FLIPPING HARD DRUM BREAKS ON SP404 MKII // How to Process Drum Break Vinyl Samples for Your Beats

I have been using the SP404 MK2 for a while now and am loving some of its features. In this video I go through my process for recording, flipping, and adding effects to drum breaks to get the hardest sound.
For this beat I used the SP404 MKII as the standalone tool to flip the vinyl samples, including drums, melodies, and bass.
I hope you enjoy this workflow, and the sample based beat, and I hope the video provides some inspiration for your own production. I will be in the comments, so let me know what you want to see in a future video!

Hello Ryan, shortcut for deleting pads from the sequence: hold pattern edit and del button at the same time, select the pads you want to delete and push enter, big time saver you don't have to wait 8 bars. Love your vids !

Hoping to see more SP404 MK2 videos! Got one awhile ago, but sample based production is so new to me that my SP404 has become an effects unit for my Syntakt and Digitone. Been drawn back to trying to do more sample stuff, but sadly very few people do full beats/tutorials with the SP404, so thanks for this video showing the full process.

Your facial hair has this magical quality of never seeming to change very much, and yet always being just a little different the next time you see it. Amazing and inspirational channel. Even though I can only directly apply the knowledge from your videos on the akai mpc, I really enjoy watching you work with gear that I'm not familiar with. The SP404 seems like something nice to have in addition to the mpc. The different workflow automatically inspires different ideas and approaches, plus it looks like a much lighter and portable toy to bring along for those long journeys where I end up with the free time to lose my head.

This video was just the thing I needed! I've been looking into buying the SP-404 MK2 for a hot minute now, but I felt like I was jumping into unknown lands due to all of the shortcuts and the workflow being a bit different compared to other machines. Luckily, there are videos like this that make it clear how to do a thing and what you're doing with the thing. Now I'm 100% certain I'll be buying this thing :)

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I do have a question. So I’m currently working with samples (mostly from Splice since I apparently racked up over 4000 samples before canceling, haha) and I find it hard to come up with more than one variation since most of them are just a simple progression. Any tips on how to work with different melodic samples and making them gel with each other?

The most overly complicated machine ever made. I tried to get with it. But there’s just to much. I don’t get why you can’t just record a beat and add what you want without making patterns and deleting patterns then resampling patterns. When I could grab my mpc and do all that in 10 minutes. Not a diss to your video. Well done on that part. You made the most sense outta all the reviews on this crazy thing. If mpc made a product this small and compact and portable I would love to see that. Anyways just a small rant to anyone thinking about gettin one that’s not a genius like me. Or if you just like finger drumming and recording on pads this device isn’t for you either. Mpc can do all this and more and make full songs. For song making I don’t think the sp404 is capable of coming close to mpc. Oh yea I really like mpc lol 😂 good review I’m just not a fan if you can’t tell. But I did want to be. 😢

One thing I'm looking for is how to auto stretch a loop to fit 16 steps without having to change the tempo or do any beat matching, something so simple yet I don't believe it's possible on the 404mk2. Other samplers do this natively. Basically how to do everything you did without chopping and using the original break.

The percussion point about there being no key is a bit misleading. Depending on how you are making/mixing your tracks you might want to make sure your drums actually are tuned to the key of the song. It’ll make the final mix tighter but… that’s if you want that.
