One minor critique I forgot to mention in the video - the battery mounts so the fuel gauge is upside down, and you have to turn the whole saw over to check how much charge you have left. I think the design reason is it's more secure to have the battery stem connect at the top, but it's still a bit annoying.

Awesome review! I can see this being useful for camping. It won’t take up the space of a full size gas chainsaw, no gas or fumes to deal with and good for cutting up firewood.

Great review. No nonsense, meat and potatoes, just the facts and very fair. I was surprised at the chainsaws ability to cut through significant size wood with no noticeable lag! Great job, I'm picking up one of these. Even though they are a bit more expensive here in Canada I think this tool will be well worth it, and not just around the house, I will be taking it off roading, camping and quadding as well to clear obstructions and cut firewood. I have the earlier version of this saw and the 40V Brushless. In the brief amount of real time speed that you showed, it appeared as though the new 18v had pretty close to the 40V speed. Nice. I have heavily used the 40V and I love it. The chain speed and length on the older 18v almost made it worthless.

Thanks for the info on the older 18V and 40V brushless - I didn't have either to compare performance to, only specs. I didn't feel like I was waiting around on the saw to finish cuts at all, and it made pretty quick work with just the weight of the saw pulling it through. I probably should have put a little more real time footage in there - sometimes it's hard to find a good balance with video length.

I had the older saw that you mentioned, it still will run but I will give it away. I have the 12" brush less chainsaw now for a little while and it does great. I am going to upgrade it to a 14" blade and chain. I think that it will handle it. I thought it was leaking oil but it just put out too much and would leak off the bar for a little while, so I let it sit for awhile and then put it away.

It looks like Ryobi made big improvements with the 12 inch. I have the old model in 10 inch that I bought many years ago, and it is anemic at best. It's been collecting dust for many years. However, the Ryobi 14 inch, 40 volt chainsaw is good, and it's almost as powerful as my gas chainsaw, and it's now my go-to chainsaw for light cutting and branch trimming.

@Deon Denis I haven't used mine in years. Power is weak and leaks oil more than other chainsaws, but my Ryobi 40 volt brushless chainsaw is almost as good as my 16 inch Echo gas powered. Good luck. Stay safe and healthy.

I did some more investigating, and do you perhaps have the 10" Brushless version OCS1825BL that isn't available in North America? (I noticed you used "petrol" instead of "gas"). The manual for that one talks quite a bit about a chain brake and its operation, but the P509 manual only mentions it in passing once for using OEM replacement parts.

Thanks for the extra info, and for the video. I'm pretty sure the difference is the North American version doesn't have a chain brake, while all other overseas versions do. This conclusion is supported both from me trying more to engage it on my P549 without any success, and from the differences in the manuals.

I just use a Milwaukee 18v sazall with a 9.0 battery and a tree pruning blade. It’s much lighter and lasts a lot longer than the ryobi chainsaw.

Might be different where you are, but this chainsaw goes for A$160 over here, the best price I've seen for Milwaukee is A$650 (those prices are body only, no battery), Milwaukee battieries are also more than double the cost of Ryobi, so for something that's only used on occasion for clearing a fallen tree in your yard, or on a track when off-roading I'd rather not fork out the same money as a full size 2-stroke model.

No, not nearly that much. The oil tank capacity is 6.8oz. Just buy a 1 quart bottle of bar and chain oil, it will last a while unless you're using the saw pretty heavily.

Bought one yesterday cut a couple of very large broken Oak tree limbs that broke off with heavy snow I must have made 100 cuts from 2" to just under 12" with a regular 4 amp battery unbelievable how well it cut no it's no a heavy duty chain saw for working a fireline it's a home owner chain saw for people that have a few acres of land that need to clear some brush or cut some firewood I think with 2 6 amp batteries I'd be good all day at the pace I would be working at.

What about a ‘homeowner comparison between the 18v or 40v chain saw. I have all my yard tools in 40 and my tools in 18. Should I continue with this division, or is it worth trying to make it all 18?

