I realize this comment is two years old but, hey, I'm reading back through the series and came here for the comments. John is a nice and goofy guy, but he (and everyone really) starts to grow up. They start having to deal with some fucked up shit. John found himself face to face with the architect of everyones misery. At first he was just gonna 'kick his ass' or whatever, but ANYONE who has ever really been in a fight (I mean real fuckin' fight) will tell you... once you're in the shit: you just start swinging. This wasn't some super powered battle of titans. It wasn't a contest of badass kung-fu masters. This was a battle of equals who had no idea how to actually fight. It was rolling around on the ground biting and punching. He gained the upper hand and John just did what any untrained person would do. You win the fight. You may not be actively trying to kill them... but you don't stop till you're sure the other guy isn't gonna get back up and start shit again. To do that, you gotta hurt them. Bad. So bad they just curl up and surrender. In the moment it isn't a question of good or evil or even rational choice. It's just... instinct.

Can we take a minute to apreciate How well written gamzee and his classpect are? The way a bard of rage functions is that it "causes rage to be destroyed or causes destruction through rage". When Dave sent him the icp video, he became enraged and created the Harlequin plushie in johns dreamself room, therefore causing the events that led to bec noir, he also went on a killing spree on the meteor, and karkat, a usually angry Guy, stopped being angry because he was worried about gamzee killing him. Because of terezis rage towards gamzee, she became faygoholic and weak willed, alowing herself to get controlled by aranea and stabbing herself. During [S] game over, everyone around gamzee was filled with rage, and that got them killed, karkat fell into a Pit of lava, kanaya got obliterated, rose got stabbed, dave got ganged up on by the two angry dogs and the condence killed aranea out of rage. John, roxy and dirk(?) only survived because they werent around gamzee. Gamzee fufills his classpect requirements flawlessly and its scary

I just want to point out that aranea was able to mind control terezi, even thought vriskas mind control couldn't. It's either because she became so depressed she lost her will, or because aranea had stronger mind control as well. After watching Rex Duodecim Angelus and looking back at this flash, I realized both started with Karkat in a way. In game over, Karkat was the first to die here. In Rex Duodecim Angelus, he was the first to make a move and mark. Idk if it's just a coincidence, but it makes me think of a leader. When the leader is shot down, the rest start going down too. But when the leader goes for the move, the rest follow.
