I've been in the Ryobi line for 20+ years, starting with the Ni-Cad Blue tools. All those old Ni-Cad tools work even better with the new Li-Ion batteries. All my old Ni-Cad batteries are long dead, but thanks to Ryobi keeping its promise to stay with the same battery stem design, my old tools are still in use today. I have over 40 newer Li-Ion batteries and many new tools, thanks to promotions of free batteries with a tool purchase. Run time is no longer an issue for me, but I thank Ryobi for making better batteries while making them backwards compatible with the tools I already own and love. Thanks Ryobi.

I inherited a bunch of tools from my neighbor who's husband passed away last year. Among them was an OG blue drill and circ saw. The NiCad batteries wouldn't take a charge in their original charger, but when I plugged them into my lithium charger, it actually charged them. I put one of the blue batteries on one of my green drills and you could just tell the difference in power. At least the drill and saw can use the lithium batteries.

Great vidio. Retired but back in the 1980's purchased my first cordless drill. Used a 9.6 volt battery. Even with two new batteries if I was doing & lot of drilling holes in metal then using a 1/4" gun tap along with Tap magic tapping fluid both batteries would be dead. Took over two hours to fully charge one. Finally had to purchase a third battery and a second charger. The 18 volt battery in my Ryobi drill is still at least 75% charge after not using it for over 6 months. Waiting for Christmas when they have great sales on Ryobi tools.Wanted to get a brushless driver and thier band saw.

I love Ryobi link cases, there is only one gripe about the cases. While they are heavy duty, however the lock tabs on the handles need to be built a bit more beefier, if you load them to or even close to the rated weight capacity those tabs will not last after picking them up numerous times. They just do not hold up and break or wear down to where it is ineffective and no longer locks in place.

As someone who uses almost only Ryobi, why not test them against the HP batteries? Using the HP tool without the HP battery, is leaving power off of the table. They claim it gives non HP tools 4 times some specs, but how does that compare to if a HP battery was in it. Would be nicer to see the last gen battery compared instead of 3 generations ago.
@TheCharleseye

Most reviewers aren't comparing them to the HPs. Ryobi won't let them. Just like they wouldn't let anyone compare the 8 and 12Ah to the previous 9Ah, even though it's the most obvious comparison to do. They don't want people to see that it's just an incremental upgrade that's not worth the extra money.

I have both too in Australia but have sold/given most of my ryobi stuff away, unfortunately here the price don't seem that high value considering a 5ah battery is only 15% cheaper than the m18 one and having seen teardowns on ryobi stuff I think they're priced too high (here). One large caveat is I haven't tried the one plus stuff which I would believe fixes my issue with the brands power output. All that remains is my two ryobi batteries and the underpowered lawn edger I have and the soldering station (best out of all the battery models available). If ryobi was cheaper I'd buy a lot more of the 18v tools but I'm finding just buying a corded ozito (one of our more budget tool brands) is much better value and performs fine for stuff I'm not willing to buy the Milwaukee version of. For lawn tools I use ego 56v.

Wow. I have a few Ryobi tools, because of price point and they are tools I use the least frequently and even have a pair of aftermarket batteries and charger. No complaints. My every day tools are Dewalt and I have a Makita drill and impact which are 10+ years old including the battery. I like the Makita drill better than the Dewalt drills for sure. In plug in tools I have a Ryobi job site table saw and Compound sliding 12" miter saw. both about 6-7 years old and have both been accurate and reliable after many thousands of cuts on the same aftermarket blades. My one BIG complaint about the Ryobi table saw is that the slot for the miter thingy is NOT standard, it will not allow for any aftermarket jig or even any home made jig possibilities. Anyway, I will be upgrading the table saw soon (finally) to a Dewalt and also the miter saw when it's time comes. I will be expanding my cordless collection soon starting with a power (chain) pole saw and was planning Dewalt because I'm most invested in the Dewalt battery platform but now heavily leaning towards Ryobi. P.S. I also have a Dewalt table top planer and recently got a Grizzly 4 foot long (I think) Jointer. On the jointer I regret not going full spiral head, they have a cheaper option which still uses spiral cutters but fewer of them. I think everyone is doing that now and it's ok but not as clean of a cut.

I’ve been sold on Ryobi for 20 years. Quality tools and they invented the one battery platform. That is not to say the other manufacturers aren’t good; their excellence (Milwaukee, DeWalt, Bosch, etc.); however Ryobi has excelled in is innovation. They come out with a product and the others then follow suit. For example, a few years back I saw a battery platform 1/2 inch file/sander that was being test marketed in Australia. No one in the US had anything like this except Milwaukee came out with a corded version about 6 months after Ryobi began test marketing. Milwaukee’s version was about $150+. Six months later, the Ryobi hit the US market for about $60.

