I'm using RGB where applicable, the only thing I'm in the process of modding is an N64 because it's more convenient for my CRT TV than s-video is. also because I hate the anti-aliasing on that thing. My NES is still using composite video with a home-made scart cable that sends the audio to both the left and right channels. It's 50hz (PAL) here, so I think if we can't have decent performing retro games, we ought to at least have a good image quality.

Fortunately I was able to get my setup pretty much completed before I had kids and had a little disposable income. I went with a scart setup and did some mods on my SNES mini and n64. I've got a few systems running on Svideo. I can't tell a huge difference between svideo and rgb. The difference between composite and svideo and rgb is huge. Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to more videos!

i know this is 5 years old, but i dont blame you for thinking that. It was developed alongside super-vhs developed by JVC in the late 1980's for high end consumer tv's. VHS remained king, and then DVD took over so it became quickly obsolete.

S-Video is the ultimate sweet-spot between quality and price. For pre-HD generations of consoles, it's definitely good enough. Component or RGB will give you that extra bit of oomph but usually at a much higher cost. The one exception I make is enjoying Dreamcast on a CRT monitor with VGA for 480p, but that's a treat and I only do it because of 480p.

I actually still have and use a 1990 zenith CRT that we have had since back then. It actually has an S-video input (the tv menu calls it "Y/C". I wish i knew back in the day that you could hook a super nintndo up do that when you have the right cable and get a better image. Its a shame that port got wasted all those early years but I used it in 2002 to play DVDs through the s-video port

S Video is basically hi def on a CRT. I used to play Madden at home on an HDTV and when i went to my friends house, he only had the trinitrons. It was frustrating because you couldn't see when your receiver would make a break on his route on the CRT, but with S Video you could! It quite literally was almost indistinguishable from my HDTV at the time. If you're looking for retro tvs nowadays make sure you get one with S Video!

9 years ago I was playing Xbox 360 on a Panasonic Flat TV Plasma. I used the normal AV cables since Xbox 360 didn't have HDMI. One day I opened the Xbox box to get the manual after having the Rings of death and found the component cables and wondered what is it for. So I took them and checked the TV and I was shocked the they match the colors so i plugged right away. Also I remember it having a small switch between HD and normal. I couldn't believe my eyes how beautiful it was. Unbelievable difference. Even though I didn't know how they work or what they are called it just happened. 9 years later I just learned about them know and its a blessing to live through all the technological advancement and see how big the gap since then. 4K gaming is the norm today with 60 fps. So yeah big jump

I did some more tests with S-Video compared to hdmi on digital tvs and I don't know what it is about S-Video but it gives less motion blur when compared to hdmi. I'm convinced that gaming on a digital TV from Atari 2600 to Playstation 5 is better with a digital TV with a good S-Video port because it gives less motion blur and it looks good being still too. I'm convinced that S-Video is the way to go. Even downscaling with the modern consoles from hdmi to S-Video is better with less motion blur. Now a analog CRT it doesn't matter being that there is no detectable blur from the human eye but S-Video is definitely the way to go for gamers that want to play on digital flatscreens more comfortable with the clearer motion image (less blur) than what hdmi does (more motion blur compared to S-Video).

I just got a trinitron for my game room. My Saturn is hooked up through s video on it, all other stuff is composite. Would the snes and n64 be that much sharper on a CRT too?
@PK1312
@PK1312 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. The SNES and N64 both output 240p, which a lot of modern HDTVs treat as 480i and mess up. I'd definitely say if you already have a CRT it's definitely worth it to play both those systems on it. (Note that the N64 actually does some antialiasing on the hardware itself, so even over s-video on a CRT you might not get the same kind of "sharpness" out of the system as you can out of, say, the SNES, but you'll still get better colors and less noise out of s video. plus, the cables are cheap)

@@ShamoaKrasieski-xm4ze But do brand name s-video SNES/N64/GCN cables exist? I mean, you have to get the ones with a very specific Nintendo connector, and I doubt there is a big enough market for a known manufacture to produce those cables. Amazon just has a bunch of random brands. Some seem fairly well reviewed, but I wouldn't assume there's anything high quality about them... hmm... idk.

Thanks so much! I'm looking at building a DIN-5 to S-Video monitor cable for my Atari 800 because along with composite video, its monitor port offers separate luma and chroma outputs. I used to have s-video on all my consoles back in the day. It was very impressive. As I moved to digital, I ended up with the exact same setup you describe here. The switch + the s-video to HDMI box. Honestly, I had no choice as my TV's did not have composite (they had component, but getting a switch for those is nigh impossible) Thing is, I'm not very happy with the results. Its all well and good when everything is static, but get these artifacts when the anything moves. Its like the even and odd scan lines are slightly out of sync (probably because of the interlaced signal). I find that very annoying. I'm now getting a new OLED TV and it does have a composite in. I'm going to try and see if the loss of clarity is preferable to these motion artifacts to my eyes and will report back

I have an S-video cable that my N64 and SNES share, and the one I ordered for my original Xbox is about to arrive. I plan on getting one for my PlayStation/PS2 to share! I have a 4-input S-video switch that all of these can use. I realize that Xbox and PS2 output component, but I only have one component port on my CRT TV, and that's being used by my Wii. S-video is good enough for me. Perhaps I'll get an input switch that goes up to component, but good component cables are pricier than the good S-video cables. I think I'm happy with S-video.

