Sammy destroyed the backhand weakness of the JPen.

I would personally say the weakness is a mentality/comfortability aspect, of the game. When samsanov faced Kim, it was a little different as Kim was more balanced and had a much better backhand block, backhand drive, he was more consistent than ryu, making it more difficult for samsanov.

I would say this was ryu’s best chance ever to beat samsanov. He lost this due to not going for topsins on the backhand side and fishing more than he should have and some service errors, their was this one rally where ryu did a backhand drive and then turned the rally by being in control, he needed to do that even more if wanted to win. Hence why Kim taek soo was more comfortable with players like samsanov as his backhand was better than ryu’s.

Ryu had much better serves and played closer to the table.He was a better player but due to the 40mm Korean penhold game became weaker. I don't think he ever faced Samsonov in a big competition.When he was pumped up he was still dangerous.Watch his 2007 World Cup run.

@@dickn.ormous1064 during 2003-2007 I would say was his strongest, I did some research on ryu’s head to head with samsanov and ryu actually beat samsanov I think 2times. Personally I think Kim was more balanced and consistent than ryu, but ryu had better footwork also while having a better forehand, just my opinion.

@@dickn.ormous1064 btw his 2007 World Cup run was insane, unfortunate he had to face 3 Chinese players back to back to back, man couldn’t catch a break.
How can a shakehander not win against a one-side penholder? Theoretically penholders don't stand a chance.
@unpoulet68594 жыл бұрын
No thats just a way of holding racket. Ryu play style is footwork oriented thats why he can use so effectively the j-pen racket. Thats also an old play style, its not very popular nowadays.

Ryu is Olympic champion, so why you're theory is peace of shit))

Yeah, just watch how this guy crashes the ball

theoretically the jpen grip favors forehand enough to compensate for backhand

if the ball is just coming back with random placement, then J-pen won't stand a chance, but serve with the pen is harder for the opponent to return, pen can create more spin than shake, so it will be easier for a penholder to control the game with its' serve. And the forehand of a penhold is often more powerful, Sam is one of the best blocker in tt, but you can see in this game the forehand of Ryu is too powerful to handle completely. Sadly ITTF change the ball and pen will never be the same like it use to be.
