Just an extra information I've found searching about Krasznahorkai: «'Baron Wenckheim’s Homecoming' is the latest Krasznahorkai novel to reach English readers, in a typically extraordinary translation from Ottilie Mulzet. It represents, as the author recently told The Paris Review in his Art of Fiction interview, the conclusion of a tetralogy: "I’ve said it a thousand times that I always wanted to write just one book. I wasn’t satisfied with the first, and that’s why I wrote the second. I wasn’t satisfied with the second, so I wrote the third, and so on. Now, with Baron, I can close this story. With this novel I can prove that I really wrote just one book in my life. T h i s is the book-'Satantango', 'Melancholy', 'War and War', and 'Baron'. This is my one book."»

The communist regime was not as restrictive in Hungary by 1985, but didn't fall until 1989. Nice review. I enjoyed the structure of the novel, the characters, and the challenge of reading this work. Definitely post-modern in flavor, punctuated by the novel writing itself over at its end to start the tale over again. The book has lots of religious allusions (the most obvious being the title), which I found interesting.

It's wild to me that since I'm more knowledgeable about Tarr's seven hour epic, I assumed the book would be 1K+ pages. After your review and realizing the novel is a slight 300+ pgs, I wonder if for Tarr it was akin to trying to film The Crying of Lot 49, where sure the source material is short-ish, but it's dense AF, and there's no other option but to explore every cranny to convey it's depth and breadth.

Don't worry, it feels like a thousand pages.
