Yes guys, we absolutely messed with you ;) A lot of you guessed that the "secret" we had been keeping was the launch of our "How to get started sailing the World" course, and you would have been close!!! We are in the last stages of post-production and the launch date is set to Thanksgiving week (you can pre-register at www.brighttrip.com/sailing). But really, we are thrilled to introduce you to Barnacle. She is so sweet and she brings us so much joy and happy chaos ;) This is the start of a new adventure for us, and we want to make sure that Barnacle absolutely loves her life!

To help Barnie use the pee pad, when she pees on grass or wherever, take some of the clippings and put them on the pee pad so she can smell her own stuff - thus encouraging her to go on the pad :)

Yeah we’ve been thinking about that! We’re getting off the boat for the winter pretty soon, but we’ll be starting boat potty training in the spring, when she starts having a bit better bladder control.

@@RyanSophieSailing congrats on the new puppy, she is so cute! But…you really need to get her to go on whatever substrate you will use on the boat. ASAP! Once they develop a preference, say on grass, it’s very, very difficult to get them to do something different. I’d take that piece of turf, put it on the dock away from other “natural” materials, and put a decent amount of grass or leaves on it (whatever she usually goes on) and take her to it every time she needs to go so she gets used to that piece of turf. Then take it with you when you leave the boat and keep working on it, take her to it every time. That way when you come back in the spring with that piece of turf, she’ll know that’s her spot, whether it’s on the boat or on the dock. I’ve had one dog that refused to go on the boat, and one that goes on it without issue (trained on a piece of dri-dek), trust me you don’t want the frustration. This your best chance to make it happen!!!!

Cute puppy, congratulations. She looks very much like our two Coton de Tulear, who are part of the same family of dogs (Bolognese, Maltese, Havanese, Bichon Frisé), all of whom have a common ancestor, the Barbichon. It's very smart to expose her to the boat environment when she is very young. Below a certain age, puppies tend to accept strange environments as normal. We took our first Coton sailing on a small boat a week or two after we got him, for that very reason. You have many wonderful years of joy ahead of you.

spray the little spot you want her to relieve herself with a product that indicates for her to go there. can use that product outside as well on a nice patch of grass. worked wonders when i was training my dog many moons ago.

You may want to take her grass pad with you on walks. When she stops, make sure the "grass" is available to her. She will connect the dots fairly quickly.

I have an 11 year old schnoodle (toy Schnauzer and toy poodle 8.5 lbs adopted at 6 years old) watch out they are really really smart, if she doesn't shed, ie she has poodle hair you need to get her used to grooming right away and teeth brushing, that way you will be able to trim her hair when she needs it, also poodle hair matts if not brushed, our dog needs a hair cut every 10 weeks, and she doesn't trust enough to let us do it for her. Great choice for a dog . Congratulations

After two black labradors, we waited for retirement to get our next dog - and a friend announced that her mini schnauzer was having pups. Six and a half years later, I'm a fan of small dogs. They are smart, easy to look after, and every inch a real dog. What a lovely crewmate to have!

So we have a maltipoo and he was 4 lbs at 4 months when he was re-homed to us. He’s 12 lbs now at 10 years old. They are absolutely the sweetest puppies. They have joint and back issues. My little guy had a stroke in his spinal cord a few weeks ago so I would try to limit her ability to jump from anything over 1.5ft. They’re great boat dogs!

Barnacle is DARLING! My family had two Maltese dogs growing up (one after another - first, Connie, then Lorna.). They are also hypoallergenic and minimally shedding like poodles, so you've got a double whammy of those traits. They're great little dogs - spirited, funny, and affectionate. My dad also had them both trained to be carried in a baby Bjorn. I have so many pictures of him on hikes with one of the Malteses in his chest pack. I always thought it was both adorable and hilarious seeing my tall, rugged, farmer/veterinarian dad with this wee ball of fluff in a baby Bjorn out in the mountains. I second the socializing - you're doing great! Keep exposing her to as many people as possible and she'll be happy, social, and well-adjusted. Little dogs like Barnacle need that to be confident because they don't have the stature to ever be bigger than, well, anything, really. I'm so thrilled for you guys! You're going to be great pawrents!

The trick that helped our boat dog learn to use the toilet on the boat was to get a piece of actual sod from the hardware store and then pre-scent it with with some animal pee (we stole some from the cats litter box) but a lot of folks also get another dog to pee on it or capture some while they’ll doing their business on land. By the time the real sod died he completely got the hang of it and now happily will go on the artificial sod with no dramas!

I have a shitzumultese on our yacht and we have used the fake grass mat since she was a puppy and have trained her to go wee wee on command it started off every time we took her for a walk and she went toilet I would say to her good girl wee wee and make a fuss so now if it's to ruff to get her a shore she will use the mat which we put down in the shower and rinse when she's all done, hope this helps 😊 PS she's supper cute 😍

as a lifetime dog lover , my recommendation is Puppy medical insurance! because even the little simple stuff can be expensive, and the big stuff is definitely expensive, and could save her life. Second: safety onboard. Lifey, and lifelines. and maybe netting between the stanchions. Third: healthy diet. I recommend raw diet, but whatever you choose make it a conscious decision. Figured Ryan would be a Lab guy, heck he plans to sail up there. My best dog was a Lab Dane mix, took the young daughter to the pound to pickout a dog one time, she picked out a rat terrier. As a big guy felt funny with that little dog, but we fell in love, as she was a snake killer. Rose the little dog would ride to school with me to pick up the kids, so a people dog too. FYI Sophie you look good with no makeup, sure Ryan has told you that.

A perfect choice, of course I'm biased as we have a ten year old, 10lb Maltipo named Zoe. So lovable, low maintenance, no shedding, and will lick you to death and Zoe loves to sleep on her back with legs straight up - total trusting. Zoe had her own frequent flyer miles flying beneath the seat wherever I went. Now that Zoe is older we have been thinking of getting another and are looking for reputable breeders.
