Lawn rolling - best way to roll lawn with near instant results. Core aerate lawn first. This removes plugs to allow roller to mush hills in lawn down flat. Once done rolling lawn aerate lawn again immideatly to relieve compaction factor from rolling lawn. Once done you have near flat lawn, the remaining core plugs will dissolve and wash into low spots over time and the lawn will be level. Bonus with aeration twice is you get thicker lawn with it also being flat. Down side is you need to reserve a good portion of day to do all this on a property. I've solved many bumpy lawn issues with this technique but it takes time to get it done. I have 3 point aerator and 1,000 lb roller that I have no choice but to use compact garden tractor with and it still takes time to get done.

In Europe it's the new trend, even in the cities they often let the grass grow high in green spaces, parts of the parks. Not sure it helps with the rising number of people suffering from hayfever, but it's more "ecological", offers more diversity in plants, insects, etc... and it's also cheaper to maintain ! I love nature, too, but a clean lawn is something on another level, not only the look of it, but also if you want to seat on it, play, or walk barefoot !

A quick thought about compaction from a semi-experienced cricket pitch groundsman. When trying to compact a cricket pitch in order to make it more bouncy and the bounce truer, you would not roll when very dry or very wet but the best results would be when the ground has some moisture in it and is pliable. If the ground is too hard it won’t compress evenly all the way down, you’ll just be compressing the top inch or less. If the ground is very wet then you get no compression because the ground is full of water. So, turning this around for the garden lawn where we don’t want compression... Don’t roll when it is too dry, you will get no results or just damage the grass roots. Don’t roll when it’s damp because then you’ll get lots of compaction which you don’t want. You want to water really thoroughly to ensure a substantial density of water going down several inches into the soil and THEN roll. You’ll flatten the surface but won’t compress the soil meaning no compaction or damage to the grass roots.

I've wanted to try a roller. We live on your typical Iowa farm. Our lawn is bumpy. So bad that it throws me all over when mowing. Wherever I had bumps/uneven places, I put top soil on top of the holes. I then took a heavy 8 foot 4 x 4, drilled holes at each ends, then ran some bungi wire threw the holes and then tied that to my mower. I drug the board of those spots several times, worked like a charm.

lots of lawn nerds use grass for this, because it doesn't move as easily or as fast as soil does, so it holds the lawns flat better and longer. Just use a levelling rake to drag the sand and it fills in the low spots

My Allis Chalmers 712S doesn't need chains to plow and i can fix ruts, woo hoo.

If your lawn has low areas that are significantly large and you need to level them, if your lawn has underground tunnels from moles etc, or soil heave due to freeze or similar, then you need to use a lawn roller to compact the tunnels. Unless you seriously overdo it, or keep using the lawn roller, compaction will not be a problem. Experience has taught me that.

I have a lawn service roll my lawn with a small size self propelled riding asphalt roller each spring after after I am sure there will be no more frosts and after a prolong rainy period. The lawn cannot be spongy wet but should "soft" to a depth of about 2". It doesn't necessarily "level" the lawn. It is meant to keep the roots of the grass in good contact with the soil and SMOOTH out any bumps that have been cause by freezing and thawing. Mowing my lawn is like running it over a concrete driveway. My lawn has no bumps at all which makes it appear much nicer and easier to mow. Soil here is clay and very hard. I core aerate each fall, right around the time of first frost, when soil is relatively soft and apply a winter fertilizer very shortly after the aeration.

