The first televised 147 was around 1983. Such was the tension that the referee stopped calling out the score once the 147 was becoming likely. Showmen like Ronnie O'Sullivan are still rare these days. His precursor from the 70's and 80's was the late Alex Higgins, a deeply troubled man, but unconventional to say the least. @@waynelowe3329 Prior to his cue getting lost Hendry was still the number one player and won the most events when Ronnie, Higgins and Williams were all competing at their best., Hendry just never recovered from losing his cue. Statistically Hendry was much more successful, and he wasn't exactly competing against scubs - Jimmy White, Steve Davis, Ken Docherty, John Higgins, Mark Williams, Ronnie O'sullivan you name it prior to his cue being lost he had winning records against everybody including Ronnie. And I disagree that Ronnie is playing against tougher opponents, Hendry was playing against Higgins and Williams when they were at the top of their game, Ronnie now is playing against Higgins and Williams well past their best and who's current number 1? Mark Allen?? He couldn't lace the boots of any of the class of '92 in their prime but Hendry not only competed but more often than not came out on top.

@@24magiccarrot I've been watching snooker since 1981. From the time I've been watching snooker, I would rank the players in the following order: 1. Ronnie 2. Hendry 3. S. Davis 4. J. Higgins 5. M. Selby Yes, it took Ronnie longer to beat Stephen's records but several things are at play here. Firstly snooker went into the doldrums. It was horribly mismanaged and as a result for several years you only had 4 professional tournaments a year. That is just disgraceful. As a result it will have taken Ronnie longer to beat some of Hendry's records. The players and managers were reluctant for Barry Hearn to take over the sport but thank God he did. Next, Ronnie had both his parents jailed. His father jailed for murder and his mother for tax evasion. Ronnie ended up with the wrong crowd and taking drugs. Thank God he cleaned himself up. But the damage was done in the sense that he probably lost his best years. Even after that, for him to defy the odds and still be at the top after all those years is amazing. When he's in full flow he is pretty much untouchable. Do you recall how easily he beat Hendry 17-4 at the world championships? I believe those years are behind him now but his game is so good that he can still beat most players using his c game. I did watch him at his full flow as I did watch Hendry and Davis, and I would put Ronnie at his peak higher than Hendry and Davis. But that may be because the tables have changed. The cloth is much thinner now and the balls lighter and more reactive. That makes a huge difference. During Davis's time, frames went on longer. It wasn't unusual to have matches at the world championship end until the early hours of the next morning. As a result the BBC and the WPBSA decided to let frames end faster by making the balls open up easier. Just watch Davis's 147 and how hard he had to hit the balls to get the same amount of screw-back and compare that to Ronnie's shots. It's a whole world of difference. Davis dominated the 80s and Hendry the 90s. Ronnie never dominated. But the question remains, what if you had another exceptional player come along in the 2010s, would Ronnie have got his 7th world title? I don't know. Probably not. But then again, he probably would have got there faster if he had a stable upbringing. It's hard to compare eras but taking everything into account, I believe my list is a fair one.

@johnchristmas75227 ай бұрын
Glad you liked it. The black ball or any colour ball comes back onto the table after its potted so long as there are still reds on the table. To get maximum break you need to pot all the reds with a black until the black comes for the last time, then you have to pot all the colours in sequence:- Yellow(2)Green(3)Brown(4)Blue(5) Pink(6) and finally the Black(7). Potting the balls is difficult because the table is 12feet long and 6feet wide and narrower pockets than a pool table. The most important ball, is the White in that after potting a ball, you need the white ball to be in a good position to pot the next ball. If you watch Ronnie again, you will see, he's always striving to get the white ball in the right position. Sometimes players miss a pot that looks easy but thats because they are cueing to try to get the white ball in the right place afterwards. Try for yourself a snooker table and see just how hard it is to pot a ball, let alone place the white afterwards! Then try to do a max break! You will then I think, realise, just how hard this game is, and just how special a 147 is especially in 5mins 38secs!
@erikholmgren14776 ай бұрын
Small correction: It sounds like you mean that when you have potted the last red ball, no more balls comes back onto the table which is a little wrong, the colored ball (which are all the balls except the reds and the white) you choose to pott directly after you pott a red ball always comes back in play even if there at that time are no more red balls on the table.

