Ryobi introduced their newest P508 circular saw with a brushless motor and full sized 7-1/4" blade. Lightweight at just 6 pounds, with a decent amount of power and run time. The 3800 RPM no load speed is a little slower than most, and the electronic blade brake stops the blade in just a second or two.

Gotta say When our buddy first brought one of these on the job site, we laughed at him Does it have the power, the durability or the prowice of an expensiver tool? Well no....but....we’ve been using it for 2 years..and it’s lightweight and cordlessness...just makes it hella convenient If you are a home gamer and have a shop, or want to do some light duty work, I’ll have to say I’m surprised that it’s lasted this long after all the abuse we put it through Any tool you get “beats using your teeth” You just gotta be honest with yourself You making a project in your garage...or are you building an entire Neigborhood? most people want overkill tools...but...be honest with yourself...no reason to spend money you don’t need to, cause....this saw, even though it’s slow and a little weak....it’s worth the money for light use

I finally figured out an excuse to buy one of these and I am impressed. It’s powerful, lightweight, inexpensive and has the blade on the correct side. Considering what it is, I don’t think the plastic guard and steel shoe are drawbacks. They help make it light and cheap without seriously compromising its capabilities. This is the kind of saw that can get the job done, but you don’t really have to worry too much about it disappearing.

Good video pal, thanks. Looks like a really nice saw actually. I have the HITACHI C18DBAL brushless 18V, it's a 6 1/2inch saw, but it has deep depth of cut at 67mm! Really don't want a 7 1/4inch when this achieves even slightly more than a lot of 7 1/4inchers! It has the motor on the left and blade on the right. Just in process of making some cutting and trim jigs for it.

I have the 5.5 inch one and really love it, but I think the cut max is 1.7" So, for some 2x4/6/whatever I can't cut all the way through especially if it is bowed or thick. Overall awesome tool and it has a full aluminum guard other than the bottom is clear plastic.

The two additional contacts are for the tool communicating with the battery. When the tool is under heavy load the battery sends more power to the tool.

I have had the earlier 5.5 inch brushed saw for awhile and it is pathetic, so I hesitantly bought this new 71/4 one in right handed version ,for the Australian market . I am very impressed with the performance even in long rip cuts ,very powerful and well balanced, then I put in the new 6amp hp battery and it boosted it even more ,I use it professionally at work .👍👍👍👍👍

Also, I thought I would add a comment on the blade lock. I am a female and not very strong. When I was trying to install the blade I had the saw in my lap and was trying to push the lock mechanism. No dice. So I put it on the floor and that gave me enough leverage to do the job. I thought it would have been a little easier to do but maybe with time it will get better.

I got the drill, the impact driver, the jigsaw, and the circular saw, PLUS 4 batteries (1 of the 2 ah, 1 of 3 ah, and 2 of the 4 ah), for a mere $256. Absolutely amazing deal from Ryobi. For my purposes, these tools are more than adequate. I can't believe the value, honestly. All are brushless. The jigsaw works great. I actually haven't even used the circular saw yet.

I went with the 4 tools I thought I'd use the most given the types of projects I usually do (building / fixing decks, docks, etc.) I don't do a lot of "fine" carpentry, so I didn't go with a router or sander. In addition to the base of the two drills (drill and impact driver, actually), I went with the jigsaw and the circular saw, and extra batteries. (The batteries are expensive, and you always need more batteries.)

If they're the old P108 4Ah batteries, they last longer but won't perform as well as the 3Ah HP battery in the circular saw. @@mtalamantes100994 I have no complaints. I ripped 3 sheets of 1/2" plywood into (9) total pieces. One battery did it no problem. Six cuts 4ft long. Cut some 2x4's as well too after I was done. I would buy it again.

Just a note, the compact style batteries (like the P102 and P107) will run the saw, but won't put out as much power. I could feel a difference in performance when using the P108 vs the P102.

