@@UnboxWarehouse The water would have worked for you if it had tubes running thru it. So the cold air being drawn out of the tubes (metal is best) has been cooled down by the water that surrounds it. I made one of these about seven years ago and with tubes ran thru iced down cold water it worked much better.

Yall complaining that that water is warmer but the biggest reason is cause the air was traveling through the spaces in between the ice which is why it cooled down to begin with. By adding water you not only increased the temp in the cooler but decreased the surface area of the ice meaning it can't cool air as effectively

When you add water, the air no longer has direct contact with the ice, and there's alot less surface area for the air to exchange heat with, so the cooling becomes less effective

We were tent camping in florida in july and the first night in the tent it didnt cool off enough to sleep until about 5:00 am and that was with a big box fan and soaking my hair, clothes, and sheets with ice water from the cooler. Then at about 7:00 am when the sun hit the top of the tent it was instantly like an oven again. I had to sleep the second night because i had an 18 hr drive the next day and i knew how water coolers worked so i was trying to figure out what i could do to make a mini water cooler. I googled it and saw where people were using 5 gal buckets and filling them with ice then putting a fan in the lid and drilling holes for pvc pipes to come out the sides. Perfect except i had no power tools! All i had was my pocket knife. This was yrs ago before making these things was super popular and there were tons of youtube videos about it by the way. The only videos were with the buckets. I went and got a small $2 styrofoam icechest, 2-2" pvc elbows, a small 10" box fan, and some duct tape! I cut the lid and taped the fan in place and cut holes for the elbows at the other end and filled it with a 10lb bag of ice and stuck it in the tent. I slept 9 hrs like a baby! Cost me less than $20 and the biggest chunk of that was the small fan because i didnt already have one. I call it my redneck tent A/C! I just cant see paying $200 for these fancy coolers when you can make your own for 1/10th of that price! Edit: I forgot to mention that im a girl! 😂

Not sure why you would have thought that it would become COOLER by adding water. Water is warmer than ice......because it's melted......lol. Anyway, I was actually pretty impressed with it. You said it yourself, that it was an extreme test. It was well over 100 degrees outside......you ran it for about ten minutes out there, then, you ran it for about 15 or 20 minutes inside a 145 degree car, and it actually COOLED it off!! The only thing that was a fail, was you adding water. If you filled that cooler all the way up with ice, and let's say, had it in an RV or room in a house, that was about 85-90 degrees inside, I'm willing to bet that it would cool the whole room off quite nicely. If you ran it at night in an RV or house, it would probably cool the room, or RV to a comfortable level pretty much all night long. I'll bet you could get the ice to last even longer inside by adding a thin reflective layer of insulation around the inside of the cooler. I don't know.......I don't think the cooler is gimmicky, or a fail....people make these kinds of things for tailgating etc, and most of those only last about ten minutes before they're blowing warm air. Seems like a pretty decent product actually. I was absolutely amazed it was actually able to cool the car off by almost 50 degrees, on a super hot day sitting directly in the sun......pretty awesome actually!

When I saw him do that I asked myself, "Did Ryobi say you should add a gallon of water?" If so then perhaps they should rethink their instructions. They shouldn't tell people to add water unless there's also room for tubing to be added. So imagine my shock when he gave the unit a bad review because of it! It seemed to be working fine before he added the water. It's the kind of criticism I hate to give because overall it was a great video.

My friend that is simple physics. The water is a better heat conductor than air, for that reason when you put water with ice in a cooler the cans become cooler faster, but a the same time the ice melt sooner. On the other hand for that fan to supply some cool air it need space for the air flow between the ice, 1. The water blocked that space and 2. the water is "hot" so you loose your ice thermal storage

To replace an air conditioner with a capacity of 5000 BTUs, it is necessary to melt 36lb of ice per hour. Your car Air Conditioning is about 5 Tons (60,000 BTU) at highway speeds. It is about 30,000 BTU if you drive in City. So, if you on the highway, be ready to spent 432lb of ice each hour and 216lb of ice if you drive in City. But it will work well in the small tent :)

Yes it was warm but I let it sit for 20 min in the ice. Plenty of time to cool it down. I think the problem is that this cooler does not use a radiator style cooling system. It just draws air from around the ice.

I agree, when u dumped the hot water in you probably melted most of the ice. I would have gotten a reading inside the cooler with just ice and when you added the water, this would also tell u how effective it actually is. If it was 50 degrees inside the chest and the air at the vent is 70, then it’s a design flaw. But thanks didn’t even know ryobi had this and I own many of their tools

Well, you will get warmer air from water than ice. Ice is below freezing (ie. a solid) and water is above freezing (a liquid) so you will expect to get warmer temps when you add water versus ice. Not sure why a mixture results in even higher temps but the ice vs water temps is normal. I mean try putting a can of soda in a cooler with ice and then in another with just water. The ice cooler will likely be colder.

Desert coolers are intended to be used where people live, not inside cars. When used indoors, even tap warm water can cool things down, eventually.

+Michael Ybarra because i have a cooler for my airplane that uses a pump to push water through a radiator in the lid and it works better with water. Also if you put ice and water in a cooler the drinks will get colder. Thats why.
@TimGravesRV
@TimGravesRV 5 жыл бұрын
@@UnboxWarehousePutting water in the cooler doesn't make anything cooler. In fact, barring some cooling from somewhere else, water, because it's warmer than ice, is going to make things warmer. The reason drinks will be colder with water in the cooler along with the ice is because water is a better insulator than air. Thus it'll hold temperature better/longer and keep drinks cooler longer. However, when you're trying specifically to cool air, you need maximum movement of that air through the ice. Putting the water in there means that you're just getting whatever air is above the water line, not air that's settled down into the ice. However, anything actually intended for cooling air is going to use a heat exchanger of some sort, where you want liquid movement, which is why your airplane cooler works better. The Ryobi cooler thing is just a cooler that also happens to have a fan built into it. So your ice isn't going to last as long because of the hole in the insulation needed to pipe air out to blow on you, and the air is only going to cool for so long once the ice starts melting and water fills the spaces between the ice where the air was previously moving through getting at least marginally cooled. Once the water rises above the ice line, the only place to pull air from is above the ice. And we all know heat rises.

Should have put salt on ice in lieu of water. It drops freezing point

You can make one of these for way less than $ 200. Lots of KZbin videos about em.

Good info, but hate chasing the volume levels because people dont normalize their levels during editing. Maybe they didnt do enough education to know how to do that, or think its important. Blowing peoples speakers. Music and dialog should be level at least, but music should always be lower than dialog. Per and editor.

One, I did not know Ryobi made this!! I am thinking it would work well in I my micro camper at night to help sleep on the hotter summer nights - I have the Ryobi tools with a couple big batteries. How long does one bat last, how long does ice not completely melt. - - still might go with a FrankenCooler BlowBox. Cheers

Depends on the battery. 1.5 ah battery about 4 hours, 2.0 ah bat 4-6 hrs and the 4.0 ah bat around 12hrs.

Water is not cold as ice . You should’ve put rock salt, that will be -25 F bro. Simple Chemistry. Water is not going to cool you more than frozen water.
