The only thing I find wrong with this philosophy is that when people do this they forget that jiu jitsu is also about control and establishing dominant positions. So usually white belts and blue belts get like this sweet tooth for heel hooks and maybe some other submission and they never learn how to move and sweep and scramble correctly in general.

Yeah I think they do points to appeal for the weaker skill players. Imagine a white belt division of 20 minutes per match of flailing it would take all day. Or kids who its risky to allow them to try and hurt the other one so they just do points instead.

It is a weird rule, but that would not have been points in competition. The sweep didn't originate from guard, and didn't involve the legs
@TWoNaGe
@TWoNaGe 6 жыл бұрын
@@DocGr8pples It's iffy, but more than likely it would have been two points in the heat of the moment. He initiated the sweep with the hook, then continued the transition with his knee, then there was a second of stall, and finally he finished with the bridge and arms. Most refs would have awarded the two points.

To make it simple, almost none of "the commentator" suggestions considering reffing were correct. 1. You dont get points for escaping a hold or a choke, you actually lose an advantage point. 2. Sweep does not have to involve legs, sweep is moving from the bottom, or disadvantageous position to the top (and holding control for over 3 seconds). 3. POints do not matter when the guy taps. 4. Take down is 2 points, not 3.
@holdenmuganda97
@holdenmuganda97 4 жыл бұрын
In bjj reversals aren’t scored. So rolling from bottom mount to top guard doesn’t score. But this also includes going from bottom side control to top side control. I think that’s dumb in that case because there are legitimate good reversal techniques from bottom side to top side.

"That's not points, that's not points" Example of the SOMETIMES bad side of Jiu Jitsu or "Tournament Jiu Jitsu." There is nothing wrong with tournament style but situations like this make me dislike it even more.. People learning Jiu Jitsu to counter Jiu Jitsu and when they go into tournaments, they only go for ways to rack up points and not go for finishes.. Heck, a lot of Jiu Jitsu practitioners that are blue and purple belts know how to defend other techniques yet can't clinch correctly or defend against strikes. When THAT happens, THAT'S when I question tournament style Jiu Jitsu. Jiu Jitsu at it's heart and soul is about self defense and the fact Gorilla got TAPPED and the guy is still complaining about stupid points shows the mindset of some people. Shake hands, congratulate and move on.

I'm sorry Rick lost this one. He never escaped the Omeplata Ryron simply let it go to get back control which he did. Rick then turns and was unable to scramble out which put him in another bad position with Ryron gaining back control. "Was that a strike?" No, that's called stuffing. It's like what you do to a turkey..momentum turned into a skinny hand to slip through the opening. Those aren't hooks..LMFAO! That's called T'ing off which is a set up for a multitude of submissions. It completely takes Rick's entire lower half out of the equation. It sets up a Triangle Armbar, Armbar, triangle choke, etc..the list can be virtually endless. Was it actually tied up when he said it was? Points or not an undeniable rear naked choke sealed Rick's fate and the camera man is to blame. Rick was looking to him for advice and he was busy arguing over fucking points. Great Job Rick and Ryron. Cameraman is a douche.

When Laimon won Ryron in a fight, it was timed/scored and all he did was get some quick points and stall the rest of the way. While technically, he (Laimon, the loudmouth coach) can say he beat a Gracie, in a more real world untimed, unscored fight he would be put to sleep.

Could the guy who cared about points shut it...Ryron won by submission which negates whatever calls he felt were shady... They both rolled great...excellent video...bad commentary.
