died. My buddy ended up shooting that doe during late season with a flintlock and when they processed her they saw the bullets never opened up. Follow year did 165 grain sst bullet heads, 43.5 grains of imr4320 and the grim reaper was born. Doe a doe with it that year and blew out a hole the size of my fist

Often, when taking a bow shot, the deer will drop several inches before the arrow finds it's mark. Therefore; in such cases, aiming a few inches low (particularly for a heart shot) can put your impact closer to where you want it.

This is true, however keep your distance on mind. Under 20 yards the deer will hardly have time to react so you don't need to adjust much here. Getting to 30 yards and more is where this can come into play.

IMO the quartering away shot is superior to the broadside shot as I believe the margin for error is greater. Although the broadside shot appears to have the larger target area you are more likely to hit a shoulder or gut. Whereas the quarter away even if you hit too far back it will go up and into the chest cavity.

Lol but the thing you left out from the strait down shot is the blood trail is crazy from experience single lung is fine you are most likely going to hit some major artery or vein and if you give it time it should be an easy blood trail to follow it’s a lot harder to clot with gravity working against the deer. But I’ve also had an arrow deflect off bone with that shot.

One thing on the directly down shot. If you get your arrow far enough forward, and you're using even just a 100 gr **FIXED** blade, that shot can be really catastrophic. You'll usually get one lung completely destroyed, plus at least the the small stuff that connects the heart and lungs. The blood trail off these suck, but the deer drop pretty quick. The reason this shot works is because the arrow has gravity helping, and on a truly straight down, that arrow is basically acting like the blades in a food processor when the buck runs. DEFINITELY NOT a shot to take with a mech.

I agree but I take this shot all the time with a schwacker 1.75" and aim just off the back bone and it goes through and sticks in the ground with no issues. It's an extremely deadly shot.

@1:10 i shot a buck at that angle, maybe slightly more quartering away. With the "higher up shot from a treestand" I got extremely lucky as I didn't get nearly any as much penetration, So I will never shoot a animal that high ever again. I hit a major artery and he bleed out fast but never touched the lungs or the heart. Its all low shots from here on out for me.

I aimed low on my buck today. He didnt duck I hit him in the white just behind the shoulder. All kinds of blood and noo deer. Blood dries up about 300 yards away all white fur where I hit him. Driving me crazy right now

One tip i would give is to aim more forward on the deer than you think you should. A lot of hunters hit back with most shots because they are afraid of hitting forward, and it makes for a worse hit most of the time. Take your point of aim, then move it a few inches forward on the deer, then let it fly.

Your shot angles especially front and rear are dead on. Be careful aiming higher if your in a stand. Your already looking at the upper porton of the deer because of the elevation especially when they are close. Also ive killed a lot of deer straight down including my biggest buck. I put the pin on the backbone and move just off it an inch. At that angle it shreds the lung and heart and they go 30 to 40 yards at most. It's one of my favorite shots. I shot my best buck that way. I let him go just past straight down and shot him. He jumped, stood up straight on his hind legs and fell over backwards facing me and expired. Your an amazing artist.

That’s because, with the right broadheads, they can. There isn’t a bone in a whitetail that will stop a heavy arrow with the stout machined single bevel broadhead.

@@gsnicholas8522 there are a lot of things that “can” be done that shouldn’t be talked about on a platform that young hunters look at. There’s a thing called hunter ethics that they used to teach. It requires patience, restraint, good conscience, integrity. With these there will be plenty of opportunities at a good clean shot. As long as these things are taught alongside heavy arrows its ok . However, what’s being put out there in s what you are proclaiming and people are taking bad shots and calling them good .

@@tonyviers-de9qi did you ever think that the game changes when the right kind of equipment is used? Ethics is an individual thing. Your ethics may be, and probably are, different than somebody else's. That doesn't make either wrong, just different. I understand what you're saying about new hunters. Maybe we should focus on teaching them to use higher quality equipment instead of limiting their opportunities. A lot of people hunt heavily pressured public land and might only get one less than ideal opportunity a year or two. Why should they not be able to take advantage of that opportunity? If they're using equipment up to the task there's no reason not to, if they choose. Remember, cape buffalo are regularly taken with archery equipment. Their rib bones are as heavy or heavier than any bone a whitetail has. For some reason complete pass throughs are fairly common while breaking bones on the buffalo. I wonder why? Good equipment choices make all the difference. There is a very extensive study with nearly 30 years research and data with thousands of animals harvested to very what I'm saying. Knowledge and facts trump feelings every time.

Yes, you may need to hold your pin lower (depends on how high you are in the tree, the shot distance, your bow setup, etc) but the point of impact on the deer's body needs to be higher if you're shooting at a downward angle

Whats wrong with the modern hunter being afraid of a neck shot. My grandfather shot over 100 deer in his lifetime and he only shot them in the neck with an 30-06. Never lost a deer. Quit kills!

Ryan, I don't see the skeleton of the deer before I shoot it. Its good to know the anatomy, but you need to show the bullet placement with reference to the outside of the body. I take it you don't hunt and therefore use laminated pictures in the classroom to instruct hunters where to aim. In the future you should include a 3D deer model to show bullet placement on the outside of the body which is what we actually see in the field. This video is pretty much a waist of time. I was totally disappointed not to see actual deer figure.

I agree with you. Straight above the front leg, lower 1/3 for broadside shots. Adjusted slightly for quartering shots. The top of the heart and the major vessels leaving the heart is always my intended target.

I'm not a fan of bow hunting at all for the following reasons. Most bow hunting is done from a hide or high tree chair... To me, that's not hunting.... It's ambushing, baiting, or bush wacking... if not a 3 in 1. To me, its not hunting etiquette. Hunting is getting off your backside.. Foot slogging, bushcraft, camouflage, tracking, stalking, leopard crawling, the animal you wish to shoot. Secondly, we very very seldom see a one-shot kill with a bow... I've only seen one when a warthog was shot at about 7 paces in the head, a perfect drop shot... We never see the injured, gut shots or injured bow hunting boboos... What I would like to point out for hunters... especially scope sights make bullet placement a lot easier. That you are aiming or shooting at a target inside a target. For body shots, I place my vertical cross hair on the hump above the shoulders because it is above the heart and does not matter at what angle the deer is standing... the bullet should hit the heart, as said a third of the body height. Then, a perfect drop shot from the side is also on the hump, about a quarter down, where the two shoulder blades meet with the spine and neck vertebrae... thats any animals diff, drive shaft, steering mechanism, gearbox... to me, the perfect drop shot. Then a side on head shot, a line between the eye and ear... is a brain bullet placement shot.. A frontal head shot is a line from each ear across to the opposite eye. Where those two lines cross is a home run, a one shot, drop shot Hope this improve your hunting skills.. Happy hunting.😊

I absolutely refute everything you have said about archery hunting. It takes much more skill, practice, and preperation to be an effective archery hunter. Anyone can kill an animal from hundreds of yards away with a rifle. To kill an animal with a bow, most people have an effective range of 50 yards or less. This means we either need to "Stalk, and leopard crawl" into extrememly close range, or study and learn the movements of the animal so that we can intercept it. A rifle hunter can wander around aimlessly and still have a great chance of killing an animal. Ive killed close to a dozen deer with my bow, and a handful of other animals, and have never neeeded more than one arrow, and have never even had to track an animal because they have all died close enough that I can see them. I believe most people should stick with rifle hunting, but those that want to put in the effort and dedication can graduate to archery.
