Love my 460V X-frame model and use the cast bullet muzzle brake exclusively as jacketed bullets work in it also. The 5 inch muzzle brake equipped barrel is my favorite revolver. Lehigh Defense 45 Colt loads work in the long cylinder of the 460 S&W magnum too.

I know a guy who keeps one of these in his desk. He runs a car dealership and he has actually had to pull it out a few times when people came to steal cars. Never had to fire it, thankfully, but most people freak out the second they see it. Rough part of town lol Also, you should do a video on concealing that beast of a revolver, even if it would be sort of a joke. Like when you show off the holsters, show us what it would take to actually hide on. I packed a six-inch N-Frame once (What was I thinking?) so I'm curious if the shorter barrel would offset the larger X-Frame.
@TheOl19119 жыл бұрын
+Sedan57Chevy My god - someone actually uses this for defensive work!??!?!!? I already had a cop say this revolver should be banned. Stay tuned on the next vid where I show a concealment holster for it, hahahahaha. Totally not practical for hip carry. Its just too heavy. Chest holster is the way to go with something this heavy/big. 6" N-Frame, dang man! I talk to a armored car guy here who carries a 5" N-Frame in a 200AW (M&P R8) as his duty gun. He says it carries nice.

He did have a super Redhawk alaskan for a while in .454 that he did have to fire once, as a warning shot, and after that he went up to the .460 for more intimidation, although I don't think he actually loads full-load .460s in it (probably just .454's).

Picked up one of these a month ago. Went to my local shop wanting a $600 92fs and walked out spending $1300 on this monster. Actually had the salesman who was new to the shop trying to talk me out of it. Then the manager who knows me quite well saw me with it and said, yep that's what I thought you'd be looking at. I love my super redhawk Alaskan in 44 mag but wanted something with a little more punch. Kinda puzzled a salesman tried to talk me out of spending money for once.

I would use the .460, you don't get a fast car to save on gas and go the speed limit. The .45 colt is a good strong round but your not using the gun to its potential, it seems like your wasting it. The .45 probably will foul up your barrel and give you more to clean.