I don't have any of the 40V tools, sorry. If you've got batteries in both 18V and 40V, I'd keep buying 40V for OPE and 18V for regular tools. Otherwise I'd recommend sticking with 18V, especially now that the new 9Ah HP battery is available.

Can you post a link for the P548? I can't seem to find it online. The P547 is the older 10" bar 18V chainsaw Ryobi makes. Besides the shorter bar, it has a less powerful and less efficient brushed motor vs the P549. So the runtime per charge will be less, and it will have less power. Also, the P547 doesn't have an automatic chain oiler, so you'll have to stop every few cuts and pump oil onto the chain.

I don't see a difference other than the P548 doesn't come with a battery or charger. I think when they originally released the P549 it was only as a one-battery kit. Maybe I should go check and make sure my saw doesn't say P548 on it - Ryobi does some weird things with kit product numbers vs tool product numbers sometimes.

He said the differences are completely cosmetic, although I cant see any differences. A couple weeks ago the 548 was $169 with battery and charger. Now it is $169 for tool only. The 549 was $169.00 for tool only and is now $212 with battery and charger (no tool only option). I bought a factory blemished 549 with battery & charger for $149 at the outlet store Monday, last day of their July 4 sale. It leaks a little bit of oil onto whatever surface you leave it on, but I don't think it will empty the tank. Seems like it's just residual left over on the bar/chain. It may just be the nature of chainsaws - every other chainsaw I've dealt with has left a little oil behind after sitting for a while.

Wow... it is love at first sight when I saw that tool... cordless and brushless... but oh my.. that price. I envy those who can afford such luxury... all I can do is dream. For cordless tools, it is best to have at least two spare batteries at the ready while one is in use... and then, the overall cost just shoots up.

Two of mine, died within warranty in Australia. I had the ten inch version. I looked after them very well in every way and never cut more than six inch in thickness. The ten inch saw in Australia has now been discontinued, so I wonder why?

For $160, and I already have 2 P108's, this would make a great saw for a homeowner that had pruning jobs which exceed the capacity of their already excellent sawzall. The chain speed seems to be fast enough. If you have neighbors that let weed trees grow against the wall, you can probably hop the wall, cut the freakin trees down, dope the stumps with triclopyr, and they won't even know!

Do yourselves a favor and get the 9.0ah battery. Longer run time and more pep and zip whilst using any device the battery is installed in. Always try to buy brushless tools as they are almost no friction internally and therefore use less battery power than brushed motors.

I usually like your reviews but this one not so much. I realize that Ryobi is supplying you with free tools, but to say that it costs a little more than the old version is not true as it's almost twice as much. Also, it's not a "hassle" to supply a small bottle of bar oil, it's a way of saving 25¢ off each saw sold. There's nothing worse than getting a new tool home to start a project only to find you have to run back to the store for more things to get it to work. Running the video at 64 times normal speed does not give us any idea of how the saw actually performs. No thumbs down, but you really could have done better.

Since I do receive a good number of the tools I review direct from manufacturers, keeping myself honest is always in the forefront of my mind when I'm doing a review. I always do my best to evaluate if I'd be happy with the performance if I'd bought the tool myself. You're right on the price comparison of the older model - I think I grabbed the price on the $130 1.5Ah one battery kit for the 10" version thinking that was the bare tool cost and missed that it's $90 bare tool, which was a big mistake on my part. As for the timelapse, I sped the footage up trying to show how much could be done on one battery, but probably should have included more real-time footage as well to show performance. Thanks for the real-time footage. This saw looks like it works much better than the old 18V Ryobi chainsaws. I'm just having a hard time with the huge price increase. I've been wanting the 18V X 2 Makita for years. It is a really, really good saw but the price is what has been holding me back. Plus I don't want to get into yet another battery platform, I'm already into almost a dozen and it's just too expensive. That's why I've been downgrading to Ryobi, because the One+ batteries fit almost all of their tools.

6Ah knockoff batteries are $25 bucks on ebay. The source I get them from is out at Twentynine palms marine base. I've had 100% success with them and this outfit has guarantee. I've gotten the ryobi and Makita 18v batteries. Performance is good. However the electronics inside are not as Gucci as oem but half the price similar performance I don't care.