I always roll my lawn in the spring when the ground is soft and yes I have lawn tractor and a towable roller
@tomrum425 жыл бұрын
IMO the best time to roll is in the spring after the frost is out and a day after a good soaking rain. I have mine rolled every year by a local landscaping contractor who uses a couple of smaller sized ride-on asphalt rollers that are way heavier than any "lawn" rollers. My yard ends up as flat as my concrete driveway which makes it a joy to mow. Mower doesn't bounce all over the place and the lawn is mowed it looks like it is a green parking lot. The contractor that I use also rolls all of the athletic fields for the area schools and parks. In addition to smoothing out the bumps and making the lawn look nice, rolling helps to get the lawn roots in firm contact with the soil after winter freeze and thaw.
@pingpong96564 жыл бұрын
Many people say compaction kills the grass - what is the truth?
@tomrum424 жыл бұрын
@@pingpong9656 In northern states where people get snow and very cold weather, the ground heaves during freezing and thawing. Often this makes the roots of the turf lose good and full contact with the soil. Rolling after spring thaw will push the turf and turf roots into full contact with the soil. Any compaction that has occurred due to rolling will loosen after a few rains.
@gregodell82593 жыл бұрын
My father was an asphalt paving contractor in N Ohio. Springtime was rolling season. We contracted out our rollers to larger estates to roll their lawns. This was only done in spring when frost was coming out of the ground. Leveling with a roller is to fix structure deep, below the roots. Otherwise, you defeat the purpose and only get the top inch or two mushing the roots. When frost is coming out, you would definitely need a tractor to pull!
@kimberlyabbott48313 жыл бұрын
How heavy were your rollers? My issue is varmint's creating tunnels beneath my grass but I don't know if I can get a very big one in my yard so I may have to work with the smaller ones ~300 lbs. So wondering if they would do much good or would they only just squish roots?
@VisFatur Жыл бұрын
If you're used to rolling lawns with asphalt rollers, how would you know what a hand-propelled roller was capable of? Here's a practical view, based on actual experience. Although the net weight of a hand-propelled roller might be 30 lbs or less, when filled with water - or better, sand - a 16 gallon capacity could weigh 130 lbs or more with water, or more than 260 lbs using sand. And as heavy as that might seem, it's still controllable by hand, no tractor required. In my experience that has proven to be more than adequate for the job, whether frost-heaved, mole holes,etc., and there's no fresh tractor wheel ruts to level either. And whichever, hand or tractor, the lawn will still need aerating at least once a year.

Main thing we use our rollers for is when topdressing and seeding to press the seeds and help prevent them running off. It’s also great for sod jobs when prepping soil and after laying sod to hit it again. It also works really good when doing interlocking. Roll screening after it’s been smoothed with a grading rake for a very smooth finish to lay pavers. Once the pavers are installed run over them with a plate tamper to smooth out ant uneven pavers and compact the screening layer. For bigger jobs like a wide u shape drive with 3-4 car garage on one end a ride on roller with vibration available to also use compacting the base would be more useful. Can still use the small roller for the screening though since you don’t want it to be compacted to much before the pavers are installed since it will be compacted after the driveway is done with the ride on roller vibrating or a plate tamper for smaller driveways.

Some constructive criticism: Sorry to say but the prime conditions for a lawn roller to be most effective is when the top layer of a lawn is saturated really well with water whether it's during or after a wet Spring, after a decent rain, or a medium watering as wet soil will more easily compact or flatten than dry soil. As you found, you might find SOME success with certain areas on dry soil, but certainly not as much as with wet soil, it just makes logical sense per physics. Point being I wouldn't even bother rolling a lawn unless the top soil was at least somewhat moist depending on how uneven the areas you want to make flat are. That said, I would recommend aerating the lawn sometime after that, preferably the fall, because you don't want a compacted top layer of soil as certain weeds like dandelions thrive in compacted soil. And the same parameters go for aeration. You should only aerate your lawn when the soil is moist and not after weeks or months of dry climate or drought as aeration can damage an already stressed long and aerating is just easier when the top soil is moist anyways.
@jonathandaniels87516 жыл бұрын

@James2256 жыл бұрын
At 3:33 he mentioned "a couple other things" in which he did include mentioning watering the lawn beforehand, but it's quite apparent he didn't or didn't saturate the lawn NEARLY enough given the fact that the surface of the roller never became even slightly damp throughout the whole video. If the roller's surface isn't getting ANY moisture on it, then the lawn is not watered nearly enough. LOL Maybe you should go back and watch it....... No really, go watch how the roller never collects any moisture at all and tell me that's a sufficiently watered lawn. I'll wait here........ 😉

When I renovated my lawn I rented one and it didn't live up to my expectations. Glad it was only a $12 rental.

Yeah for $10 I decided I might as well give it a shot.

Ryan, I had some trees cut in my yard and due to it having rained the day before I have a lot of uneven damage to the lawn from machinery used. Not sure this would help me, any recommendations? A manual tamper? Plate compactor?

Of course lawn rollers work and best after a spring thaw when areas have heaved or sunk. Identify shallow areas in your lawn, usually after a good rain, mark their perimeter - even if you need to use an umbrella - and fill them afterwards.
