S.E.S. had more of an R&B feel to them as opposed to straight up pop by their second year. If you're familiar with Red Velvet's cover of 'Be Natural' from 2014 (it was their 2nd MV), you should check out S.E.S. who did the song originally (yes, there's an MV). Lee Soo Man revamped the industry in terms of training and how groups were put together. H.O.T. and S.E.S. were the first successful groups SM launched after implementing the changes, and set the standard for other agencies' training programs. Fun fact: Today, we take it for granted that wild hair colors go hand in hand with kpop comebacks, but it wasn't always the case. For their 1999 album 'Love', S.E.S dyed their hair with the most notable being Bada (Sea), who bleached her hair blonde. They shot the MV and were set to go on music shows, but were told the hair went against broadcast standards as 'being unnatural'. You have to understand no one was strolling around South Korea with dyed hair (other than to cover grey) back then. SM had a choice - change the hair by coloring it again/cover it with a wig...or be banned from promoting. This was a big deal because social media wasn't a thing and KZbin didn't exist yet. Going on the music shows was the main way of promoting (like it still is today). SM took a risk and stood by their decision. The broadcasters stood by their ultimatum. S.E.S. wasn't allowed to promote on the shows, but the ban and the reason behind it made the news. It got people talking, watching the MV and most agreed the hair color change shouldn't keep them off the air. Things changed after that. It was no longer unusual to see entertainers, actors or everyday people sporting different shades of brown, blonde, red and the occasional rainbow! Thanks to S.E.S. and SM, there's a little more self-expression.

S.E.S. debuted in 1997 and was S.M. Entertainment first girl group, the predecessor to Girls' Generation by a decade. Eugene was considered one of the great beauties of Kpop at the time.

Hey Mando, you remember Red Velvet’s “Be Natural” right?? That was actually their cover of S.E.S. YUP! S.E.S are the original singers of “Be Natural”! And yes there is a music video! S.E.S was THE GIRL GROUP back then! Seriously..the vocals, the dancing, and beauty! They all had it!! It’s definitely down your lane with the R&B touches and what not! Bada has an amazing voice! Eugene was and STILL is GORGEOUS AS EVER and multi-talented! Shoo is so versatile and has such a cool unique rapper, but can sing as well. Shoo and Eugene had done a lot of acting!! Oh and just to let you know you should totally react to their comeback reunion “Paradise” and “Remember”! It’s crazy how they look even more younger and gorgeous!!

The "flapping of the arms, twisting of the body" dance from I'm Your Girl has been imitated by so many Kpop artists through the years. It is instantaneously recognizable much like Brown Eyed Girls' Arrogant Dance from Abracadabra or Girls' Generation's Crab Dance from Gee.

If you know the korean show Infinite Challenge, you should check out episodes 409 to 411, they brought back several OG groups, since disbanded, and legendary kpop singers to do a nostalgia concert, I didn't even know most of them and I was shook. They had a couple of member substitutions for various reasons but the essence was the same as it had been a decade before. Really cool to watch, very moving.

OMG the OG girl group! Everything started with them. And honestly, I still think Eugene is the most beautiful girl that ever debuted in the idol world. Bada’s vocal skills are still pretty unrivaled until now. Also, the rappers in this song were Eric and Andy of Shinhwa, SM’s 2nd boygroup, who were still trainees at the time and debuted a few months later. :)

Hey, Mando! You'll be very surprised if I'll say you that Bada and Eugene now looks now exactly the same as 20 years ago. Shoo looks little bit older but she is the proud mother of 3 children. You can check out their very last comeback. It worth it.

S.E.S. stands for their names. Sea (Bada), Eugene, Shoo. haha. You should also react to Shinhwa's older stuff like Wild Eyes, Perfect Man, Yo, etc. the male voices you hear are actually from 2 members of Shinhwa. I believe it is Eric and Andy and they actually performed with them on some live stages back in the day. :)

I love Eugene so much, my favorite Korean drama of all times Save the last dance with Eugene and Ji Sung!!! I love her... and of Kpop is not different they are the same as music from here, we don't do music like Kpop in America because it has been done and we keep moving forward, there is no retro music in America, Koreans like the retro stuff... There are no new inventions in music... You said that was MJ well, check Shinee... Btob, infinite, they all have an American influence... BTS they all do music influenced by the West, hip hop was not invented by Koreans, it is a NY thing...

