I had a ryobi trimmer that wouldn’t crank. Newer than the one you had. I replaced the carburetor and fuel lines but it still wouldn’t crank. After watching your video , I used the acetone and brake cleaner but it still wouldn’t crank. So I took it apart again and noticed that one of the bolts that held the cylinder head on was loose. So I tighten the bolt down and also cleaned the exhaust port and tried the acetone and brake cleaner again. And it finally cranked! Thanks to your video I didn’t give up and it’s working fine now. Thanks.

I have to say these videos on this trimmer were really educational and well done. I never knew carbon could build up that bad but I'm still learning. Thanks for sharing with us and I wish you well with your eye issues. Make more repair videos when you can.

Wow it looks as if I was right Artie.. The piston crown runs very close to the squish band so a small amount of carbon can easily cause that issue.. Well done and great videos..

Hey Artie I hope all is well with you my good friend. Nice job get your Ryobi weed eater back in good running order. Those 2 stokes can be a bugger to work on sometimes they are so finicky especially when your udjusting on the carburetor. I like Ryobi a have had a few Ryobi's and I know some people that also have Ryobi equipment and they do preform well. Thanks for sharing this video I enjoyed it. Take care my friend and stay well. 👍👍🔧🔧

Glad you followed up. I have the exact issue. I bought 2 ryobi trimmers thinking I could fix it. I had it all apart and can't see an issue. I will try the acetone and see if it works. I am still confused how the carbon build up would create the pressure.

So could you just put the acetone into the spark plug hole without removing anything besides the spark plug?

Artie you are the Columbo of power equipment! Do you have to use Ethanol fuels there in NJ or can you access non eth fuel? im wondering if type of fuel or what 2 cycle oil might have an effect on carbon build up or prevention. Thanks for an engaging mystery.

@@gravelyman we can get it here in VT at some stations but its as expensive as diced lions. I do spend the extra for it in my power equipment. Not sure at all about it being a factor, actually youd think that ethanol would help prevent carbon. I hope the unit runs well from here on out for you.

Not running is a vague comment. so If won't start at all, even after shooting starter fluid into the Air filter hole, it's generally a spark issue(sparkplug, or coil), If it starts and it stalls, than it will be a fuel or air issue, as those are the two ingredient to get the engine going. IF that's the case, check your fuel line to see if it's in good condition, if yoru fuel line is crumbling/cracking, it might mean the fuel is bad, and the fuel filter, line and gas, needs replacing, If that doesn't work, gently take apart the carburetor, making sure all the gasket is in tact, and then get some carburetor cleaner and spray all the holes you can find in the metal parts. Focus mainly on a little tiny metal mesh/screen that is there. If that doesn't work, find the exhaust, and take that apart, and look for a metal screen call the spark arrester, take that and torch it til it glows red to burn off all the oil (I personally just soak it in old gas and brush it clean with a toothbrush) . If all this doesn't work, there is a screw on your carburetor, tightening it a couple turns and try to start it. If it started, you just wasted all your time fixing something that's not broke. LOL. I did this to all three of my dad's dead trimmer, and now all of them works on first pull. But one thing that my dad does and the reason why his machine is able to work after is a simple maintenance, is using oil rich fuel. It's bad, but not as bad as having no oil in the fuel. So 40:1 is better than 50:1.

You didn't solve any problem. when the engine warms up, restart right up. IT'S JUST TO MUCH COMPRESION that you reliefs without the spark plug.
