I'm a ski patroller and found this extremely helpful, it was easier to listen to an 8 minute vid, then to read it in my OEC book. Not to mention your much nicer on the eyes and explained it better!

If you do have atleast 30 breaths a minute then you move to pulse. If less than 30 you stop there, they are a red tag.

In my experience, it is important to add a fifth color, Blue, for Expectant ( those who will die no matter how much attention they receive). These patients may be breathing, have a pulse, and and as hard as it may be they are not salvageable due to massive trauma, particularly open head wounds, severe blood loss, penetrating objects requiring extensive extrication. In a SHTF/WROL situation where definitive care is unavailable more victims will need to be written off in order to save others.

Great video, thanks. I have participated in Mass Casualty Drills for Trains, Plains, Stores and I think the hardest thing is to move on and keep the time frame in mind, normally you have a mindset to help all you can no matter the outcome but in a Mass Casualty you have to keep in mind what is the Overall outcome, save or not save (Already Gone) 1 or save 10. Hope I explained my thought correctly. Take care and glad you introduced your channel to me.

Good job. Sometimes it depends on how much help you have to work on patients. I Keep an eye on kids- they change so fast..from walking wounded to dropped off to yellow in a few minutes.

Black is for those who have already expired, and need no attention until the clean-up begins. Blue is for those who are expected to die, either immediately or in the short term. They are not yet dead and may still be conscious and screaming in pain and though you can be of little benefit to them, you may be of some comfort and, if you have the resources (personnel and supplies) you could potentially ease their suffering, particularly if you have any opiate painkillers.

There is no "blue" tag and you donʻt give opiate pain killers. You tag them based off the START algorithm and Keep going until you every patient is tagged.

Diminished ability to provide care, as would occur in a SHTF/WROL situation, or in a remote location, or when the sole responder in a disaster situation like a tornado or earthquake, when definitive care is either unavailable or extremely delayed, does not equate to being uncaring. Our basic principals and values require the opposite. IMO.

Interesting video. I see someone who keeps referring to a blue tag but I'll stick to standard protocols as you could write someone off who could be salvageable and I don't want that on my conscience. Thanks for the refresher :-D

is a zombie outbreak classified as a mass casualty incident? If so should i try to treat a person bitten by/ or accidently ingested the blood of a zombie?

A mild dose of MS / IM goes a long way toward making the end peaceful. In any scenario we have to attempt to maintain our humanity and to remain humane. Get their name and info, record it and take down their last words for their loved ones. If you'd want somebody to do it for you, you should do it for anyone else. Even if all you can do is put one of the walking wounded (Green Tag) witth them to hold their hand, it's something.
