Firearms offences are taken seriously in Australia. It's not a catch and release system or a Laissez-faire approach like the USA with its "Right to Bear Arms" and 2 mass shootings per day. There is a law that says you may carry licensed firearms in your stowed luggage, although you may have to inform the Pilot of the ammunition, however that is different to customs laws, and of course she would need to be a member of an Australian gun club to get a pistol licence and without that owning a pistol is illegal.
@smalltime0Ай бұрын

@Goatcha_MАй бұрын
@@smalltime0 Possibly a fine yes, but unlikely to get jail time. I'm far from an expert, I just know from my time working a Departures security checkpoint that if we found illegal items such as pepper spray or credit card knives we had to inform the police and the person was detained until the police dealt with it. As long as there were no other issues they generally got to fly when the police were finished, the items confiscated. I don't know whether fines were levied, outside of my area. But if we found a firearm or IED, that would be a different matter entirely.

At the local Coles the Supervisor ran through the parking lot to return a lady's bankcard to her. After the lady was at the self-checkout, she went to pay but realised that she had left her card at home. She asked the Supervisor if she could leave the items to retrieve her card and return for them, the Supervisor agreed, even at 8:30pm. The invoice makes sense: $14.50 is the total. The gst is a portion of the $14.50. It needs to be written that way so GST can be calculated at the end of the tax year. It’s not additional. Australia does not "add" tax at checkout, like USA does. Instead, they show how much was GST (Good & Services Tax). If you are a business, you can buy goods GST exempt (or be refunded at tax time), to avoid the tax compounding as items trade hands. So GST needs to be listed on a receipt.

A point of correction, there are plenty of registered, approved pistol clubs around Australia and these are the only places you can legally use a pistol and then only for competition purposes. Generally a criminal deportation only happens when a jail sentence of 10 years or more is given. In her case she would have just be made to leave after her jail term ended. It's a subtle difference between being removed from a country, or deported. If you are deported you have to declare it to any country you try to visit and will pretty much mean you can never travel internationally again. The scary thing in Australia is permanent residents who haven't taken up Australian citizenship can be criminally deported after a long jail term, meaning there has been people (usually British or from New Zealand) who come to Australia as babies or young children and find as an adult they are deported to a country they have never lived in.

The extra on the bank statement was almost certainly a bank charge, eg for using a credit card. This has become more common in Australia recently. ie the cost of the drinks was 14.50, which included the GST. Then the bank added a "processing" charge, for transferring the money. The shop would never have been aware of that extra charge.

There will be a sign in the shop stating that there is a surcharge on eftpos transactions. It does not have to be on the invoice but it does have to be displayed in the store.
@bhsaproductionАй бұрын
GST (Goods & Services Tax) is charged on most food items and services provided. This is included in the listed price (with the exception of some fresh/unprocessed whole foods which are exempt), however - the total GST amount is listed on the docket so you know what tax you've paid and if applicable, what you can claim back in your tax return [ie a small cafe buying groceries to include in the meals they sell]. As this was from a small coffee shop - the tax invoice / bill, may have been given to the customer at their table & when they went to pay - possibly used a card that incurred a processing fee. As long as the fee was disclosed before the transaction or the order was placed, this is fine.
@judithstrachan9399Ай бұрын
I think that’s the trouble. If it’s a credit card charge by the shop, they should have told the customer. If it’s a later charge, the customer is still supposed to be told by the person/ organisation applying the charge. The bank should be able to find out, but do we bother for 11c?
@bhsaproductionАй бұрын
According to ACCC website - A business can add a surcharge for paying by card, but no more than the cost they incurred. The business must be able to prove the cost it's based on. If payment options without a surcharge aren't offered, they must include the surcharge in the displayed price. The ave surcharge costs (according to RBA) are Eftpos:

@lionelmrocki7955Ай бұрын
US is not responsible for administering the laws of destination countries. It's up to passengers to be across the restrictions in their destination countries. In the plane, passengers headed for Australia complete a customs declaration. Being untruthful on that declaration is serious business.

On the Coffee Club receipt and bank statement - the GST is included in the price, the receipt just shows how much it is (as it is 10% of the amount and it is listed as $1.32, then the amount before GST would have been something just under $13.20). The extra 11c is likely a credit card surcharge which the Coffee Club has passed onto the customer at transaction time. It should have shown up on the credit card machine but not necessarily on the receipt.

