TRyan, this is a great video - thank you. The last time I was inside my Super E KZbin didn't exist but now all the mechanics I could possibly trust have moved away or moved on so it is up to me. I am using S&S Instruction 51-1012 for my shovelhead. I can ride the bike for about an hour and then it goes to hell popping and whatnot and then it runs fine after cooling for a half hour or so. I like to be methodical, but I had to ride the damn bike for an hour and then be stranded each time I tried a repair and that got old so now I am redoing everything that might be the offending part and I don't care if I identify the cause or not. Thanks again TRyan, you are a great mechanic and a great cinematographer!

I have to thank you very much for this great comment .It was nice way to start my day this morning .I like your plan of attack to fix the issue with your bike .The symptom you mention is an interesting one to try and diagnose. I will be heading to my local shop tomorrow and I will run it by the head mechanics to see if they can offer any insight . Hopefully they will have something to offer .I'll get back to you in this thread with their responces .With any luck we might be able to nail this one down . Hey Thomas sorry for the delay in getting back to you.After talking to a few of the mechanics at the shop there was one suggestion that if the rockers were out of adjustment the bike could run ok for a bit until it heats up and then it would run progressively worse .Then once cooled could start and run until the cycle repeats ..Another suggestion was if the battery was brand new and the charging system was no good the bike could run until.the battery drained.And as it's a brand new battery they can come back to life after an hour or so and have enough charge to run the bike for a short while again But that scinerio only works a few times .Hopefully you get the bike sorted our soon so you can actually get out and ride .If you get a chance let me know how you end up correcting the problem. @@TRyanLearnBikes Hi TRyan, thank you for the research (thanks to your friends, too!), the battery/charging system is OK and the rockers are original, mounted on new S&S heads - I don't know why the guy didn't get new rockers, but that's the way he did it. Kinda noisy, but I haven't had any trouble with them since way before this latest problem. The carb insulator block that came off looked thin to me compared to my 1990's (?) memory of putting the carb on new. I got a new block and it was 3/8" thick vs. the 1/4" block I just took off. The extra turns on the carb/manifold bolts were enough to make the end of the bottom bolt seat tight against the fuel bowl as well as the bolt head seating against the manifold. It only made sense that the bolt would stretch under heating and allow a vacuum leak. But that wasn't it; I was stranded again for another half hour while the bike cooled. I really thought I had it figured out. Today I removed the points, etc. and tore out the advance weights and one of the springs was broken and the fancy needle bearings on the weight swivel pins were rusty with a little orange goo on them. I don't know why it ran well cold. Maybe it got stuck in full advance when it got hot, even at low rpm (not enough spring tension.) Parts should be here in time for next weekend. I'll keep you posted.

Quick question maybe you could help me out. When I reinstall the accelerator pump spring and nut, it feels a little loose. Is that supposed to have tension on it while at idle. Or only when the rod pushed on it?

@josephshealey Hi Josh . With mine in hand as an example, it does not feel loose at all .There is continuous spring tension on that pump actuator assembly. It can be a bit fiddly to get both halves and that spring in between to fit under tension. I'm guessing you may have to have a close look at how that spring is locked into those two pieces.I know I didn't do a very good job of shooting that part up close .Looking back ,I should have isolated the view more effectively. Hope that helps .If you get a chance let me know how you make out solving the issue. Cheers 🍻

Another question. Everything I read says it needs 2 cables. One push one pulls. My bike only has 1 and I'm pretty sure the guy who had it was riding it like that. Will not have the push cable not make it run right?