@Lunchman.d9 жыл бұрын
Wow it looks nicer than the 460 I was telling you about.. I think the unfluted cylinder is cool because every one I've seen has fluted. They must be thinking unfluted can stand up to those hot 460mag loads a little longer than fluted, because this performance center version is definitely designed to be more of a high volume shooter than the longer barrel hunting versions that get shot few times per season you know? And the front looks more streamlined.. the longer hunting versions with interchangeable weights hanging off look a little clunky. All in all it looks cool.. can't wait to see a range video with it
@looseballs19669 жыл бұрын
+tim d Just a little fyi for you tim, fluted or non-fluted has nothing to do with the strength of the cylinder" per say"(even though in theory the extra metal would be a tad stronger) as in that's is not really why they do it, it's just a looks thing really, as in some thinks it looks "better", not one 460 they build is made to be any more of a shooter than any other model, because when you are dealing with a cartridge capable of developing 65,000 psi (the same as the biggest magnum rifles), any gun that is not completely built for it will only take a couple shots to go to pieces (so to speak), performance center Smith guns are for the most part just more finely tuned, and more carefully hand assembled, with some differing cosmetics to set them apart on some models, from the mainline production ones, as for the "interchangeable weights" I can't think of any 460 they build that has that, but they most all, except this model here, have interchangeable muzzle brakes, and the very long (10-12-14 inch barreled models)have a barrel band type front site, that to the novice(not trying to call you a novice but if no one ever told you how would you know) may appear to be a weight, and I just happen to own 3 of the 460's ( the 5 inch, 8 3/8th's, and the 14inch models), I also own 2 of the 500's (the 10 and a half inch and the 8 3/8 inch models), I also own a pretty long list of other Smith's, so yes I am a Smith and Wesson revolver addict and know them pretty well lol, and bite your toungue lol "only shot a few times a year" Very much not so, I shoot mine a BUNCH, (gotta reload for them though) all season long, they are some of the absolute funnest guns to shoot that I own.
@Lunchman.d9 жыл бұрын
Yeah I meant the muzzle breaks.. the one I shot came with 3 of them and they did weigh substantially different. The 460's come with some type of performance center insignia on the case and paper manual, but I believe they are more like the pro series.. performance center parts but assembled on the main Smith n Wesson assembly line. He did a video on the pro series for another revolver. The one I shot was a 5" and all it had stamped on it was 460v, even the owner said it's not a true performance center model.. but the one in this video appears to be performance center that's why I was saying it's more of a shooter you know?
@Lunchman.d9 жыл бұрын
Shooting a bunch of times a year is one thing, but the performance center page for that model talks about "all day precision range shooting".. who would should a 460 all day? Hahahaa
@looseballs19669 жыл бұрын
tim d Well I tried to explain that to you but apparently you just know so much freaking more than someone who has shot one a freaking bunch ( I on the average shoot a hundred or so rounds at a range visit), and the short barreled thing is not the only performance center versions of the 460, ( my 14 inch is a performance center gun), I have a just a stellar idea for you, just maybe instead of jumping on the dip shit youtube ban wagon, and believing all the crap you hear on there, go out and experience one for yourself, the short barrel really doesn't "kick" as bad as many of these pussies on here would lead you to believe, and if so many of them took the time to learn how to shoot properly with the large high power type guns (many on here have no clue as to proper grip and how to manage recoil), rather than arguing with someone who knows what he's talking about, instead of being so freaking bull headed ( a trait that the younger generation and even so many others have in spades anymore, they all just seem to know everything about everything), well I'm done wasting any more time here with a bunch of dim wits that don't want to maybe learn just a tad, I'll just say that even the 38 special "kicks" hard in a light gun like the 340pd for example (but hell I just went out and shot mine a couple days ago, and when I got home realized that I had indeed shot nearly all of the full house hanloads that I load are about as hot as you dare put through that particular gun on the will it handle it basis alone, that amounted to 95 rounds, and on top of that 150 rounds of 38+p and I never suffered any ills as some would lead you to think with that gun would cause in that many shots) just another little fyi for you the only reason I don't shoot more of the 460 than about a hundred rounds a visit, even reloading the 300 grain XTP's and other components I use, still adds up to about $75 per 100 rounds, and my handloads are no wimpy reduced loads by the way, they are moving at damn near 2150 feet per second even out of the 8 3/8ths barrel, like I said before there is just something too fun about hitting a target at 100+ yards and seeing it destroy it as bad as little wimpy 44 magnum does at 20 (you know like the water melons and crap that guys do on here, but for me it is the 2 quart size cans of tomato and other juices that have gone past date), but that is fine, on second thought, yes they are too much recoil for mortal man to handle, so you better stick to your little baby gun 9mm's and such, not calling myself anything better than mortal man really, but if everyone else thinks they are so bad then that will make them more available for me to buy ( my goal is to own at least 1 of every model of 460 and 500 they make), so yep they are too much for you guys, so go buy a little piece of junk kelltech or hightech 380 or 9mm or something of the like, and leave the real guns for the real men. Oh by the way I live just about 1 mile from where I shoot and hardly a week goes by that I don't go shoot some sort of gun, and when the weather is good I often shoot every day at least a handfull of rounds through my current carry gun, and most of my shooting gear never leaves my car because I never know when the urge to shoot something will hit me, the running joke amongst my friends is I have more ammo and shooting supplies in my truck than the local sporting goods store LOL.
@Lunchman.d9 жыл бұрын
I didn't say anything about one kicking hard, and I don't own any 9mm or any "kelltech" guns. I only shot a 5" model, and it was not from the performance center. The 460 itself is overkill for pig hunting we do here and too expensive. Shotguns and revolvers like .357mag or .44mag work fine. Everything else I typed came off Smith n Wesson's website and from their own videos.

