My favorite aspect of Sukuna him not being befriendable. Him being irredeemably pure evil is what makes his character great. He isn't the 9 tails or Yami Yuji. There is no "taming" him. Every time he comes out the audience is reminded that he is an inner demon, something you should NEVER want to come out.

I really like how Sukuna is written as the "enemy within" trope. In most shonen anime (like bleach, naruto, inuyasha) where this trope shows up, we are supposed to be scared of this thing possessing the hero's body. But it never really works, because the thing appearing often helps the hero: it wins a difficult fight, it saves the hero from an injury, it kills other bad guys. Most importantly, there are never consequences for the thing appearing and the hero never loses control at inconvenient times. Sukuna completely flips this on its head by being an actual scheming villain, not a plot armor that only shows up when the hero needs to win a tough fight. He actually kills people. Yuuji is absolutely terrified of him and ***spoiler alert*** even considered killing himself after Sukuna gained control at one point. That's something you never see in shonen anime; it's like the hero loses control but afterwards it's all fun and games.

The moment that really made me appreciate Sukuna was when Yuji unleashed him on the first special grade they encounter and rather than just mindlessly destroying whatever was around him he thought of a way to ensure Yuji couldn't just use him and then put him back in the jar. So while he's not much of a scheming long term villain he's also really dang smart and knowing that at any time he could cash in on that deal and take over Yuji adds a lot of background tension and makes him feel like he's in control and he's playing our hero's rather than the other way around.

Every fight looked like it _could_ be the last one, but something would happen to turn the tides back in the villain’s favor. Aizen and Sukuna just aren’t even threatened in most of their fights. @strayorion2031 But they can still do it in creative or off the wall ways. When I think of a villain who seemed unbeatable, even against the strongest characters in their respective worlds, I think of characters like Meruem from Hunter x Hunter. Someone who is undeniably the peak of power that a living being can obtain - but then the humans decide to nuke him in close quarters. At this point, it'd be a bit unfulfilling for Sukuna to just die in a 1v1 or even being jumped without some serious considerations taken to make his defeat seem believable while still being interesting. I think many would be unsatisfied with Sukuna losing to the standard shounen tropes of "a bigger power up" or a sudden asspull. Luckily, JJK has done a fairly good job of straying from those tropes for the most part.

Literally in the first few episodes, when I saw my man Sukuna RIPPING YUJI's heart out to not give him back control(or rather ensuring Yuji's death upon him regaining it) while being so nonchalant about it I knew: "This mf. is NOT Kurama 2, Electric Boogaloo" As an anime only early on, it was impossible to not draw the Naruto parallell as Yuji and Megumi looked a lot like Naruto and Sasuke, visually at least (and personality wise to be fair). So naturally I thought Sukuna might turn out to be a Kurama situation which would've been lame, given the similarities. Buuut nope, Sukuna is simply bodying each and every one so far...and the difference in power is just...it's One Punch Man but as a villain. His demeanor, charisma and confidence are also huge contributors to his overall uniqueness. When this man says " I will kill X character", I believe him...as soul crushing as it may be to come to terms that our heroes' demise is sealed. Honestly I want JJK to be a tragedy in the end. I want Sukuna to win. I want the heroes to give their all, use every available tactic, but I want to simply see that Sukuna's simple mentality of being the Strongest is enough to win.

@@johnlennon3107 I have my gripes and worries with where the manga is going rn and the current fiasco goin on, but this is actually one of the points I disagree with. Sukuna doesn't, nor has ever striked me as the Yujiro Hanma type (has every trick up his sleeve but wants to win through brute force alone), he seems more like a dirty fighter that'll win with whatever means necessary. Furthermore the manga addresses the fact Sukuna has a gauntlet to run, he has to be conscious of his resources, and so took the path of least resistance to get through Gojo. That tells me that without Ten Shadows he would've had to invest significantly more in putting Gojo down, and considering it took roughly half of his total CE, I'd say he made the right call.

