One of the greatest composers of all time. His talent and creativity were outstanding. This Sonata speaks volumes about his artistic skills. Starting at the 6:26 mark you can hear the composition transcend into that incredible melody at time 6:36 where you hear the magic of the genius. Then finally at the 18:15 minute mark we start to see that launch of transcending ensembles that would inspire Paganini.

It is a wonder he managed to compose anything considering he was constantly on the move. He fled Russia (twice) from the Communists, escaped to Istanbul (penniless), then to Yugoslavia, Austria, Paris then Berlin only to flee the Nazis. Back to Austria in time for WW2 during which he and his wife suffered emotional, physical and financial ruin (his works were stolen). He finally composed after the war but died in 1952. Talk about trials and tribulations! He should have fled to the US like Rachmaninoff.

I've been binge listening to his music and I wonder why he isn't played more. His music is beautiful and profound ! I am now trying to learn his "Diana" nocturne. Such sense of longing and poignancy.

@@mrjomaled755 His output was phenomenal. Such a shame his ultra-romanticism has been forgotten today. I love playing the Ballade, Elegie, the incredibly beautiful 8th prelude Op 33 and the first Trois Morceaux. They remind me of the 6 Moment Musicaux of Rachmaninoff that I also love. @@AlexanderTrukhinPianist ну да Харьков такой "русский" что был заснован в 1654 году за времена Б Хмельницкого, ну а оккупировать и присваивать чужое в русских в крови ну как в русских, вам это притаманно от золотой орды ,он почти всю свою жизнь разделял з Харьковом и Германией, поэтому русского от Борткевича только то что да он учился в Петербургской консе, и то он её даже не закончил, а перебрался в Германию, и ещё доказ того что он украинский, это его репрессии, если б он был таким русским патриотом его бы не репрессировали логично же? Поэтому прошу не спорить с Википедией.

Nice piece and very well played. Congratulations! As to music of Bortkiewicz, some of his passages are like excerpts from Rachmaninov piano concerts. I donť know whether they knew each other and were mutually influenced :-)

Pointing to other composers' influence is useful - if valid - but it also is definitely distracting from hearing what the composer is trying to convey to us at the moment. We won't learn anything really new if we keep trying to look at everything from the perspective of what we've already learned. Sometimes it takes a well stretch to understand. it's totally ok, but what I'm always facing in a fairly unknown composer's comments section, most of the time, is a comparison to the well-known. A composer being unpopular for me isn't equivalent to having had no important message to convey, at all. In fact, It sometimes might be the opposite, too, as the majority isn't known for taking the rational decisions. Another example of it can be our taste change in time, too; personally today I'm loving what I'd despised most. I was just incapable of understanding them at the time.

*also, the only reason people can't practice to *become* (for a lack of a better word) Rachmaninoff is because he made enormous use of his huge hands. (Pun intended)