Back in the early 2000s or mid 2000s, I remember having this s video to rgb cable . Not sure what I had in the computer at the time but Id plug the svideo into the back of my tower (into the gpu i assume?) and then plugged my ps2 into the rgb. Then I had some sort of "tv program" on my computer that let me play my ps2 inside of windows. For the life of me I cant remember the name of that program but lately ive been thinking hmm, I wonder if that would be a viable alternative to getting a capture card to stream console games.

I used to think that RGB Scart or RGB through component was the best way to play retro consoles until I started getting good at fine tuning old crts and lcds (flatscreens) to look the best and compared RGB (fine tuning) to S-Video (fine tuning) and so far S-Video has won every time. I'm not sure if its because S-Video has less saturated colors (and gives more room to fine tune) but I play all my consoles with S-Video if possible now and RGB scart or component second if S-Video is not available on a console. In my opinion S-Video at its best can look better than RGB. I know supposedly S-Video is taking the picture from RGB but S-Video looks better when both images are fine tuned. The colors look better in S-Video and S-Video has a cleaner image in motion. S-Video with a good hi quality gold plated cable gives the same sharpness and brightness as hi quality gold plated scart and gold plated component cables but the difference is the color which might look better at a first glance in RGB with the TV's standard or reset options but when fine tuning for RGB Scart or RGB Component and S-Video. S-Video looks better and even the color looks better and in motion S-Video looks better. Now for the ones who dont have access to S-Video or RGB Scart or RGB Component. Remember if you are using Composite. A hi quality gold plated composite cable will look a lot better than the original cable and the same with RF. I have a hi quality gold plated rf cable that looks better than what the original consoles rf cable does image and sound wise. But to keep it simple Hi Quality Gold Plated cables are the best.

@@RETROGAMINGARTS I guess what im trying to say was S-Video gives me more room to make adjustments on my TVs then RGB and after the adjustments S-Video looks better IMO then RGB adjusting. Looking at both with the standard settings RGB looks a little more colorful but when I fine tune both the color actually looks better in S-Video and also when looking at both in motion S -Video looks slightly cleaner IMO. The only thing I can say to be in RGBs favor is that I dont have a TV that has a Scart Input so getting RBG im using converters. Where S-Video im going straight into the TV into a S-Video input. Regardless of how expensive upscalers or converters used I have found that less conversion is best for a cleaner image and some LCD Flatscreens have no noticeable lag and put out a better image in S-Video then RGB with conversion upscaler boxes like the Framemeister and RetroTink. I have a Emerson 40" flatscreen w/ a S-Video port that not only produces a better picture using that S-Video port than using S-Video with the Framemister but also produces a better image when comparing to using the Framemeister using RGB Scart. Also there is no noticeable lag when just going straight to the S-Video input from S-Video out from the systems I have tested Saturn, Super Nintendo (1 chip and original) and a modded Sega Genesis. Maybe its the S-Video cord im using but no RGB conversion I have tried has looked better than S-Video with Hi Quality gold plated cable going straight into my Emerson 40" Flatscreen model LCD401EM2F. RGB looks good on it as well but not better than S-video especially after fine tuning them both with the TV (making the RGB conversion look the best) and (making S Video look the best) which S-Video always wins after comparing. This has happened with other TVs I own as well its just that the Emerson beats out all my TV's including my CRT's.

Well it modulates at a very specific frequency that the tv normally has to extract from the composite signal. The intensity of the frequency is how colorful it is and the phasing is what color it is. There is a “color burst” before the line starts going across the CRT that it uses to sync up with the phasing of the color signal. Composite/S-video/RF do not use the YPbPr color space, they use the YIQ color space, which was made because of the limitations of bandwidth, but luckily is very cleverly built around the limitations of the human eye. Y is luma (B/W image), I is how orange or teal something is, Q is how green or how purple something is. I is in phase with the color burst while Q is 90 degrees off. The reason this was done is because it was much harder for vacuum tube TVs to correctly deconstruct the Q signal, so they decided to make the signal colors that our eyes have trouble picking up detail.

S-video on lower resolution consoles really brings out the jaggies, as well as the color. I think the slight blur from Composite video makes for a smoother image. It's all being played 6 to 10 feet from the TV anyways. Does it matter?

Now my VCR is connected to my tv via Composite (NES) and S-VIDEO (VCR) I'm very interested to what happens when I use this converter box via component to my sony trinitron CRT TV? 🤔 I wonder if there will be if ANY improvements or if it will even work.

Well, maybe this is just stupid nostalgia talking, but to me the composite video, which admittedly is much less sharp, it kind of compliments the old games, kind of makes them seem softer, less harsh and digital. Just an opinion, and doesn't apply to everything.

I was so intrigued to see what the comparison and then you used a modded console. :-/ I wish more retro gamer channels would show things in original form some the majority of us without mods or special hooks ups could see what’s up. Seems there’s always a twist in the end. Almost every channel!!! Why couldn’t you just use a Super Nintendo or Dreamcast? One that already has svideo hooked up to a regular CRT? Am I missing something?