The P107 has five 3.6V cells with an energy storage capacity of 1.5Ah each, while The P102 has five cells with a 1.3Ah capacity. The main difference between those two is a little bit more runtime offered by the P107. On the other hand, the P108 has ten cells with 2.0Ah of capacity each, which equates to 4Ah total for the 18V battery. The reason the P108 can output more power (not to be confused with runtime) is because it can draw current from both sets of 5 cells simultaneously. For a power tool, current draw is directly related to power. The P107 may be able to output a little more power than the P102 if the cells are a better quality with a higher max discharge rate, but where you'll really see the difference is moving to the P108 which has twice the cells.

i have a black and decker 3 amp jig saw and it took me 5 mins to cut threw a 3x8 and i had to keep stoping cause it was so hard for it to cut threw the wood, in 10 mins in your saw cut threw that 2x4 like butter.

A jigsaw doesn't clear chips as well, and doesn't have the blade speed a circular saw does, so that's expected. I pretty much only use my jigsaw for curved cuts or inside corner cuts that a circular saw can't do. Also, this Ryobi brushless saw gets a HUGE power boost from their One+ 18V HP batteries. I was just using a P108 in this video, so the saw is capable of even faster cuts than shown here.

Yeah, at the time I made this review the new HP batteries weren't out yet to confirm. I'm betting the voltage on that second set of pins varies when you place the tool and battery under load in order to balance run time vs current draw for high demand applications.

Great review. I probably won’t buy one, as I already have three cordless circular saws, but for some reason I really do like Ryobi tools. What I’d really like to see them do is build a line of compact tools like Milwaukee’s M12 line. I suspect that Ryobi’s cheap, lightweight build style would really lend itself to compact tools. Milwaukee makes good tools, but they sure ain’t light.

The weight of certain Ryobi tools is almost as big an advantage as their price IMO. Their recip saw for example is more than 3 lbs lighter than most of the competition. I think their 6.5” circular saw is actually lighter than Milwaukee’s 5 3/8” M12 saw too.

I haven't used any of DeWalt's cordless circular saws, but I'd say compared to my point of reference of an M18 FUEL saw it's going to feel a little underpowered. The newer HP batteries help a ton with the power on this saw though, and will make the difference a lot less noticeable. I can't use it for a tracksaw I guess. I was ok making a custom dustport but it the blade comming out of square ruins what would have been perfectly adequate for my application and the new large capacity batteries may kick up the power if they chat with the motor. I need better performance regarding accuracy in a circ saw.

I've ripped 2x material multiple times with this saw on a 4Ah battery, it should have no problem with plywood. If you're doing a lot of cutting, this is going to be way better than the 5-1/4" saw.

Are you using a slim pack battery with it? I'd recommend a 3Ah HP battery at minimum for this saw. If one of those overheats with one cut, there's something wrong.

Nope, they're not on the charger either. The charger does interface with the batteries with a single contact at the base of the post on the old batteries. You can cut from the opposite direction so it shouldn’t really matter which side is wider.

If you're cross cutting, you generally hold the saw with your dominant hand and hold the workpiece with your non-dominant hand, and let the offcut just drop. If you cut from the opposite side, now you're holding the offcut instead of the workpiece.

Good video but you really need to do something about that sound or the area you're using for making your video, otherwise perfect. Been using mine for about a year now without any problems. I would verify that when you set it up for shallower cuts it's' off by about 5/1000 of an inch but since all my projects call for using a jointed it's easily corrected. It did take a little bit to get used to the blade on the opposite side and I had to set up one of my jigs differently but all in all despite the added cost I'm happy and would recommend it.

I haven't used the Kobalt saw, sorry. Between Ryobi and Kobalt, Kobalt seems slightly higher quality to me, but Ryobi has a much broader 18V platform. I'd pick Ryobi, especially since Kobalt has switched battery voltages a few times on their customers.