SNSD's Seohyun ended up standing in for Eugene in a recent (couple years ago) SES reunion performance (Eugene was enormously pregnant at the time), and the resemblance was startling. Also proves that Asian beauty is ageless. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGWVioaohK51icU

Their 2nd, 3rd and 4th music videos are: "Luv Me", "Talk To My Face", and "Thank You". Could you react to these music videos? 2) Tiny-G They debuted Aug 2012 with debut music video: "Tiny-G". Of course there are great variety in Kpop as well as Western songs if one looks outside the so-called mainstream market. And I have been listening to a lot of non-mainstream music; like Bandcamp for non-mainstream Western music and say KZbin channels like Mirrorball Music for Korean indie groups. There are lots of good unique songs there. But seriously how many people check those out, while the MVs from the popular groups can score tens of millions of views in a short time? It is stagnation of the style of the songs that frequent the "popular" charts and streaming sites that is not interesting to me. Whether it is rock, EDM, or HipHop, the main-stream popular songs have been sounding more and more similar. There was an interview by a producer who co-produced VIXX's Scentist, saying that US record labels do not want any song that sound "experimental". So there was no chance the styles or motifs he wanted to use in his song will be accepted by US labels, meanwhile Korean companies are relatively more open-minded. Even so, Scentist didn't do well in Korea. At the end of the day there is nothing wrong with people liking whatever kind of music, but unfortunately some big companies dictate choices of those who mainly rely on popular trends, which is unhealthy. There are some people in Korea who voice their concerns about the major streaming sites showing so-called "real-time rankings" and presenting an option to play say top 10 songs. You can have a look at what melon charts look like for Kpop, and also Billboard. Whether Kpop songs there are all similar to those in Billboard can be debatable, but there aren't much variety in either of those. Having said that, one can argue "popular" music scene has always like that, and I think I agree to a degree, although to me it seems like it is getting worse. It doesn't matter to me in the slightest personally, because I never listen to songs based on any charts. But the public more or less have been relying on the popular charts from the streaming sites (or worse, from the radio stations) so not-so well known artists have a tougher task to get their songs heard. Which is kind of ironic, because it is more easier than ever to listen to songs of different styles all over the world. Then again, some people predicted that Internet will make people more close minded so maybe it shouldn't be surprising. So that is where I am coming from.

Yes! Indie songs are great! People should check them out more, that way there wont be a ruckus like how Shaun dominated the charts. People staying salty only cos he is not well known but managed to beat out popular artists. Like, maybe if he shot to the top for a moment like Nilo, it could be manipulation. But given how consistent Shaun is ranking on top of the charts, i dont believe his company has that much money to throw out to manipulate the charts for so long. It is definitely because the song is well liked by the masses, at least in Korea that is. There are many more gems in the indie genre but sadly, most international fans dont bother to give them a chance :(

@Siyeon's Pants: Yeah interesting point about Shaun's song is, although I don't like the song that much, I could feel that it is written just like the songs that are very popular (that is why I personally don't like it lol). If that song was released by a famous group or artist, many people will say it is a bop. But it is sung by someone they did not know, and people think something must be fishy. It is an ironically sad situation in several aspects lol. Another example, which is kind of reverse of Shaun situation, is a song called Adult (어른) by a singer called Sondia. It is an OST song of the Korean Drama "My Mister", and to me it is one of the best ballad songs that came out this year. Since IU is the main actress in the drama, when I first heard the song I thought it was sung by IU, and I was surprised that it was not. Their voices are indeed similar to each other. And I think that, if that song was released by IU, it would have stayed at the top of the charts for a while. IU actually sung that song during her recent concert.

Western pop music is roughly 5 years ahead of Kpop. For example when BoA debut in 2001 she was the “Britney Spears” of Kpop, and Britney debut in 1997 ish. Big Bang debut 2006 and they had so much resemblance to B2K of early 2000s. A lot of first generation Kpop groups was inspired by spice girls and back street boys. And last but not least... BTS reminds me so much of NSync 😂 😂 😂 Here’s another #takemeback worthy Kpop you should check out: a Kpop duo (they’re sisters) their group name is called Shyne.. this song was my jam back in the day. They were big... but suddenly they disappeared. From what I heard, they stopped singing and instead focused on their education. kzbin.info/www/bejne/roC4dotta8esiqM
