So one thing that I want to clarify is that the Sophie and Toffee premade molds that I show in the video are technically squish molds, AND open face molds. I didn't want to confuse newbies to the hobby by saying "This is what an open face mold looks like!... Also it's a squish mold." I plan to go over mold types, as well as give the S&T molds a proper review in the near future. :)

You are 100% right to use a respirator. It's not always easy to know if the filters you have on it are rated for fumes though. The pink one in the video is for particulates and not harmful vapors like those from resins. 3M has a wealth of information on which filters should be used with which hazards. I use the pink (2097) in my woodworking, but switch to an activated carbon filter when I do any resin work or aerosol spraying. Great videos, thanks for making them and keep it up!
@Rybonator5 жыл бұрын
The information I found online and on the filter packaging seemed to indicate that it was for harmful vapors :o I'll look into it. Do you perhaps know of 3m filters that work for vapors that I can link instead from your experience? Perhaps I am misunderstanding the fumes that it mentions that they keep out
@vandermore5 жыл бұрын
@@Rybonator Did some digging for the info: Data sheet for the 2097 (particulate and nuisance vapors) multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/5188O/3m-particulate-filter-2097-p100.pdf Here's 3M's page for choosing a filter. It looks like a combination filter ( like ChoriQueso suggests ) is what you want. The black label filters: www.3m.com/3M/en_US/safety-centers-of-expertise-us/respiratory-protection/respirator-selection/ This is a good video that goes over the different types of filters: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoOwe2eKaqd3frs I know from woodworking, a respirator makes a huge difference in my lungs. Using things with solvents or organic vapors is a whole other class of dangers over particulates. The occasional casting is probably fine, frequent casting of things I'd definitely use more than a particulate filter. This turned out longer than I expected. One thing in regards to mold making was something you mentioned in the past, it was making molds using the pressure pot to remove air pockets to get a smooth mold rather then a vacuum chamber. Excellent video! Just a word about respirators and filters: the 3M 2097 Particulate filters shown here do not offer true vapor or VOC protection, just some nuisance odor filtering. They are great for sanding dust, and are probably fine for use with low/no VOC materials, like the Art n Glow resin shown... but many epoxies and resins release some NASTY vapors while curing. For those materials, a true vapor filter (like the 3M 6001, 6006, etc) should be used, ESPECIALLY if you're casting in a not-so-well ventilated area. Happy casting!

@@---we1ok from what I've seen it's much cheaper to make it, all it is is alcohol and sharpie, granted it's not meant for resin it's meant for alcohol ink art, but I don't actually know the difference for alcohol ink for resin or plain art

One thing I've thought about after watching a bunch of anycubic photon videos is whether or not you could print a more "perfect" dice mold instead of doing the d6 hot glued to the dice method. Like you could specifically print sprues for the resin to flow into that are strategically placed to be less intrusive for clipping and sanding.

Great video, very helpful. There are 3 other ways to make molds and it's cheep. 1 Hot glue gun can make UV resin molds, but if I heard right the mold can only make a few before needing to be replaced. 2 Cornstarch and 100% Silicone Tube.(those that need a squeeze gun) 3 100% Silicone Tube and VM&P Naphtha (This is to make a more detailed mold.) I hope this was helpful or at lease given a try.

Thanks for the tips! I've heard of the first 2 but not the third. I wanna look into that :)

@@Rybonator New tricks never hurt, when improving your craft. There is one more thing you can try but this is more of an upgrade then making a mold. This is from the KZbin channel TheCraftsMan SteadyCraftin. 1 1v1 of your silicone mix and Klean Strip Odorless Mineral Spirits, once you make the mold let it set for a wail. The mold will begin to shrink. 2 finish making a mold, place it into a large container and pour the strip till it above the mold. This will make the mold bigger. 3 same as #2 but you used NoVocs. I do think you might like his channel but he does talk slow but he does have great tips.

There's the Smooth-On 14NV which doesn't require a pressure pot (and I used for a long time when I didn't have a pressure pot or vacuum chamber). I would recommend this to people just beginning, with the understanding that if you cast clear dice then you will have bubbles. As well, the chance you will have voids increases significantly if using the sprue molds. One way to help eliminate that is by using a slower curing resin and finding a way to vibrate the mold after its been filled.
@Rybonator5 жыл бұрын
None of these actually require a pressure pot. But if you want to use them for pressure casted dice with no bubbles, it's nice :) Yes you can totally vibrate the mold if you have something that vibrates for an extended period

I switched from latex to nitrile gloves, but I found that my hands were a little bit resin-y after casting. My plan next time is to double up on gloves (using one small and one medium set), but is that a problem you've seen before? Also, on the subject of mold buying, there's a good shop in italy called 'ForestCouple' on etsy whose molds sell for £3-5 - which in bulk (because shipping), can turn out much cheaper than making your own for someone new to the hobby (I know the first £20 I spend on silicone made 4 molds which actually don't seem to work too well (I can't sand the dice down to remove blemishes without removing the numbers pretty much entirely - I think that's a trait of gamescience dice as a base, actually)). It helps you to know whether it's the molds or the resin if you have someone else's molds to compare with! I believe they use kitchen paper tubes for their casting which is really close to dice size so very efficient! This is a really nice video summary! Oh, also, would you be willing to try making/showing us molds with caps (so open-face molds with the extra face)? I'd like to see how they compare to the sprue ones, and I've had trouble with large air bubbles making their way into the sprue and stopping (which messes the die entirely - I believe pressure would help, but not there yet).
@neuroscienxe92665 жыл бұрын
LycanFayn nitrile gloves should keep our everything. It’s what’s used in chemistry labs. There can sometimes be a kind of sticky coating on the inside so maybe it was that? 🤷🏻♀️ Also if your having trouble with large airbubbles in spruce dice, make sure you’re mixing slowly and use a heat gun over the surface of the resin to get out as many bubbles as possible. Another thing you can try is getting an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, which uses sound to vibrate a lot of the bubbles out. It’s cheaper than a pressure pot. Best of luck!
@Rybonator5 жыл бұрын
I have had no problems with my Nitrile gloves :O Like the ocmment below said, maybe it's the coating inside, some come with that. I'll totally give a squish mold (what you described) a shot in the future! That's a great tip, I'll have to check them out for sure, that's hella cheap :) Thank you!