"Sukuna is a villain that is above villainy" is the best way to describe him. He really shows that against Jogo saying how desperate curses are to be evil. He calls Gojo greedy for wanting more than the stature he already has. He was never considered himself the strongest or born, he was just is because he finds satisfaction in killing with jujutsu. What he doesn't understand is that it doesn't fix his dissatisfaction as much as it seems, which is why he pauses after higoruma. He understands more sorcerers will come and most likely the same result will happen where he wins but that's just a dead end. So he thinks "am i wrong? I like to kill and not care right?". Then he proceeds to give himself a goal to destroy the ideals of yuji just for fun because he doesn't want to understand his true problem. His actions are meaningless but he doesn't want to accept it, this entire final fight with sorcerers is Sukuna gaslighting himself into thinking what he's doing is satisfying. Yuji will break it when he finally speaks to Sukuna through battle and his character will begin to show cracks. It's honestly amazing what gege did with him so far but people choose to ignore his progression. Sukuna is a wonderful anime/manga character.

Adding a little bit of the development the manga does: at some point in the history sukuna wonders why a person like yuuji, who in any other situation would be boring and one more ant to step on, annoys him so much, why does he, the one above ideals, have such a guttural reaction to yuuji's ideals, and he realizes that the one that changed was him; when he fought people with ideals like yuuji before, those ideals were alien and foreign to him, he never knew if those were the ideals for which they lived or just some words they said to give meaning to their death. They shared a body, and in that process yuuji leaned about sukuna and sukuna learned about yuuji, sukuna KNOWS the extend of yuuji's will, and seeing how that determination has taken yuuji (who sukuna considers to be a bore) so far annoys him.

Eh... He's only interesting when he's still a mystery, if you ask me. The initial appeal of him is that question of how something like him even exists, what he wants, his goals, etc. Unfortunately, when Gege actually gets around to answering that, there was no possible way it could be more interesting than the question itself. It would be like if Togashi gave us an elaborate flashback that detailed all of the parts of Hisoka's backstory we don't know. The fun of characters like these are the questions, not the answers. The enjoyment comes from engaging with that question, theorizing and coming up with ideas - projection and interpretation. Those blanks are left blank for the audience. At the point the manga is at currently, Sukuna feels very bland, and I think that's why Gege is trying to do this very odd, last minute characterization of Sukuna in a series that is clearly meant to be ending sometime soon. He went from being one of my favorite characters to one that I just find boring at this point. Maybe I'll be surprised by the ending or Gege has some ingenious twist I won't see coming, but I'm honestly really bored and it feels like I'm just waiting for *somebody* to finally finish this fight after like 8 fucking people have jobbed to this guy.

The reason there are so many inner beasts and rage transformations in shounen is because puberty is when boys start to become aware of their anger and capacity for violence, and also how important it is to suppress. Shounen is fundamentally all about the power fantasy, so things like Kurama let the young male readership in a largely repressive Japanese society fantasise about letting all their bottled anger out, and how no one could stop them if they did. Sukuna is different, because he emphasises disempowerment instead of empowerment. He stains his vessels with the crimes he commits through them, and makes them feel overwhelming guilt for things we know they aren't really responsible for. When you get angry, it sometimes does feel like someone else is in control, and afterwards you wish it was, because you can't imagine yourself doing and saying the things you know you did. Sukuna isn't just an independent person, it's like he's all the worst things about people. He's totally motivated by base impulses and other people's lives basically don't exist to him. He's the logical end-point of the behaviour we've all regrettably engaged in at some point.

Tbh it seems to me you don’t quite understand Sukuna. He doesn’t just like suffering as you said he’s more complex than that. You should probably read the manga if you don’t want to wait 5 years for jjk season 4 you’ll see more of his philosophy and world view on it.
@xavierthomas58358 ай бұрын
Even if he does just read the manga, like you said, everything he says and does only informs the fact that he enjoys the suffering of others and death. I'm not sure you actually understand his character. What part of him have you seen that would make you think he doesn't JUST enjoy the suffering of others?
@joaoalves93308 ай бұрын
@@xavierthomas5835 Manga spoilers He doesn't enjoy mindless suffering per say. Like if he sees a random person suffering on the side of the road he won't enjoy it. What he loves is battle and seeing strong opponents giving it their all. He loves that struggle and that clash of wills. He is kinda like Madara or Goku they're all characters who love fighting. He loves seeing his opponents giving it their all so much so that he felt remorse for killing higuruma because he never got see his full power. He also forms bonds with the people he fights and is kind to them in the afterlife as seen with Jogo and Kashimo. He saw the fights he fought in the heian era as a form of kindness too because he knew how much those warriors had trained and how how much those fights mattered to them. He knew that to those warriors even being acknowledged by Sukuna as a worthy opponent was a greater honor than any of them could hope to have. He is an awful person morally but he isn't a mindless murder machine. He explains all this pretty well in chapter 238 I believe.

