The new skyrocketing rising analogous sport of PICKLEBALL is reminding that : The current table tennis version of heavyweight 2.7gram balls is full range stupid. Must immediately, as soon as possible, apply new lightweight balls of 2gram or 2.5gram balls. Heavyweight balls fly too fast because air resistence can not effective slow down them. Too difficult to control heavyweight balls, and extreme difficult to catch fast heavyweight table tennis balls. It is the reason of why almost all table tennis beginers leave out teble tennis or do not want to try playing table tennis. Need atleast few years of training for beginers in order to play amateur table tennis games of heavyweight 2.7gram balls. IT IS THE ALL-TIME HUMAN HISTORY MOST STUPID CONDITION OF SPORT TODAY IN THE AGE OF BUSY LIFE. Who will pay few years of training to reach level of playing basic amateur table tennis games ? Look at the new skyrocketing rising sport PICKLEBALL : the Pickleball federation setup very logical scientific standard for pickleball balls : the pickleball balls have very reasonable very lightweight (in the context of distances in pickleball sport), pickleball balls even have holes in ball outer surface to decrease ball weight. All of them lead to the to result : the lightweight pickleball balls fly in air with ENOUGH SLOW SPEED, so that in the distances in pickleball sport, players have enough time to react to apply techniques and tactics and get funs. And because players can succeed to react, Pickleball is very easy for beginers quickly to play basic amateur games to get funs even without any training. Players must succeed to react to balls speed. It is the first condition for sport to be human sport. I see that in many societies today, there are even more commercial PICKLEBALL CLUBS than table tennis clubs. Everyone can easily quickly play amateur pickleball games for funs and communications. While it requires few years of training for beginers to play amateur table tennis games. It is obviously quite clearly stupid in table tennis. It affects table tennis equipment manufacturers (less new beginers, less markets), spectators (waste time to watch so much offgame time of picking up table tennis balls). The most reason : STUPID HEAVY WEIGHT OF CURRENT TABLE TENNIS BALLS. So if the international table tennis can not quickly come to consensus of applying new lightweight (2-2.5gram balls) table tennis balls, then TABLE TENNIS SPORT MUST GIVE UP MORE THEIR ROOM TO PICKLEBALL SPORT IN OLYMPICS, in order to regard audience by stopping wasting time of table tennis audience in bored table tennis matches with much offgame time of going picking up balls and less ongame time of playing table tennis. Liu Guolang, the chinese table tennis legend as player and coach, once said that he concerns about the popularity of table tennis more than the results of matches. Heavyweight balls are luring stupid stuff in table tennis. They make table tennis become bored with very few touches in every balls series, and with more offgame time, less long rallies, less visual athletic skills shows. Simple reason : heavyweight balls fly too lightening fast, and players can not succeed to react to apply techniques. (All heavyweight objects like stones and heavyweight balls can fly lightening fast in air, but lightweight objects as small lightweight paper box can not fly fast in air due to effectively air resistence). The less touches in every ball series, the less ongame time, the more offgame time, and players lose more their time for offgame time to go to pick up balls. HEAVYWEIGHT BALLS MAKE TABLE TENNIS MANUFACTURER AND PROFESSIONAL PLAYERS TO BE POORER AND POORER, because heavyweight balls make table tennis extremely difficult to play amateur social games for new beginners. Thus majority of new beginners leave away from table tennis, and there be very few new beginners still keep playing table tennis (extremely difficult to play game for beginners). It requires few weeks of training for new beginners to reach minimal amateur levels to play amateur social games in other sport, for example in badminton, billards, .. . BUT IT REQUIRES FEW YEARS OF TRAINING FOR NEW BEGINNERS TO REACH MINIMAL AMATEUR LEVEL TO PLAY AMATEUR SOCIAL TABLE TENNIS GAMES. It is very stupid big time training requirement for beginners in table tennis, thus majority of new beinners just leave table tennis. I personally see much many real life cases today : private commercial table tennis club halls are revamped to become badminton club halls, because table tennis is extreme difficult to attract enough number of new beginners to get profit for running commercial table tennis clubs as commercial social sport services. If the commercial private table tennis halls have high ceils, then their owners often cancel table tennis club services to convert halls into commercial badminton club or other sport services halls to get profit, because there are very few new amateur table tennis players. The reason of stiff difficulty of table tennis for new beginners : heavyweight balls make table tennis to be extremely difficult for new beginners : they fly extremely lightening fast in air, and they are difficult to control for beginners. Lightweight balls make table tennis become extreme easier for new beginners : they fly slower in air, they are easier to control for beginners. With lightweight balls, every ball series will have more touches in average. Thus table tennis matches will have more ongame time and less offgame times, thus players have more ongame time. It is valuable ! Because amateur players pay their time to play table tennis matches for health and social fun/communication, thus the more offgame time, the more waste time for players ! Everyone can try lightweight balls, for example 2gr balls, to feel how extremely more easily to play table tennis for new beginners. The next balls of table tennis must be lightweight balls, for example, 2-2.5gr balls instead of the current 2.7gr balls. The result of lightweight balls will be staggering : there will be more billion new beginners come and keep playing table tennis with new lightweight balls of 2gr, because lightweight balls do not require stupid enormous few years of training to reach minimal amateur level to play amateur social table tennis game, but require only few weeks of training enough to play amateur social table tennis games. Of course, it leads to increadible big scale business of table tennis equipment manufacturers, it leads to increadible big number of table tennis audience of professional tournaments . Because new billion beginners will play and keep playing the easier version of table tennis with lightweight balls 2-2.5gram, but not the current stupid extreme difficult version of table tennis with heavyweight balls 2.7gram, thus they known playing table tennis as amateur players and once they known playing then they will have interest to watch table tennis tournaments. They will be billion one, once lightweight balls 2-2.5gram are applied in table