Not a pool game
@BlakesPipes6 ай бұрын
@@purpleaki06 i will call it a pool game in my words. its a pool table with 6 holes and balls. to me that is pool, to you? it might be like me calling swimming a water polo game, its people swimming back an forth in a pool of water. same thing to me. all i am saying is, i like snooker, its chess on a pool table. amazing.
@purpleaki066 ай бұрын
@BlakesPipes it's not a pool table. It's a snooker table. That's like saying a hockey pitch is the same as a football pitch because they have goals at each end. Snooker table is far bigger and the pocket much tighter. The balls are a different weight too. There's a reason why no pro pool players have ever attempted professional snooker.

I played snooker 13 years I can’t play anymore. I have his picture of his 7th world title tying Stephen Henry. He’s is the goat of snooker he missed 10 years of not playing. Both of his parents went to jail and he had a drug and alcohol problem. Ronnie took care of his younger sister. I can only imagine what he could have accomplished missing those 10 years. What Ronnie O’Sullivan the Rocket 🚀 has done in the sport of snooker is sensational truly the KING!

The thing about Ronnie it seems is that it's not up to the opponent whether they win or not even today. It's how Ronnie is feeling . I think it's a case of if Ronnie wants to win he does . He can even play right of left handed just as well. You have no idea how hard it is to get 147 . You could play all day every day for your whole life and never even get close
@WilliamSmith-mx6zeАй бұрын
1:46 The frame didn't start like this. It started with the 15 red balls in a triangle shape, the outline of which you can still see at the start of the video. Each player hit the cue ball not with the intention of potting a ball, but with the idea of just hitting the red balls gently and putting their opponent in a position where they could not pot a ball. This is called safety play - not worrying so much about potting a ball, but putting your opponent in a position where he makes a mistake and this allows you to pot balls more easily.

As almost said earlier, a standard American pool table is 6' long . The English Snooker & Billiards tables are 6' wide and 12' long, so 4 times bigger. The American settlers knew about Snooker and English Billiards, but because the pockets are so tight ( small and with unforgiving corners ) they chose pool and the quarter sized pool table as game of choice. They also chose wide open pockets with corners that suck the ball in to make potting easy, where as the English tables make potting almost impossible unless your aim is perfect.

In addition to the size of the table, 12 feet long by 6 wide, and the slightly smaller pockets, is the key difference that pool pockets tend to attract balls hit towards them that are not dead center because of the way they are cut, while snooker table pockets are completely rounded, so more shots just missing to the left or right will bounce in the jaws and finally decide to escape, where in pool you seldom see the ball bouncing from post to post more than twice before it drops. This means players need to pot the balls dead center to be safe as well as figuring out where to send the cue ball for the next shot.

Lol till 4 weeks ago he was still no.1 in the world despite playing a lot less tournaments every season than others in the top 10.

First thing I want to say: It's great you enjoy the game. 2nd is, it's snooker with a long u sound like in school, not snucker. You might missed the extra price money they have announced, 147000 Pounds for a maximum break... and if you had clicked on Ronnie O'Sullivan's name on the web page you opened, you would have seen that he's a pro since 1992 and only had 15 maximum breaks - that's HOW RARE they are. Enjoy many more snooker games, maybe watch a few games during the world champions or something, it's always nice to see and you learn the rules too. It's always one red followed by a colour that's placed back on the table until all red's are gone - for starters.
@ljfinger7 ай бұрын
It's a 12 foot table but the pockets are also insanely tight. If it's not nearly dead center, it doesn't drop.

It's not always that spectacular, but I do recommend checking out more of the game. Games can get very tactical, but also tense and exciting.

You have just witnessed this on video tape but I remember it 'Live' at the time & I don't think anybody has come close to repeating the feat of this 147 in the time frame that Ronnie achieved ! The only person that would come anywhere close after that 147 would be Ronnie himself but at his age now I think it would be extremely difficult to replicate ! So the chances of seeing anything like that ever again could well be 0% !

