Ryze Tello Drone & Mi Repeater 2 Distance Test Video

It has been several weeks since we first looked at this collaboration drone between DJI and Ryze robotics called Tello. While i was planning the videos for this week i thought it would be interesting to see how far this quadcopter goes when attached to a repeater, to be more precise the Mi repeater 2 by Xiaomi. With this signal booster im hoping to at least double if not triple the distance of this little drone and if that is the case then it will dramatically change how this drone is used and i think a lot more people would enjoy this more and maybe even love this little guy.

I have manage 169 metres with a Mi 2 repeater and measured it using a Phantom. I will be doing a further range test on my channel asap weather permitting. I am most impressed with Tello as you can tell. 👍

you can take it MUCH farther then what you showed here. JUST on wifi from iphone 7+ i can take mine to 99 ft up. was scared to lose it so didn't fly around, so... 100 ft was the distance and it was ok. Then I put an extender on it and can EASIER go 300+ feet. I will be testing in open area for MAX distance but guessing it will be close to 500.

If it were me i would have flown it out until it started to break up like it did when you had no repeater on it. As it stands you still don't know how far it can go with the repeater. I bet it would have gone to the distant woods and maybe even farther. Happy Flying

That Mi Repeater comes in at just £12.99 on Amazon seems like a bargain for the extra range you got there. Im sure I saw those bushes rustling as you flew to the edge of that wood!

Hey templetogs yeah I think it's worth it, I've used it a few times and I've not been disappointed yet. There is a link in the description, it's £8 on there if I remember correctly. I'd like to see that...where is the link? The one issue I have with the Tello is that owe don't have great lighting in the home, so the visual positioning stops quite often, which leads to immense frustration wihen I just want to use it in the house. Any ideas?

Looks like the wifi repeater is essential to exploit the full potential of the little tello. Just not sure why they didn't go with a 2.4ghz transmitter instead of wifi control in the first place?

I would say so mate, well I would think it would be because they wanted it to be a backpack item so it could be carried almost anywhere, and used for selfies etc. But, in reality adding a transmitter wouldn't have taken up hardy any extra space. Thanks mate 👍😀

Thanks for the Video! I assume that the WIFI signal is always displayed as being that strong cause it represents the signal strength of the smartphone-to-repeater-connection and not the whole connection between the tello and the smartphone. Or am I wrong? I‘ve tested the same setup today for the first time only roughly and had to deal with a lot of lags controlling the tello. Tried only short distances. Disappointing first try but will keep on trying... cheers!

Hey Mario I've tested a lot using this repeater and little Tello and only had a small amount of lag when I took her out a bit too far. Keep your repeater as high as you possibly can and you may find the lag disappears. Thanks bud 👍😀

I must have missed something here. In your video at approx. 8:52, you posted range without repeater of 16 ft ?? Range with repeater of 30ft, you stated you could have flown another 5 or 6ft. Please tell me you ment “meters” not “feet”. You also indicated you flew further, so please clarify... ft...meters...or yds, and if you flew further...how much further??

Hi Jim thanks for your comment no I meant feet I said I probably could have pushed another 5 or 6 feet based on signal strength still being strong, drone still able to be operated fully as far as I could tell from the limited telemetry available to me. I did 2 'control' tests that measure 14 and 16 feet and then one with the repeater that measured 30 feet that was the test that I flew further in, further than 16 max at 30. 👍

How do you connect the tello to the phone once using repeater? Also do you need to change the distance limiter???

Hey Matt great questions, you choose the 'plus' network that is available once you have set the repeater up. So it shows a connection, something like 'tello-plus' that is the repeater. No distance limiters were changed / altered at all. Thanks bud 😀👍

Its ashame the range is so limited on this drone. Seriously at 16ft what is the point? Even with repeater then you get around 30ft still lowsey. I am now wondering what the hell they are talking about with 100m dist on dji site? They need to do something about the range. As of now I say buy a hubsan drone for the same price or less and even get gps. I've seen $30 and $40 drones with 10x the range of this.

Hey Flyby Imaging LA I do agree the range without repeater isnt great but I also think the marketing on this drone was wrong. It should have been marketed as a short flight mobile camera for parties or gatherings. I think in order to get 100ft you would certainly need a repeater of some.sort, there is no way you could reach that without. At least I've not seen any evidence from all my flights with it that say it would be possible. Thanks for your comment mate😀👍

Hey Kevan I have tested that as I was using stands USB 2, but I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work. I use type c for my phone with older USB devices plugged in and that works, as long as the OTG allows data and power transfer and not just power you should be ok. 👍🙂

Hey Captain Cold good question, i havent tried it (yet) but i don't see why not, the gamepad connects via bluetooth, but as you fly far away you may find the gamepad will stop responding. Depends on the bluetooth class, it could be anywhere from 50m to 150m as the crow flies, once you add environmental factors into that then the range may alter. Hope that helps you out :-)

Yes it does work quite well with the TD1 controller. I have not measured the distance but I can fly my Tello at the front of my house whilst I am at the back. The house is literally between the Tello and me and I am flying by watching my mobile.

Hey Cody it will indeed mate, I have done a few videos on a bit of distance with the Tello and it shocks me even today at how well it manages a lot of it. Ok with some bad wind it will get carried away, but on the whole it’s pretty great. Have you had it out that far?
