About 6 years ago, I bought the Ryobi 18V ONE + combo kit....drill, recip saw, circular saw, light, 2 batteries and the 118 charger. I am retired and make wood crafts as a hobby and to sell at craft events. I have used my drill a lot...I mean a lot...and the charger has always worked like it should....never any problems. My drill is getting some wobble in the chuck and 1 of the batteries finally died, but I have gotten some great use and dependability from my Ryobi tools. I will keep using my old charger until it dies; no need to shell out the money for the latest & greatest charger. I try and keep my batteries charged up and ready for use. If I use up a full charge before the day is over, then that tells my old body ( 66 ) that it's time for me to take a break...!! So that's what I do, and I put the discharged battery on the charger and take a break. Now, if I was a young man on a job site, then my needs for a faster charger just might be important...so it depends on what the needs are. I have a Ridgid 5" random orbit sander and it's smooth as butter. I finally wore it out and while I was waiting for it to get fixed, I thought I would buy a Dewalt 5" random orbit sander to tide me over. Well...what a piece of junk...it vibrated and shook like an earthquake...terrible. I immediately took it back, got my money back and bought another Ridgid. I haven't tried the Ryobi random orbit sander. I need to get one and see if it's nice and smooth like the Ridgid...hope it will be since it's cheaper...LOL.!

The p118 one hour charger is better on batteries and the charge will last longer. I believe Ryobi has a over night slow charger too. Which can rebalance the cells in your battery packs. Slow chargers are best for your batteries and your charge will last much longer and your batteries will live longer too. I also notice the p117 fast charger does Not seem to charge up the battery completely. Batteries never even get warm, which means it's not fully charging any battery to it's full charge state, and or full potential.
@TheAarowsmith7 жыл бұрын
Also I notice the p117 has glitches. Sometimes it will say your battery is defective but you reinsert it again and it will charge fine. Sometimes it will sit there and do nothing when you insert a battery, then you have to pull it out & wait, then insert it again to charge. I don't trust the p117 fast charger, it's super glitchey' sometimes.😬

I've had that issue with other brands of chargers too, if you don't get the battery seated properly the first time either. I can't remember if it's happened with the P118 as well though.

Doresoom Reviews , I clean my battery contacts and also the charger contacts I keep very clean. And I make sure the spring contact's are not tweaked or bent down, another words in their factory proper position. I never had any issues with all my p118 chargers. My batteries also get a little warm when fully charged on the p118. The p117 however does not get any battery warm when fully charged on it. Which means it is not doing it's job of fully charging your 18v batteries.

@@TheAarowsmith You make some assumptions, which led you to some errors. First, balancing takes place within the packs themselves. Open one up, and you'll see a row of 4 MOSFETs at the front under a heat sink, which are for balancing. -Second, the P118 is a "dumb" charger that maintains the "finish" charge current for as long as you leave the pack on it (which is -_-terrible-_- for packs that sit on the charger for days at a time),- [apparently, the P118 is also an "IntelliPort"] whereas the P117 and P135 6-port "smart" chargers ("IntelliPort" in Ryobi-speak) go into a charge maintenance mode, monitoring cell voltage and only charging intermittently if a drop is noticed. The only thing you've said that I can co-sign is that a lower current is better for your batteries in the long run, but even that is less important than how far you draw them down before charging them. A pack that's always fast-charged but never goes below 3V/cell will most assuredly last longer than a pack that's always drawn down to 2.5V/cell and then slow-charged. It would be preferable in both cases to charge to something less than the max charge, but as with discharging to 3V instead of 2.5V, you lose some battery "range". It's also bad to fully charge a li-ion pack and then leave it on a shelf for 2 weeks while you go on vacation, which is why they aren't fully charged when you buy them (the IATA nonsense came years later). The ideal float (storage) charge for li-ion cells is 40-60%, or between 3.18V and 3.52V. Hope that helps _someone._

I purchased two of the P117 chargers with the 9ah batteries when they were on sale during Black Friday, Both charged up the 9ah batteries ok then put new 4ah batteries in both chargers. Checked on them the next day and both new P117 chargers were dead. So two charges each and they were useless. I tried returning them to Home Depot but they didn't have any in stock. One thing you should consider "upgrading" to use fast chargers. It's putting extra wear on the battery. So normally it's better to think ahead a little and use the regular charger. An alternative to a fast charger could be a normal battery and regular charger so you have more chargers - batteries will last longer - not age as fast.
@DoresoomReviews7 жыл бұрын
You make an excellent point for battery longevity. It would be nice if manufacturers would include data about how much a fast charger reduces total charge cycles over a battery's lifespan, but I doubt they'll publish that info!
@HifiCentret7 жыл бұрын
Sure they won't. They want you to buy as many batteries as possible. On the other hand at the extremes you can end up in a situation where batteries from one company gets the reputation of not lasting very but in reality it's just because its users choose to always fast charge their batteries. I believe it's in the ballpark below 1½ hour it's rapidly increasing wear on cells and at 30 min it's significantly more than compared to 60 min etc. I'd wish manufacturers would include a slow gentle charge on their chargers - especially their fast chargers which would make them much more universal - slow for regular use and when not in a hurry. Fast if you got caught and need a charged pack fast. Or take some of the multiple chargers. Seems odd some of them only has the ability to charge one battery at a time - but fast. Why not have an option to charge all but at slower rate - over all same amount of time to charge them all - much gentler for the batteries. I have thought about trying to mod one of my Milwaukee standard chargers to charge even slower but because of the communication with the pack they're much more complicated than they could be if just a "simple" charger. It's not just charging but doing so on a different pin than tool draw and at the same time telling the battery it's charging which it would otherwise be unaware of if just fed directly to the batteries.