I haven't used any battery adapters with this saw, so I can't speak from direct experience. Ryobi's 6Ah abd 9Ah batteries really give this saw some more oomph and runtime though. Bought one of these today and returned it immediately. Brand new out of the box, not even a refurbished one, and the arbor lock does not all the way so it was impossible to put a new saw blade in. Injured my finger attempting to replace the blade when the arbor lock slipped after multiple attempts. The one I got had zero quality control, they literally slapped it together at the slave labor camp and called it a day.

Are you sure you had the actual spindle lock spot and weren't feeling the brushless motor indexing like I explain around 9:05? It was a little tricky to find on mine, but it was there. Otherwise, I agree - I'd be taking it back to the store if I had the same problem.

Thanks for the reply. I did find the arbor detent/gap slot, but it would slip out after a certain amount of torque no matter how hard the arbor lock button was pushed down. First time I've experienced this kind of problem with a circular saw. Even tried crescent wrench and an impact wrench with an allen bit. I'll probably try my luck with the Ridgid brushless gen5x one next.

Without the spindle lock it will be very hard to remove the blade. The brushless motor indexes, which makes it a little tricky to find the detent in the shaft - you just need to keep rotating until the button depresses all the way.

That works well for sheet goods. I'm right handed though, so for cross cuts I'd either have to use my left hand to hold the saw, or cross my arms to hold the main portion of the work piece.

I like it because it was free from brushless drills combo I bought. It is nowhere near though from Dewalt counter part ergonomics, materials and features wise. I noticed that most brushless Ryobi are coming up lack some good features like the P239 Impact. Maybe it is Marketing ploy I suspect. Entice people to buy for the brushless feature then come up later with another batch of models with brushless full with good featuress.

The P239 came out after the P238, which is their full-featured brushless impact. I think it was an attempt to offer a lower cost base model brushless impact, since the drill/impact two battery kit that includes the P239 goes for $150 rather than the $99 of the P238 bare tool.

I've been on the Ryobi One+ 18V platform for about 5 years. I have over a dozen batteries and only had two fail. Both were 2Ah slim packs that wouldn't charge. I fixed both of them by taking them apart and charging the cells individually.

This is usually sold bare tool, which means it doesn't come with a battery or a charger. All Ryobi 18V One+ batteries will work with all their 18V One+ tools.

One ofy our gripes about a left blade saw was the heavy part being on the waste edge, but then you show plenty of cuts where you simply cut the other direction where the lighter part is on the wasted edge?

Cutting plywood or ripping you can usually manage to cut with the lighter part on the waste edge if you plan it out. But when cross cutting dimensional lumber the heavy side is always gonna be on the waste edge if you're right handed and want to hold the rest of the workpiece with your left hand.

I personally like the Ridgid better. They're pretty comparable tools as far as performance goes, but the Ridgid just feels a bit more polished.

thanks for the reply. I'm about to start my first cordless tool collection and am trying to decide between Ryobi and Ridgid. Last week HD was having some deals on both models. I picked up the Ridgid LImited Edition 4 piece brushless set w/ 2-4.0ah batteries for $299. Also grabbed the same exact brushless tools from Ryobi w/1-4.0ah battery for $270. Having trouble deciding which route to go. Ryobi tools going forward will be a lower cost. Plus all the brushless tool coming out have that extra set of contacts they you mentioned in this video which my give them a performance advantage over similar Ridgid models. Ridgid does have the great LSA. And like you mentioned the tools in general seem a little more polished. Do you have any further info on what the extra contacts do? Any advice on which brand to go with ?

I haven't seen anything else about the extra contacts on the new Ryobi brushless tools. My advice between Ridgid/Ryobi is to look at what tools you think you'll want down the line. If it's just the standard drill/impact/circular saw/recip saw, etc. then I'd go with Ridgid. However, Ryobi is much more of an innovator and crank out a ton of new products all the time. Their One+ line is a lot bigger than Ridgid's is, and they have random tools that are very useful for homeowners like the drain auger and hot glue gun, as well as lawn care equipment that Ridgid doesn't offer. Personally if I had to pick between just those two it would be Ryobi, since they offer way more options and seem to be getting into higher quality/performance tools lately with all the brushless releases.