Forget about our strict gun laws introduced after Port Arthur. Those laws are about long firearms. Pistols have been illegal in Australia since colonial times. Prior, you could carry a rifle down the main street of Brisbane; no one would care as long as it was wrapped in paper. Having a pistol was always "being in possession of a concealable weapon."
@el-violadorАй бұрын
14:34 that extra charge will be a surcharge from the bank. Some places have a pointless surcharge for pay wave or and other such methods of paying (the vending machine at my workplace has a 25 cent add on for card). It usually is written on the checkout somewhere. That's why it came from the bank and not the receipt
@lynneclarke626521 күн бұрын
The GST one - the sales tax is always shown separately right down the bottom of the receipt. However the GST is INCLUDED as part of the cost of the meal. So it shows up twice on the receipt. There’s been a bit of a storm about banks charging people to access their own money. There are changes in the wind - eg ATMs are likely to be fee free.

My first job out of High School here in Australia 39 years ago, was collecting trolleys and packing groceries for customers at the local Supermarket. 35 years later I was standing in line at the Checkout at my Local Coles Supermarket (FYI all the staff there know me and what I used to do, I have shopped there for almost 25 years) and I was listening to a Millenial complain about how long it was taking to get through the checkouts. I sympathised with her and told her I had come up with a Marvellous Idea to make the process Faster. When she asked what it was I told he "We need to get young men who have just left school and have them stand at the end of the Checkouts packing your groceries so the Cashier doesn't have to do it." She thought this was a Genius Idea and asked where I came up with it from and the Cashier told her, "He's Trolling you love, thats what they used to do about 30 years ago and it was his first job." Laughing her head of the entire time. Strangely enough the customer was not impressed.

Local Fish & Chip Shops are the best fast food in Australia. They can be run by people of any nationality, which makes each one different. In the 60's/70's/80's, they were run by Italians, Greeks & Anglos. In the 90's/00's more and more were being run by Middle Eastern & Asian people. The tax is included in the purchase price, but by law they have to break down the item price, tax, and total cost on the receipt/invoice (this is for many reasons including if it's a business charge, they need to declare the pre tax) The reason the bank statement will be different is bank eftpos charges - the banks charge the retailer to use the eftpos service and they oncharge that to the customer (they will have a notice at the register declaring this). Since this is not to do with the items/service purchased, but to do with the customers' use of the eftpos system, it does not appear on the retailers' till receipt. It will only appear eftpos docket. So actually the documents they posted are correct. The till receipt will exclude eftpos charge, and the bank statement will include the eftpos charge, hence the higher amount on the statement. The main issue in this case is with the financial institutions, not the retailer, and whether the eftpos charges by them to the retailer are reasonable.
@DasyuridАй бұрын
The tax on the receipt isn’t to be added to the $14.50, it’s just informing you how much of the $14.50 is Goods & Services Tax. If you’re registered for GST and the receipt is for something you can claim back then it makes life a little easier if it says how much GST you paid when you’re adding them all up to full in your BAS (Business Activity Statement) for the ATO (Australian Tax Office). Yeah, we can do lots of TLAs too. The 11¢ increase seems to be just a surcharge for paying on a credit card. I believe it’s totally legal as long as they have a sign up somewhere close to the card machine warning you about it. Quite often you’ll pay a surcharge for using contactless payment, including things like Apple Pay, but won’t pay anything extra for putting your card in the machine and selecting Cheque Account. I think it’s because contactless payments go through the credit card system and the shops all get charged merchants fees for processing credit card payments, but don’t get charged for debit cards that take the money from your everyday bank account.

Rouse hill coffee club......! Hey that's my suburb... 😳😂 To put the gun in context, we are not allowed to just travel with guns, it has to be for a reason.. I have 3 rifles and all the permits to posses, shoot and hunt with them, but if I just put one in the car and go shopping, visit a mates place and get checked by the police at a random stop and they see it, I loose all my permits for 10yrs and if another member of the family didn't have the same permits they would confiscate and destroy the guns in 14 days.... So if she had gotten away with it and had it out in public it would definitely freak people out, as pistols have even tighter restriction to usage and carry, strictly from home to range and back again, any deviations from this route would be loss of permits and confiscation of pistol..!
