As an armchair enthusiast, id bet that would be a good drill to discourage the rider from doing the "trust fall" thing, or subconsciously reaching for the snow.

Well I do not know about that but last year, when I was riding my father board, I hitted a small mound of snow with my face because I didn't look well enough where I was going. The effect on my turn could be seen in the print I left in the snow. A sudden very irregular shortening of the turn radius that alternated betwen carve and sliding turn and a few feet further, nothing as this is were I finally crashed. In the end the other snowboard instructors laughed a lot and said it was a rather spectacular crash but it didn't hurt at all, except for my pride.

Ive been learning these after watching your tutorials, thanks for the help. Today the lifties and some other riders were commenting on my carves and giving high fives/thumbs ups etc. it’s a really fun skill to throw down. Knees bent early is key, as little pressure on your arm as possible, only use your arm as a feeler gauge to measure how much distance is between you and the snow. Always check uphill before you throw these down. It makes for great style points coming up to the lift if you don’t bail, just don’t put anyone at risk if you’re going to be a hot shot!

Incredible how advice can help. I´ve been trying to get low on toeside carves, but I never connected the dots to get low first, and THEN stretch out. Tried it yesterday morning, suddenly I can carve pretty much horizontally. You the man, mr. Knapton.

feeling like this is just like math and physics. It never ages! Watched this frame by frame and studied how Ryan carves. If you do the comparison you can clearly see that the other guy only spend 70 days on the slope since he is still kind of hunched over. However, if you look at how Ryan does it, every single time, if you pause and take screenshots of them, you will never know are they multiple screenshots of the same carve, or different carves, they are all the same! Perfect bending knees and laying out each every single time!

Something that has helped me do laid out carves on the east coast specifically is thick leather Klondike chopper mitts. The thick leather protects your hands in variable conditions much better than traditional gortex gloves. Another bonus is they are more than half the price of gortex gloves.

For years I have been riding a board on wich i have 3cm boot out on both heels and toes, I successfuly addapted my position and I can do those laid out turn if the snow is really firm. When the snow is soft there is no way I can do those turn with my board as in no time my boots dig it the snow and lift my edge from it. How I did it with my board is mostly by setting my highback to be way more inclined, so the board isn't as inclined when my legs are almost straight and I poke my but a little furter to just get a little more distance betwen my toes and the snow. Because of that it often doesn't work at high speed since inclination of the board with the snow is lower, but it is still doable. Still it is way easier with my fater board since I only boot out about 1cm each side, effectively allowing me to fully lay-out on the snow as long as it is not too soft.