Turns out my hypothesis on the extra Ryobi electrical contacts was correct. The 6Ah P164 batteries showed up on HD's website for a short while, and had the description: "Communicates directly with Ryobi Brushless tools to deliver the optimal level of power for the best performance."

"optimal level of power" is worded so vague it could mean anything. Would be interesting if you got your hands on a 6ah battery down the line to compare some tools with it and with the 4ah battery. After all the back and forth between Ryobi brushless tools and Ridgids I ended up going with Milwaukee m12 Fuel tools, reallying liking them so far. Love the smaller size and lightweight.

Yes, any Ryobi One+ 18V battery will work with this saw. A compact style one may overheat with heavy use though. I recommend at least a 3Ah HP battery, but the 6Ah and 9Ah will work best.

I'd check to make sure the spindle lock is fully engaged. It's a little deceptive because the brushless motor has very strong resistance and it can feel like it's the spindle lock that's engaged when it's really the motor magnets resisting. If that's not the issue, it's possible you've got a defective spindle lock.

Great Review, Will give you a BIG TIP, I think you will Like it. when you cut 2x4 or even 2x6< try using a Speed Square. Just hook it to the face of your 2x and now you have a stight fence to put the saws shoe aginest & match the blade to your marked to cut, You will find that you have less bind on blade, you always get a square cut on the wood all around it saves time , battery life and blade life. And ya don't have resquare your wood your working with. and I would bet you could have cut a extra 10-20 Pieces of 2x4. Its a hack all wood Framers use.

That is a great technique that I do use when I actually care about the cut - I'm just cutting so much with an endurance test like this that I don't bother with it. But now you've got me thinking that I might actually be able to squeeze some more run time out of the saw if I take extra care to keep it from binding.

Another good review, but now you leave me torn as to weather or not to buy this saw. I've been getting away from Dewalt, which I've used for decades now, because the Ryobi tools and batteries are so much cheaper. I've been very pleased with most of Ryobi's tools, not so much with others, whereas Dewalt has never let me down. The shortcomings of this saw are the plastic blade guard, no dust chute, and the stamped steel shoe. Those are some pretty serious cost-cutters that will affect the accuracy of the saw, (except for the the dust chute). And seriously, couldn't they include a rip guide? I'd be willing to pay the extra 50¢ it would have cost them. I'm wondering if a rip guide wasn't included because of the plastic blade guard.

It's great that Ryobi is finally getting into advanced features like brushless motors, but I think it's mainly going to be aimed at consumers who are only in the One+ battery platform, and are wistfully looking over the fence at all the other manufacturers who are really innovating and pushing capabilities of cordless. If you've got batteries in another system (especially Ridgid that's just $20 more expensive), then it's probably worth going with the more expensive competitor for the upgrade in performance and quality. I've even seen the DeWalt FlexVolt 7-1/4" circular saw for as low as $150 bare tool, and that's on a whole different level of performance over this saw.

I’ve had the older 6.5” brushed version of this saw for a couple years now and it’s been used regularly in that time. So far the plastic blade guard hasn’t been a problem.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not worried about the plastic breaking, I'm concerned about how it flexes. Some manufacturers of track saw guides specifically state not to use a saw with a plastic blade guard for that very reason. I'm just going to keep using my old Dewalt as a cordless. I have half a dozen corded skill saws that I can use if needed. Actually, I have a nice Makita cordless but I haven't been able to find the darn thing in years!