I believe that, even better than Kurama, Boruto's Momoshiki is one of the best examples. He's sooo related to Sukuna in some sense. Personality, the karma progression, all that. And since we got to know how strong he was from the beginning, we know to fear him as his return is foreshadowed. And his prophecies that "His blue eyes will make him lose everything" and now Boruto really losing everything, is truly goat writing.

While this is a great video and I do agree with most of what you said. Not spoiling anyone with details, these things don’t apply to Sukuna anymore & ruins the character in some aspects :(

I think you brushed up against a really interesting aspect of his character when pointing out that, unlike most other soul-linked characters, when he takes control he isn't a mindless creature of pure rage, but very much himself. We get much more development of him as a character like you mentioned, but we also get a really interesting commentary on the character archetype with this contrast. Most soul-linked characters serve as a kind of metaphor for "the animal within", when we are pushed to our absolute breaking point we give in to our basest desires and go feral, lashing out at anything and everything around us. This usually serves to reinforce the idea that civilization and living in harmony with one another is what separates us from the animals, creatures of pure instinct who cannot be reasoned with. The typical trajectory this follows is that the character learns to tame the animal and live in harmony with it, like Naruto and Kurama, as over several seasons the soul-linked character becomes more humanized and develops agency. The difference with Sukuna is that (ironically) he is very human from the start, he is in complete control of himself which paints a very different picture. Whereas other soul-linked characters are used to depict us giving into our basest desires as something very animalistic and foreign, Sukuna is uncomfortably familiar. He's not a wild animal, he's just an incredibly sadistic and selfish person. He theoretically could be reasoned with, but he simply has no interest in anything anyone else has to offer him. This inversion of the trope not only makes him a much more interesting character, I think it provides a much more nuanced depiction of humanity's basest desires. They're not something we only give in to as the result of feeling like a cornered animal, but far too often something people indulge for personal pleasure because they feel above everyone else.

Part of what adds to the charisma/ godlike feel Sukuna has is as you say the only fight we see him lose/ seem to struggle with is against Gojo, but notably that's right at the start when he's only at 1 finger. The next time we see him fight is the special grade finger bearer which had completely outmatched Yuji and Megumi to a point of forcing Yuji to recognise the scale of the Jujutsu world and where he currently stands in it. At this point Yuji's eaten 2 fingers, so I guess it shouldn't be super surprising given that it's a 1 finger level curse vs a 2 finger level Sukuna, but he eclipse it to the point it's a complete role reversal and mocks it and the sorcerer's system by remarking about how they're both considered "special grade" despite the clear power disparity, and the cruse goes from being outright terrified of him to actively trying to seek his approval. He has a "Jogo moment" of being matched up against the strongest guy in the story at the time when he's at his weakest, which sows the question of "does this still go down the same if Sukuna were at full power?".

There are 2 more differences between Sukuna and other body sharing villains. Firstly, every time he shows up he does not just fight other villains he also either attacks and toys with our heroes or kills civilians. After killing the finger curse he immediately went to attack Megumi and when he was fighting Jogo he played with Panda and Kushakabe putting their lives in danger. Then his fight with Mahoraga he wiped out all of Shibuya killing thousands and enjoying in the deaths he caused. Other body sharing villains may be dangerous and they may hurt a character we like but rarely if ever do they actually start killing people but Sukuna is an exception. Secondly, the other major difference is that he can't be relied on when the mc is loosing. Against the finger bearer he straight up says that he will kill Megumi and play with Nobara if he is released. He was also fine with Yuji dying. Then in season 2 when Yuji lost and was about to die against Choso he was going to let Yuji die. Under body sharing character typically don't want their host to die but Sukuna is fine with it as he has other fingers and will not die.

Hello man, I love your analysis and perception of the characters. And also just to let you know, I think it would be nice if you are present in the brightest side of the video. Because I try to listen to you but the light from the window and computer is super distracting. Like my eyeballs tend to roll over to those often, making it difficult to focus.