I wouldn't shoot the 460 mag rounds out of the 3.5 inch barrel, I don't think you have enough barrel to benefit from that cartridge. 45 colt+P and 454 Casull will do all you need. I have a 5 inch Ruger Super Redhawk Toklat in 454, I shoot Underwood 300gr XTP in 45 Colt+P at 1300 fps in mine. I can highly recommend that round for an all around hunting/woods defense ammo. I have shot the full power 454 Casull rounds from Buffalo Bore out of my Toklat as well as my buddy's 460 3.5 inch and I can honestly say the Smith handled the recoil better. Beautiful weapon! Great review.
@thepaisanokid27385 жыл бұрын
The performance centers have a nice tight barrel cylinder gap. Velocity loss is not as much as what you would think. I have this revolver as well as a 10.5 inch 460 performance center. My 10.5 is right at and slightly exceeding factory listed velocities. The 3.5 is generally only 100 fps slower than what's listed on the box. So you give up nothing in killing power. The 200 grain hornadys are fun at the range due to the blast and fire. 400 grain hardcasts better hold on!

Can someone explain what the 2pc barrel is for? Are these barrel burners, where you'd need a new one in a short amount of time?
@SolarEmp1re9 жыл бұрын
+Moto Rad Smith and Wesson says the 2 piece barrel gives better accuracy but in all honesty it's just cheaper to manufacture. No these are not barrel burners I've owned multiple big bore revolvers for years with no problems, barrel burners are usually small caliber, fast moving projectiles like .22-250, .221 fireball, .220 swift, etc..
@moto_rad9 жыл бұрын
Solar_Empire Thanks for that info! That is what I thought about barrel burners, a lot of powder and a little bullet. Wasn't sure if large powder volume applied to some big bore stuff would be, but as I figured and as you pointed out, it isn't.

I shot my buddy's.500 magnum and it wasn't even fun. The .460 seems more practical because of the various calibers you can shoot out of it. I was told by a gun shop owner you can also shoot .45 Schoffield out of the .460.
@SolarEmp1re9 жыл бұрын
+Dan Saracco you can shoot .460 (obviously), .454 casual, .45 long colt, and .45 Schofield. All these rounds are (virtually) identical accept for case length so think .357 magnum and .38 special. However the shorter the cartridge the longer the jump from cylinder to forcing cone which can affect accuracy.

As long as you ain't going after big ass elk or anything like that in Cali, snub nose length is not a problem for deer, pig and bear. 4 in barrel length minimum is required for elk, dinosaurs, and sperm whales.

+702CitizenArmory Yes - you truly need to double up on hearing protection if you shoot this thing indoors. Outdoor its OK but it is soooooooooo damn loud. LOL

S&W Performance Ceneters are notorious for crooked cockeyed barrel. Are you gonna do a video on checking your 460 for cockeyed or crooked barrel?

Definitely not a novelty gun. I just bought a .460 Performance Center 10.5" barrel. I've been shooting the shit out of it. I reload my own ammo so it's much cheaper than store bought ammo. I love shooting it and the reactions it gets from others at the range.

It would be cool to pair it with a rifle.

.460 just seems like S&W wanting to brag with a mostly useless cartridge. It would be better off in a rifle, but then again .45-70 has been around a very long time and can be loaded with up to 550gr hard cast which will go through tree trunks. There's a limit to what is honestly useable in handguns. S&W just wanted to be "the world's most....." with .45 cal and .50 cal. Well good for them. Except those X-frame guns are such clunky hunks of metal. They just leave all realm of handgun usefulness. Personally I'd be very happy with a SA or DA revolver in .45 colt which has been hot-loaded. Accomplish anything a pistol needs to accomplish. Everything else there is a rifle to use. As far as cylinder gap between the .45 Colt and the forcing cone? Not sure you'll deal with accuracy problems, but it will foul up the cylinder after a while. Also, gas pressure will move around the slug as it leaves the casing, before it enters the forcing cone and rifling. That will mean a loss of performance as it blows through the cylinder gap and disturbs the stability of the slug before it enters the barrel. How much? Not significant. The grungy cylinder will be something you'll need to brush. Same cylinder issues apply with .454 Casull firing .45 Colt, .357 Mag firing .38 spl. Anything that has a shorter case than is chambered in the cylinder.