I haven't had any issues with it cutting straight myself. If I need a perfect cut, I'll use a guide with it. Now bevel on the other hand, this thing has some problems if you need perfection. I found it only hit 90° perfectly when I had the blade at full depth. When you raise it up, it goes a tiny bit out of square for bevel unless you re-adjust the bevel setting.

You could always cut with the larger part of the shoe on the larger portion of what you are cutting just go in the other direction. That is not why brushless is better by the way.

You can cut the opposite way if you're rip cuttng. But if you're cross cutting, you generally hold the saw with your dominant hand and hold the workpiece with your non-dominant hand, and let the offcut just drop. If you cut from the opposite side, now you're holding the offcut instead of the workpiece. I don't remember exactly what I said about brushless, but the main advantage is better efficiency which provides more runtime per battery charge. They're also more powerful and don't need the added maintenance of replacing worn brushes.

It does not have a built in laser. My personal opinion on lasers for circular saws is that they're just a gimmick though. If the kerf indicator on the front of the shoe isn't sufficient for keeping the cut lined up accurately, then a rip guide is needed.

Quite a few of the initial Ryobi brushless tools have the contacts, even though they were released prior to any "HP" branded tools or batteries. I guess Ryobi was just planning for forward compatibility.

1. Is it dangerous to have a plastic upper blade guard when cutting certain materials? 2. Has anyone here had a problem with making a 90 degree angle when setting the blade depth as noted at 8:10?

The plastic upper blade guard shouldn't be a safety concern. It's more of a quality indicator than anything - the shoe of a saw is often attached to the upper blade guard, so if the guard deflects a tiny amount, then the squareness of cut can suffer.

@@MrC9Oh3 the reason that most saws have a blade on the right is because most people are right handed and do not know how to safely operate their power tools. When held in the right hand this design keeps the motor and body of the saw between the user and the blade so that when Joe idiot is holding the saw down by his thigh and accidentally pulls the trigger the chances of him cutting half way through his thigh are drastically reduced. If you look at the type of circular saws carpenters and professionals tend to use (worm drive and hypoid) almost all of them have the blade on the left since this allows a right handed person to make accurate cuts with much greater ease which is of great importance to the professional for whom time is money and safe practices are second nature. The correct side to have the blade on is the side that you are most comfortable with. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

No that's not what One+ means, it only takes Ryobi 18V batteries. The only exception I can think of is Arctic Cove, who uses the exact same batteries with a different color scheme. Most other Ryobi One+ 18V tools do not have the extra contacts unless they have brushless motors. I have a garage full of them, and I have checked. The only batteries that have the matching contacts are the new HP versions, which came out after I made this review - so my hypothesis was correct.

Don't forget the larger blade diameter puts the surface feet per minute a little closer between the two saws, but this one's still fairly slow when compared to other cordless brushless saws. The P507 comes out to around 8,000 SFM, and the P508 is 7,022 SFM. They likely lowered the blade speed for power reasons, since power=torque*rotational speed, and they're bumping up torque required due to the larger blade diameter.

That one's a little harder to gauge, since some of the leading manufacturers are starting to make "more powerful than corded" claims with their cordless tools. However, Ryobi isn't at the leading edge of battery technology, so I'd say it's a safe bet that their corded 10" saw is more powerful than their X2 cordless.

I'd really recommend replacing the blade the saw comes with, since Ryobi stock blades are very poor quality in my experience. I see your point though, I technically made a $10 upgrade to the saw and then reviewed it.

The bare tool price is getting a little high for most Ryobi tools, but the move to brushless does come with increased cost of components. Ryobi doesn't want their users leaving for another brand because they aren't keeping up with the rest of the power tool industry's capabilities, so hence this new line of brushless tools. If you wait for a promo to buy this, it's much easier to justify the cost - I paid $150 for the brushless hammer drill, one P108 battery, the P117 charger, and this brushless circular saw.

Check the date I posted this video. It predates the release of the HP batteries. At the time I made it, the 4Ah P108 was the best they offered.