@@waterguy5924 ..The solution I used on that particular job was call "Shooters Choice Ultrasonic Cleaning Solution "Purchsed from Amazon .It worked well but was fairly expensive at around 60 us dollars for 1 gallon . There are many other alternatives out there for sure ,each with pros and cons .I'm still searching for the gold standard ..that may be a good video idea to put together. Thanks for the idea ..cheers

I'm sure you'll do fine .The only finiky bit is that double spring within a spring on the shaft that closes the butterfly valve .Pay close attention to how they fit together when you take it apart. A fresh carb rebuild should make a huge difference if your accelerator pump isn't right .Pay close attention to how the compound spring set up goes together on the butterfly valve shaft .It can be a little tricky sometimes to reinstall , but if you take a good look at it and even take a few close-up pictures before you disassemble it, you'll be fine. @@TRyanLearnBikes I finally rebuilt my Super E carb. Your video got me through it but I had a hell of a time with throttle shaft and actuator springs per your warning, lol. While installing the actuator spring, the Throttle shaft spring kept coming off. I found it easier to install the throttle plate after installing the throttle shaft spring, then install the actuator spring. The plate kept the throttle shaft and spring in place. It was a bear to charge the actuator spring but I was successful. My fingertips definitely feel it.

Thanks for that great instruction video! I think this sets me up to tackle the job myself. My bike (twincam) runs miserably, I suspect a faulty or worn accellerator diaphragm and probably dirty jets and what not. It also tends to stall on idle when the engine is warm. I have the same ultrasonic cleaner, so even that is here to do the job. Cheers, mate!

This video helped me rebuild my super e today. Picked up a custom bile thats all s&s and it started with a jump but poured fuel from the carb and ran poorly. Upon dissassembly i found the accelerator pump diaphraghm kinked up which explained the leak and running issue. But the very old dark piss colored fuel didnt help lol. Only did the basic rebuild as the carb was in otherwise good shape. First time working with an s&s product. Cant wait to get the bike back together and hear it scream.

Recently picked up an 80 shovelhead and it had a s&s carburetor I have not had an s&s carburetor since the early eighties and back then, they did not have an accelerator pump or at least the one I didn't and I never could get used to the roll-on of the throttle... But after cleaning this one..this one seems to be pretty good

What a fantastic production, 2 thumbs up. One question. There is nowhere a video I can find, that shows how to replace the accelerator pump nozzle. I wanted to clean mine and it broke of when I tried to remove it, that's when I found out it is pressed in. I can't get the rest of it out, so I guess I will have to get a replacement bowl, but then still will need to install a new nuzzle into that. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Data Android , thanks very much for the positive feedback. Sorry to hear of your issue involving the pump nozzle. As you have discovered it is a press fit and typically not removable. I'm guessing a replacement bowl should come with a nozzle in place .If thats not the case a skilled machinist may have some insight on how to solve this one. Thanks very kindly Yaya .Thats a good question. I think alot depends on the size and weight of the air filter arrangement you have .As its a short body carb if you use a lightweight breather you would likely be ok without a support if you like the uncluttered look .But I use one on my bike because its out of sight and adds an extra bit of strength

I see you dropping into ball bearings when I got mine on my bike the ball bearing was on the bottom of the spring which I seen in a video that the ball bearing should go on the top but I did not know there was another ball bearing..

Anytime I put parts like this together,just a light wipe of oil works wonders and the Teflon past used in this video is a product used in fitting natural gas lines together. It's really not imperative to use .I just used it to create a super air tight seal that is easily removable when required. But really you're fine without it .Hope this helped. Cheers 🍻

Hi Nathalie ,That spring set up can be a little finicky .I regret not doing a better job of filiming the process and explaining it better . You are not the only person to have asked me about it . Its just patience and trying to get a close look at it pre disassembly helps a bit too . I wish I had a better answer for you . I struggled with it also but like I said a little bit of patience and persistance will solve it .Good luck ahead I'm sure you'll get it .

Excellent and detailed video. Two questions; parts diagram shows the spring to sit under the accelerator diaphragm, you put it on top. Also the ball bearing is shows as under the spring as well. Are the diagrams wrong?

