Staging for an Atlantic Crossing: A tale of Stormy Seas, Learning Patience, and Rum Swizzle #99

Күн бұрын

When we first left Bonaire to sail across the Atlantic to the Azores, we never intended on stopping anywhere on the way. But after a serious week of beating into the wind, our bodies craved a break on land (as well as a burger and a beer)
Our VHF broke as soon as we arrived in Bermuda, and we knew that stopping was the absolute right decision for us to make at this point.
We were going to spend 5 days max in Bermuda.... we failed.
This is a tale of stormy seas, learning patience, and Rum Swizzle.

Okay Sophie as I don’t drink alcohol I can tell you that there is a downside to my lack of drinking compare to you. As a non-drinker when I wake up in the morning that’s the best I’m gonna feel all day. However, if you’re a Sophie type person who enjoys a drink or two with friends in a safe environment you know and can be rest assured that you will wake up and gradually feel better as the day goes on. Aren’t you lucky in knowing this. thank you so much for your channel is it lift my spirits.

With a wide-ranging emotions from anxiety of having the possibly of a sailboat anchor drag into you, to laughter & fun, Sophie getting "slighty" intoxicated, to see Ryan relax and cut loose with a song & dance. Next it would be great to see him do a little pole dance 🕺 💃. As aways, fair winds, be safe and be real. SV Misty Blue Yonder

Poor Sophie, over exposure to rum swizzle! This reminds me of a week sailing 20 years ago in where we had a plan to sail down to Douranenez. The weather shifted and so make a dash for Perros-Guriec, and try and get through the lock while the tail end of a hurricane blew threw. After 48 hours we were all well pickled in Ricard pastis.

Been in St. George's Harbour many times and have been through as much or worse at anchor each time. You have to keep a close eye on the upcoming winds and move in advance to the correct side of the harbour in advance. While YOUR anchor might hold, there are often lots of other boats (as you found out) that drag. No fun to be in that situation so set yourself up in advance to be on the lee shore. There is good holding on both sides.

Memorable Bermuda hangover Sophie ! Ryan, we have the "Beyond Meat" burgers for a vegetarian equivalent to a steak. What the price of the each PCR test in Bermuda $ ? If the neighbour's boat continued to drag anchor to the point of sure collision do you defend it by placing fenders at you bow or do you cut the bitter end of your anchor rode, place a bouy to mark your anchor and motor away. Then come back to the bouy after the storm have passed, locate the rode end, use a line to hoist it back to your boat ? Great adventures and safe passage. Thanks.
@RyanSophieSailing
@RyanSophieSailing 3 жыл бұрын
I think that for the three of us, the entire testing protocol ended up costing a little over 200$. "Funny enough" we have been in that situation already, where a boat dragged onto us, and it's really hard to say what we would do, cause it really depends on the situation. What we ended up doing was raising our own anchor, and it was absolutely chaotic. Unmanned boats on anchor during a storm are a nightmare.

They are inspected and you get fined if you do not do what needs to be done. Oh how that comes Sophie, a few thinks in 3 weeks, in light winds, are brocken? I wish you get big waves, with schort period of interval time, during 20 days. Afterwards, you may start to understand, for what is made, a blue-watter ocean going s.v. haull.

Dude... Are you telling me that on your "blue water ocean going boats", canvas never rips and electronic equipment never fails?! Cause dang... wouldn't that be awesome 😂 If you want to poke fun at our philosophy about boats, I recommend you go for something a little more structural next time. I was going to wish you a lifetime of looking like a fool in the comment section, but it seems I don't need to.

Governments should spend their efforts teaching the masses what they can do preventing covid instead of just testing for it. There are many things you can take. Vitamin D3 is a big one. Especially since winter is approaching. Good luck people. 👍👍👍

Sophie, why have you decided to start saying A-zores? Why do Americans say A-zores? They have several states, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas and Atlanta, as well as, of course, America. Not one of them is pronounced like they pronounce A-zores. When your American friends say A-merica, A-rizona and A-laska I'll accept A-zores. Sort them out please it sounds ridiculous.

Lesson: Don't buy equipment that has built in obsolesence

In all fairness, we did not buy that equipment, it came with the boat. Also, by nature, everything that's placed on a boat has built in obsolescence :p