Good 'advertisement here for Ryobi, but, there's no mention here, re bar/chain oil leaking,... just about ALL chain saws that use bar oil will leak it out during non-use times such as when stored and being transported. Please Note: This model may or may not leak some oil, but be aware that you have a tool here with some sticky bar chain oil in it and it's not a nice thing to try to clean out of a carpet. Think of this when you lay your saw in and on the carpeted floor of your car's trunk. Lay your saw on an oil proof sheet of some kind. Don't say I didn't warn ya! :) P.S. Yes, I do own a Ryobi saw similar to this model, and yes, it works great for limbing and small wood cutting jobs.

I do think it's still a great buy - I got plenty of use out of mine. I had an EGO 56V before I tested this Ryobi. The Ryobi 18V is much smaller, lighter, and lower cost, which made it great for smaller jobs. Unless I had something big to cut, I'd usually grab the Ryobi first. I did eventually switched to the Milwaukee M12 chainsaw for small jobs and got rid of the Ryobi, since I just didn't have room to store them all.

It is surprising though that this bare tool sells for 200 shipped on ebay while the bare tool chainsaw from makita sells for the same or less as low as 160 bare tool. The makita is a 36v (2 18V BATS) that is brushless and more powerfull.

I think the price discrepancy for this saw over MSRP on eBay is due to low supply when this saw initially debuted. Although the newer Ryobi brushless tools don't seem have as big of a price difference as usual from other brands, which is probably due to the increased cost of the motor and control boards. If someone's got batteries in both the Makita and Ryobi line, it would be tempting to go with the Makita for the same price. However, starting from scratch with no batteries, it's a MUCH bigger investment for the Makita - especially if you want some spares so you don't have to wait around for them to charge.

I'm not sure it will perform as well with the compact batteries. The P108 has two rows of cells that the tool can draw current from simultaneously, which allows it to deliver more power to the cut. I haven't tried it with a compact battery for that reason - if I do I'll give you an update on how it does.

It would do it, but it's asking a lot from a little saw. I've cut up a fallen tree 12" - 14" with the older version...but it took a while & several batteries. I mostly use it for pruning (we have 30'+ fir trees so the branches can be 3-4" or so) & it makes quick work of that. I would say it's best suited to multiple quicker cuts instead of prolonged cutting. I literally just took this back tonight because it is still significantly under powered for a battery powered tool. It shouldn't be used for cutting anything more than 2" in diameter. Pushing on it bogs it down. Also I'm just a homeowner who is a Ryobi fan and have several of their 18 and 12v tools. Maybe the 40v is better? I would not recommend this saw to anyone. Amazon has a 40.00 Remington corded chainsaw that puts this thing to shame.

Sorry but I don't have any issues with my 12" saw. Brush less chainsaws have a better chain speed and I have used mine a lot.

I've only had 2 Ryobi batteries fail on me in the span of 4 years, and those were both the compact 2Ah ones. All of my dozen or so 3Ah, 4Ah, 6Ah and 9Ah haven't given me any problems. Plus, I was able to revive both 2Ah batteries: instagram.com/p/BznpSThAOkO/

Also recently found out that recharging before completely dead is better for long-term life of the batteries. Not mentioned as incredible markup on them

I have had the 18 volt batteries for about 10 years, only recently one did die.

WARNING! The bar tightener has a design flaw and will not adequately tighten the chain after just a couple of hours use. Ryobi say they have not replacement for this flaw. I have gone through three chains this winter alone. During my last use the chain came off the bar while operating - VERY DANGEROUS. See toolsinaction and productreview sites for similar opinions.

Have you ever considered that not everyone uses tools the same way you do? Ryobi is great for homeowners and DIYers on a budget. Sure, if you're making a living with your tools you probably want DeWalt, Makita, or Milwaukee for tools you use daily. But what about tools you use once a week or less? Other major tool brands don't even make a lot of the tools that Ryobi has in their 18V lineup. How about cordless glue guns or bench blowers? For the longest time, Ryobi was the only brand with a cordless inflator too.
