Rye Castle, Also Known As Ypres Tower, Was Built Around The 13th or 14th century, It Is A Grade 1 Listed Building And Has Been Scheduled As An Ancient Monument.
It’s unclear when the exact date of construction began on this castle, although planning was mentioned as early as 1226 and again 1249, It was certainly completed though by the 14th century.
The castle was originally known as Baddings Tower.
By 1430 the castle became the property of John de Iprys, which led to the name Ypres Tower
It has had a couple of interesting uses over the centuries including a prison and courthouse.
As a prison Ypres Tower had its own full-time gaoler first appointed in 1796.
They added an exercise yard here and a woman’s prison by 1837. The castles use as a prison ended in 1891, when it became the towns morgue.
Creepy stuff, the castle looks formidable, not sure if its a place I would want to be locked up in.
The castle is three storeys high and made from iron-stained sandstone, the plan inside is square with round towers at each corner.
Ypres Tower is one of two sites of Rye Castle Museum, Exhibits in the tower include locally-made medieval pottery, an embroidery depicting many aspects of Rye life, medieval artefacts, activities and town maps.
We are going to share a few highlights inside the castle before ending todays video, if you were interested in visiting the second museum site, you can do so by heading towards nearby East Street.
This is the main exhibit area for the Rye Castle Museum. Opened in 1999, the local history exhibits include fire fighting equipment, trade changes caused by the sea's retreat, maritime history and shipbuilding, antique toys and games, photos, town seals, and archaeological artefacts.

You two had a great day to visit - it sets the stones off well. I enjoyed hearing about the history and seeing a bit about how they lived back then - it's fascinating how places get repurposed over the centuries. Sometimes it makes me wonder if it's clever re-use or spite towards the previous owner.
@StephenandYhana
@StephenandYhana Жыл бұрын
I agree, these historical buildings could well get repurposed for both reasons, Especially if the property was lost financially, religiously or through conflict. The castle was an interesting little visit, it wasn’t a huge site by any means but a fascinating one 😉

A Happy New Year, Stephen and Yhana.Wishing the new year brings you all happiness and prosperity. Wow, the ruins of Rye Castle and Ypres Tower, especially the stone walls, are well-preserved. oh, my, Woman's prison! 1:58 I see a heavy metal door. 4:31 Those cannons and cannonballs intimidate me a little. Have they been used to protect the castle against attacks? Thank you very much for taking us on the walking tour. I can almost feel the touch of those walls. Please accept my apologies. I lived off-grid for 50 days due to devoting all my time to my best friend from AU after her chemo recovery. Now I am anxious and look forward to catching up on your vids. Thank you for your patience.