He threw his chalk into the crowd for someone to have as a souvenir then realised that he needed to re chalk his cue, he was asking for some chalk to chalk up
@MikeTotem7 ай бұрын
Great reaction :) First, the reds starts out in a triangle with the pink above them and the black below them. Second, as long as there are red balls on the table, the "coloured balls" (not red and white) will be taken back up to the table, as you must put a red followed by a "coloured ball", until there are no more red balls. The black ball gives you 7 points, and the pink gives you 6 points. That's why he uses the black to get to 147 points :) Third, he is not just the GOAT, he is just not world class, he has re-defined world class. He is "The Rocket" for a reason, he is without real comparrison the best of all time, and one of the best sports idols of European history. Ronnie O'Sullivan represents something different, something you don't really find many places in sport today. Snooker and Rugby has this. "Professional Situational Awareness" to such a degree that he defines an entire sport. Only very few people has ever done that, and he is the greatest of them all, for me :)

You should check who has the most 147s. Another thing is scoring over 100. That has to be continuous points. So if you miss something then get back to the table, your point count starts over. Once you get to 73 you have (theoretically) won the game. There aren't enough balls on the table to win, but there are other ways to score points so if it is close, the other player might try something. So Ronnie has over 1000 scores over 100. No one else comes close. Snooker alternates red ball, color ball. So once a color ball is in a pocket, the referee takes it out and returns the color ball to its spot or the nearest available spot if another ball is covering the spot.

If I remember correctly he has done more maximum break than anyone else in history and I think his last 147 was around two weeks ago

Ronnie made his first competitive 147 when he was 15. He was 21 in this video. Ronnie won his first World Championship aged 25 and his most recent (2022) aged 46, making him the oldest to take the title to date. A true legend of his chosen art. He is from an interesting family, his cousin Maria Catalano is a previous women's world number one (runner up in the World Championship five times), his mother spent a year in prison for tax evasion (Ronnie had to look after his eight year old sister) and his father had 18 years in prison for murder. Ronnie had issues with substance abuse early in his career. So, a colourful character with an eventful life.

This is one of those records that can never be broken really. This not only requires the player to be very fast, but also the referee to place the balls back quickly and efficiently.
@Syphenz16 ай бұрын
Ronnie is the best player to ever pick up a que, and a 147 is extremely fucking difficult even for pros. Most pros have never made one in tournament play. And to make one in 5 minutes what Ronnie did is literally unbelievable. This record will never get broken ever thats how good it is since referees these days are slow as fuck.

Ronnie was so locked in he forgot to even chalk his cue on the last few shots..that's what the gesture is about..madness
@mbeale1006 ай бұрын
At the time it was the 20th official 147 in the history of snooker.. And it was the 4th one made at the Crucible (Sheffield), which is a special place for snooker, it’s been the home of the World Championship for nearly 50 years. I referee’d at the Crucible just last week ☺️ Whilst they are still exciting to watch.. they have become a bit more regular these days. Pre 2010 there had been 69 official 147s & in the 14 years since we’ve had 133 taking the total to over 200.

This 147 was made in 1997 and in that time a maximum break in snooker was very rare achievement. When the all players made 2-3 maximums during whole season it was a good season. Today, 147's are more common and during season plares made over 10 maximums.

It was so many years ago now, but it feels to me like he kind of got bored (no competition) at one point, where he pulled all sorts of shenanigans. I think there was one match where he missed an inconsequential shot (the match was fully winnable) and he just walked out. So yeah, everyone agreed that around this point and several years going forward he was pretty much at the very top
@MadasonRock7 ай бұрын
This was down to his Father going to Jail then not long after that his Mother went to Jail too for tax ovation!! This caused Ronnie to fall off the rails somewhat and he got addicted to weed. He openly admits this now. Thats the reasons he was so unstable for a few years and walked out of the match with Stephen Hendry!

No maybe about it ,it's a fact ,statistics don't lie as well as every pro ,commentator, ref ,in fact anybody that has anything to do with the game acknowledges that he's the GOAT. The only person that says he isn't is Ronnie himself, but come on,nobodies going to be that big-headed to say in public ( even if they think it ) that they're the best,he says it's Hendry but stats don't lie