Hi Sol ,Thank you very much for your kind comment and good questions . I certainly don't want to tell you that any diagram you have may be wrong .But during the dissasembly process in the video starting at about the 1:36 mark you can see the original position of the springs we're talking about .The diaphragm spring is clearly between the cap and the diaphragm .And the other small springs sit underneath the ball bearings . You can see during the assembly process it is just the same .Hopefully that helps .Good luck ahead .Cheers

For that particular job I used a product called "Shooters Choice Ultrasonic Cleaning Solution " It was available on Amazon but it was out of stock last time I checked. There is another product called "Ultrasonic cleaning solution for carburetors fuel injectors and other auto parts " it is in stock on Amazon right now and costs about 60 $ for 1 gallon. I think that tube you're referring to is a vent and it isn't one to be tinkered with .It's press fit and best not to mess with .

Neither does S&S, they said their archives dont go back that far. They could tell me who they sold them to, but nothing about them. Very weird, I was just wondering if I needed bigger jets. @bryanjh73 Well Bryan when it comes to fine tuning a carb properly it seems to be a bit of a black art .Anytime I talk to guys in the know it seems like they always kind of agree that it's sort of a trial and error strategy to really dial it in . They'll go up a size , try it out .Then go down a size , try it out . Plus they're always reading how the plug looks and messing with the air screw or fuel screw depending on the carb .I wish I could tell you exactly what would would work for you but I'm not that well schooled to give solid advice .On my bikes I try and find what feels the best and look to get opinions on the settings I'm using from guys who race .They have done all the heavy lifting and can usually steer you in the right direction quickly. So if you can get to a dragstrip or a road course and ask around You'll find most of those guys are fantastic and willing to share .Hope this long winded answer helps .Good luck .

Ok now thats pretty funny my friend . I know I could have taken more time and shot that sequence much better than I did.My apologies. It's a hard to explain verbally as well .But with one spring inside the other .if you really slow down the video you will be able to see the start point at the 2:25 mark in the video.Try and match the spring orientation as seen before its taken apart. I think I’m within 180* of getting it right. Should the butterfly be a bear to open? Or about the same tension as with just the throttle side spring?

@@chrisrhoy Hi Chris ,thanks very much for the comments. I fell short with detailing the spring set up for sure. Regarding the butterfly being a bear to open, well I'd say its normal to be fairly strong to open if you're trying to actuate via the cable guide using your hand only .Once the cable is attached there's a mechanical advantage gained by the pulley effect from both the throttle spool and the cable guide itself so it would feel like a normal throttle does .Note that the throttle should snap shut strongly when you release your grip ..thats very important, it shouldn't be lazy returning to zero .You need to take the time to get it right , I'm sure with a little patience you will be able to get it sorted .Please let me know how you make out .Cheers 🍻

Hey my friend I get what you're saying .Its a delicate blend of delivering info without dragging the video tempo to a boring pace . The option to slow the video is a solution I figured most people use if they want to have a more mellow experience .Not sure if you know but if you click on the gear icon in the lower right an option to adjust the playback speed pops up and you can set it to a more comfortable tempo for you.Hope that helps .Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment .Cheers to you good sir .

@@TRyanLearnBikes yes, if that was explained in the video along with any other pertinent information you would have made one of the best videos on s&s carb rebuild I have seen. To the point, brief, and informative. Too many videos, including the s&s video, doesn’t show the spring winding which is imperative to rebuilding an s&s carb. Another quick point is the spring and ball bearing check valve only going into one of the two accelerator pump holes, winding the accelerator pump side spring onto the axle before inserting the axle, and ensuring the axle is put in correctly so the screw countersink is facing out. I’ve never rebuilt a carburetor, but you learn quickly when your bike won’t run until you get it done and those things would have been invaluable to me and would have made this video perfect.

Regarding the fit of the plate into the arm .I did notice mine was pretty snug too .Yours may have a fit tolerance that could benefit from applying a bit of heat to the arm and putting the plate into your freezer for a while before you assemble them together . Sure It has the order the parts are assembled but if you don’t already know exactly how everything sits or faces where springs latch etc… you may get a fraction of a second glimpse at how something may fit together but mostly it’s just on to the next part. Might as well had saved yourself some time and made a list and posted that.