My guess is a heated jacket is just around the corner as well. I do think there is a lot of confusion on batteries and it done on purpose. A 4Ah battery is a 4 Ahr batttery. In my opinion it does not have more battery juice inside it. What the higher performance batteries do is to allow more of that juice to flow; which was seen in the circular saw demonstration. So the big question is if it allows more power to flow out of the battery, how does it last longer? An example would be two buckets with the same capacity filled with water. Then drill a 1/2" hole in one and a 1" hole in the other. How can the one with the 1" hole flow more water and yet last longer.

I thought they were going stemless but just a incremental increase. The heated cushion almost had me when it first came out but the usb battery platform was a non starter. If they made it 18v battery it would last 3x as long and not be stressed with high power draw. The extra 2 inches on a pocket on the side dosent matter compared to 5hours on low! Once they fix that I'll be sold out instantly.

I'm missing something. If it puts out more power (that's amps, since the voltage is set), would it not last as long? If a battery is rated at 4Ah, then at one amp, it'd last four hours. At 2 amps, it'd last two hours, etc. If the new battery gives more power (amps) and still lasts the same time, then it's more than a 4Ah battery. If the extra power means it wont last 4 hours, then OK...but the extra oompfh has to come from somewhere. Happy that it gives the tools more, but where does it come from, ya know?

How do the new batteries work on the 18v brushless weed trimmer? I use the expand it trimmer head from my old gas powered trimmer. It tends to heat the battery up pretty quick. The edger doesn't seem use up the batteries as quickly as the trimmer. I will certainly buy a couple of these new batteries. The lithium 4ah are so much better than the old nickel cadmium and now these are reportedly better. Certainly worth a try!

I really wish that they would've had this system universally as I commend them for keeping it that way in other parts of the world. However it's frustrating that In Southern Africa, our Ryobi products are very different and uses a completely different battery system. It also makes it difficult to look up reviews online as there are hardly any specific ones for the tools on our shop shelves. Two of my drills even use different battery systems that's incompatible with each other.

I am a tile settee. Use Ryobi with no shame. My tools get wrecked in less than a week so I stopped over spending on red yellow and blue. Im waiting on a 40v sliding miter 10 inch saw. I have aroind 25 tools and the packout system with 5 pieces. I cant wait for h.d. to carry these batteries. Also I need the speaker as my ryobi radio no longer works in bt.

Went to HD to look at the boxes and the wall racks, but i like to carry the boxes with the handle and set them on the floor and they didnt design these boxes to stand up straight. I also found that the clip in design didnt really work all the time. Ill have to keep looking. Thank you for the video

Ryobi isn’t a brand to sneer at like when they first came out. They are definitely upping their game! Editor Chris looks kinda weird… Is he related to the werewolf of London?!?! 😂 I’m teasing….. Or am I?

Ryobi 18v Lithium batteries even work in their old NiCd tools - they just kept the same battery format for 30 odd years, unlike several 'premium' brands which change their battery format every couple of years - strangely, just about the time that a trade professional might need new batteries - then you just can't find replacement batteries. Hopefully those are standard 18650 cells in there.

I wonder if they are using a phase change material around the cells? Flex did that and it did work on their batteries. Well until that stuff start leaking out. Which has been a big issue with them.

Hey Matt, don't know if you're aware, but the two Woodcraft stores in Houston -- including the one you've visited a couple of times -- are closing. Very disappointing. From what I'm reading, Woodcraft's other stores around Texas will remain open, but Rockler is now the only game in H-town.

Any thoughts about testing the new 4AH battery shown here against Ryobi's older 6AH batteries?
@josephslomka8161
@josephslomka8161 2 ай бұрын
Why would that happen? Larger batteries perform better than smaller ones on tools. All it would show is that the new $140 4ah battery is only slightly better then than old $140 6ah battery. Royobi is making a lot of claims that are not going to be true, 4x more run time on the same Ah rating? That would be easily proven in this video but there is NO WAY Royobi is going to keep sending free tools to this channel if they test and show how insane that claim is. He just repeats it as fact and moves on at the 1:15 mark. I'd really like to see how many linear feet of board the new 4ah battery can rip on a saw vs the old 4ah one.

Let every one know that any performance will only be obtained with brushless tools. These batteries need to "talk" to the tool. I have quite an collection of Ryobi tools and only one brushless drill and one brushless impact driver. Most of us can't afford to replace our tools to take advantage of these batteries. If you don't have brushless tools don't waste your money. A 4 amp/hr battery is 4 amp/hr battery in a brushed tool no matter how fancy the package is. Although they put lower "discharge rate cells in the standard battery for lower demand usage, so the midrange battery does have a benefit.

Other tests I've seen don't show much difference between Edge and previous HP batteries, just the non-HP. Not even charging time or efficiency. The heating pad I'd love to see people try normal USB-C power banks. If it is just 4v/8v switching, many PD power banks deliver 5v and 9v as well as 12v (people use them with the Milwaukee M12 heated jackets for example). I like the new radio, just hope it drops to $149 or something for the holidays.

Looks like with the release of Milwaukee Forge batteries, TTI is probably shifting the battery tech downwards since it would be getting less expensive to make as the technology gets older. While Milwaukee makes great tools I've got to say Ryobi seems to have a broader selection of tools.