@@RalphHund It definitely cannot be denied. I am always amused when I read people saying "Oh, Ma Long would easily have beaten Waldner if they had played each other when they were both in their prime." This is complete nonsense. The great Swede was a clever player, and knew exactly how to 'shut down' opponents. The fact is, Ma Long never played anyone even remotely close to Waldner in terms of what they could do with the ball. He just wouldn't have allowed him to play his own game. (none of this is any disrespect to Ma Long. Waldner would have done exactly the same to Wang Liqin, who I also admire for his forehand and athleticism)

I really don't know if you watch much of current table this with that opinion. It feels like to me the often misplaced nastalgia people do with everything "it was better in the old days" when often times it wasn't. Don't get me wrong. There were cool things about the old days and the 38mm ball celluoid era. But lets not pretend there were not bad things too. So the ball was smaller and celluloid. The pace of a smashed ball was flat out faster. So points were over sooner. Less rallies. That's why short pips was so popular for a while. Smash it and the ball was basically unreturnable. Longer rallies make all the highlights and what people find fun to watch in the game. It's better now in that regard. Furthermore, my goodness go back and watch some old pros playing back in the day when you could dangle your arm out there essentially hiding the ball on the serve every bit of the way. How many aces did Waldner, and many other pros, get right off the serve because the placement & spin simply could not be seen? Serve, error, point over. Serve, error, point over. Not saying it was like that every time but it for sure was a higher % than now. That's bad viewership table tennis. Now players today still try to push it to the limit and hide the ball as much as they can within the rules but it's nothing like the old days. Lastly the change to 11 vs 21 was a good one making each game much closer vs a race to 21 where someone is up X number of points and you know who will win but we have to wait it out because the games were longer.

Waldner was playing a Chinese guy in the Olympics, he came up to him and said my coach said he played against you before. He said I played against your coaches coach. That’s why the Chinese call him evergreen. He played in the Olympics when he was 38 I believe and lost in the bronze metal match. At 38, he’s roughly 12 years passed the Chinese players prime.

Stick to the thin tacky rubber/sponge combos front and backsides of bade in a match always, no matter who You play. The carbon blade will take care of speed and distance. Everything else comes from prior competitions. Ps. Notice taking chances are not a part of His game, defense is His best offense. Keep crushing that eggshell, young ppl . Ove is the best ever.

It was legal back then. Now you're no longer allowed to keep your hand in such a way that it obstructs the view of the ball... might be a bit more complicated than that, but that's the short explanation.

It was a great sport, but playing with these balls is like playing football with a double sized ball without any air pressure.@@amadeusbm
