Interesting contrast. Back then, I used to listen to 'American Top 40 with Kasey Kasem' and didn't know half the songs! An Aussie artist on there was as rare as hen's teeth. In the US in the 80s, when I lived there, radio stations only occasionally played anything NOT by an American group; the exception was usually massive UK hits. No wonder Ryan doesn't know half these songs and has rarely, if ever, heard of any of the artists. Rather sad that he has to relate Olivia Newton-John to 'Grease' and 'Xanadu' (both US productions) before he recognises her.

Crazy facts: AC/DC used to play the Sunday afternoon session at my local pub [Leederville Hotel] in Perth, Western Australia. The music was just as iconic then as it is now; the session was always packed. The 'Highway to Hell' song is about a stretch of the Canning Highway between one pub they played at [the Raffles Hotel, Applecross] and another pub in Fremantle. They would drive from one to the other between gigs and usually 'downing a few' beers... hence, highway to hell.

Yes, ‘Sealed with a Kiss’ by Jason Donovan sounds “way older than the eighties” because it’s a cover of a song originally recorded in 1960 by the Four Voices, and became a hit in 1962 for Bryan Hyland. Jason Donovan resurrected it in 1989, when he left Australian television to become a pop star in the UK along with Kylie Minogue. Kylie’s first hit, Locomotion, was also a cover - and a hit from 1962. It was written by Carole King and Jerry Goffin, and was a hit for their babysitter, Little Eva.

@@Laconic-ws4bz That’s true. But, to be fair, they never belonged to the rock genre. Personally, I doubt Donovan has ever been taken seriously as a musician in Australia - although I have British friends who do. (I have no idea why. I’ve always thought of ‘Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ as a musical for primary school kids.) Kylie, on the other hand, has worked relentlessly on her skills as a singer, performer, song-writer and producer over 40 years. She deserves kudos for her work ethic and her success. But her genre is dance-club pop (and she’s dipped her toes into country & western). She’s a pop princess, yes, but no rock chick.

Yes, Ryan. "Sealed With a Kiss" was a cover. So was "Funky Town".

Kylie was huge here and especially in Britain and the continent. She was the ex-girlfriend of the late Michael Hutchence from INXS as well. She started as a actress in a soap well known here called NEIGHBOURS. People like Guy Pearce and Margot Robbie started out in that and another famous soapie from here called HOME AND AWAY. When Neighbours cast went to England back in the late 80's they were mobbed. Kylie did really well on the concert circuit as a singer/dancer. Her name 'Minogue' is pronounced min-ow-g!

A couple of things to consider: Rick Springfield was a pop star in Australia in the early 80's, then turned to acting, appearing for over a decade on tye US soap "General Hospital"; Kylie Minogue has been around for over 40 years, since the 90's in the UK, also successfully scuppering Mz Jenner's attempted Trademark of "Kylie"; Slim Dusty had been in the industry for over 30 years by 1980, and "Duncan" was a re-release, a famous line in the song is literally "Key Change" as they go from C to B for the last verse; if you can react to the entire "Only Nineteen", even the more modern edition with the Herd, particularly tying into April 25; you keep skirting around Olivia Newton-John, and did mention Grease, but didn't put 2 & 2 together, ie. Sandy; finally, some are covers - Pseudo Echo covered Lipps Inc's "Funky Town", Kylie's "Loco Motion" was originally Little Eva in the 60's, Jason Donovan's "Sealed with a kiss" was also from the 60's.

John Farnham has retired but he’s a living legend here at home. We all love him to bits! He’s the best example of an Aussie Larrikin you’ll find anywhere! 🇦🇺❤️❤️❤️. There are many reactions to his songs on YT and since you seem not to know who he is, (he’s remained loyal to Australia since the late sixties), you should look for everything you can find, learn his songs and enjoy them for the rest of your life! He has an amazing vocal range and a voice that can handle any genre. Jimmy Barnes, former lead singer of Cold Chisel, and John have sung together a few times and their voices merge into a phenomenon! Read comments on videos so you can learn even more from fans who know and love these guys, especially John! Watch lots of interviews with John too, so you get to know who he is as a human being! 🥰🥰🥰🇦🇺

@@mariettew-b9629 Yes! Plus he’s always been willing to share the stage with other artists or take a step back to let them shine! John has humility. I remember many years ago, I attended one of his concerts and after the show ended, everyone made their way to the carpark out the back of the venue, a multi-storey carpark, but not many left, most of us stayed and waited for John to exit the building because we wanted to cheer for him one last time. We waited, and waited, and finally, out he came, and the entire carpark erupted with cheers, whistles and applause. John stood there and accepted it all, for a couple of minutes, and then he began to signal us so we would stop. His finger went up to his lips 🤫🤫 and he kept lowering his hands until there was absolute silence. At the top of his lungs, he shouted, “THANK YOU!!!” And we all cheered again! I think everyone’s heart was on fire, I know mine was! This guy had just spent the last couple of hours singing, joking and interacting with us from the stage, and we wanted to love him! He allowed us to do that and then thanked us sincerely! I pray for his full recovery and a blessed retirement. God bless you, John! 🙏🥰🇦🇺

Ref. Joe Dolce and “Shaddup You Face”: Ryan, the back story to this song is that this phrase was often said by Joe’s Italian grandmother. It was an instant hit and had a catchy tune. The Italians were our biggest migrant group along with Greeks at the time but we all understood the sentiment. 😂 I also recommend that you watch John Farnham, especially “You’re The Voice” and “Help” where he’s backed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and also “A Touch Of Paradise” and “Burn For You” which are beautiful ballads.

I married a 1/2 Italian man, Australian mum who quickly left the picture but my FIL was a truly extraordinary Italian man. He always lived with my husband and 5 kids until my husband left with someone else and my FIL stayed with me. He tried over the years to teach my kids Italian but they were not interested but I thanks to him have a wonderful grasp of Italian profanity. I miss him terribly but I remember the days at school where Italians and Maltese people etc were called "wogs" and I'm not sure that I'm allowed to reference that word but I too loved the "Shaddup a your face" song and so did the Italians and Maltese people I knew. Those were good days.

My kids in their 20's now have finally acknowledged that the 80's music, especially Aussie music is the bomb and way better than anything made recently......only took 15 yrs for them to realise. They go through my music collection and crank up my old vinyl on my old Sharp midi system..Not unusual to pull in the driveway and hear Cold Chisel blasting outside. Good thing my neighbours like the 80's stuff.