Yeah they only have the standard life cycle, the 4Ah I've seen had Samsung INR18650 20Q in them and the datasheet says 1A standard charge and 4A quick charge, capacity is at least 60% (1200mAh) after 250 cycles with standard charge rate, which means anything faster will just result into a quicker death lol
@fun_ghoul5 жыл бұрын
@@DoresoomReviews Cell manufacturers publish the info as a matter of course, and sometimes you can deduce what cells a pack has without actually _seeing_ them. I just bought four 9Ah packs, and opened one. The cells are not visible, but I at least confirmed there are fifteen 18650 cells (3P5S). Barring the possibility of using unbranded cells, this means -they logically must be either LG HG2 or Samsung 30Q cells.- EDIT: After more poking and prodding of the pack, I saw green wrappers which seems to indicate that they are, or at least could be, Sony/Murata VTC6 cells. The cell life data is on page 8 of this document, and it basically shows that the cells take a real shit-kicking if you draw them down to 2.5V/cell, as they did in the testing. I'd expect at least double the number of cycles if you only draw down to 3V/cell. FWIW, the 9Ah pack I opened up is down to 1 light on the indicator with 16.7V (or 3.34V/cell) remaining.

Ideally I’d like to see almost all lithium chargers not just tool battery chargers but like iPhones etc. allow you to select when you want slow charging (say overnight) and then when ya want to charge as quick as possible (when you’re working with ya tools etc. or need to top-up as much battery life as quickly as possible for your phone) and then a standard mode which it can default to so you either may or may not desperately need charge so it just defaults to a standard charge rate.
@KiwiPokerPlayer4 жыл бұрын
Not really. Ryobi uses 18650 batteries in their battery packs. These have become most common battery cells used for rechargeable applications world wide. They're found in everything from laptops to the Tesla model S and X. The problem only occurs when a battery becomes too hot while charging, and decent quality 18650's can comfortably handle being charged at 2 amps which is what the fast charger uses. Any increase in battery life would be negligible so if that's the only reason you're using a slower charger, all you're really doing is wasting your own time.

Charging batteries faster is usually not better. There is an ideal rate that depends on the chemistry to charge a battery and get the most energy into (and out of) it as well as getting the most life. The faster you charge the less capacity you will get and the less life you will see. So unless you are in a hurry, stay with the slower (ideal) charge rates when you can.

Yes, but unless Ryobi is pushing more current into the cells than is specified by the cell manufacturer, the life degradation is likely to be minimal. @DoresoomReviews6 жыл бұрын
If it lights up solid red, that means the charger doesn't think there's a battery on it. If it lights up slowly pulsing red, that means the charger thinks the battery is defective. Here's the full chart for interpreting the LEDs on page 5 of the manual: manuals.ryobitools.com/system/files/6548/original/P117_503_trilingual_09.pdf?2017

How can you tell when the battery is fulll charged with the black one
@DoresoomReviews7 жыл бұрын
You can't with just the battery. You'll either have to plug it into a tool that has a fuel gauge, or set it on the charger. It really sucks when you're using the P102 with a tool that doesn't have a fuel gauge though, since you'll have no idea how much charge is left.

The P118s are junk. The failure rate is so bad that Ryobi will replace them virtually without question. I had one that was shot within 3 days of initial use. P117 holds up way better than the QC is definitely better. That said, the P135 is the way to go if you're upgrading as it's only $30 more on average and will handle 6 batteries at a time.

How good is the Ryobi P1976N 18-Volt ONE+ 6-Port Dual Chemistry SUPERCHARGER ?
@DoresoomReviews5 жыл бұрын
I haven't used it myself, but from the specifications I believe it charges sequentially at the same rate the P117 green charger does. So if you need lots of batteries charged quickly it won't help much. But if you want to avoid waiting around a charger to swap out batteries it can help by automatically charging the next one after it finishes the first.

I don't know why they can't make them parallel chargers - it was a big miss when the redesigned the P125 to the P135 that they didn't make the move. It would be more expensive for the internal components, but the current draw would only have been 5-6 Amps on a normal 120V wall outlet, based off of the 85W draw of the P117 charger.

Unfortunaly fast equals heat!

True, but discharging them quickly when using with a high demand tool will generate way more heat than fast charging them. And the Ryobi P117 "fast" charger is actually more in line with most brands' regular chargers.

You need shelves for your paint. Otherwise I agree with your video. Ironically I began composing this message before finished watching the video and you ended up mentioning all the points I was going to make, even about lack of a fan in it! Except, the thing I would do is buy another Ryobi kit that includes the tool, 4Ah battery and basic charger, even if the new tool is just a duplicate of your most used tool... because... it's your most used tool. Do get a kit with a 4Ah battery though, not the 1.5A which are silly today for much more than their LED flashlight.

Ryobi's biggest market is the USA, so the shear volume of tools sold means lower costs for the consumer. Also, sometimes there are slight differences in the like-model Australian tool and the North American version. For example the 18 volt brushless chainsaw in N.A. has a 12 inch bar but no chain brake. The Australian model has a 10 inch bar but includes a chain brake.
