Wow man great job on those grips, I have the same grips and I sent my 686 back to Smith & Wesson to have it polished. I bought it stainless steel and it looks just like yours and i found some grips made in China with the Smith logo for $80.00. I can't find the receipt to get the name of the company but they are very well put together and with a high luster finish and the S& W LOGO. And they handle great, I got them off of E-Bay.

I didn’t have any luck with gungrip. I received set of walnut stocks and the fit was terrible on the left panel. Returned the and asked for a set of goncalo alves and those did not fit well either, the back strap was not fully covered by the panels. I suggest paying more for original s&w stocks

Looking forward to getting these on there I think it will make it my favorite thing to bring to the range.

These combat stocks are really nice. They feel and look just like the S&W originals. Hello you mentioned that you sand your stainless prior to polishing? I have polished with Mothers polish my brand new 686-6 it is a 3" with the wooden finger grip grips and it is bright & shiny but has hazing. Since it is a brand new gun I was nervous about polishing it but I was not satisfied with the look so what the heck! Is it possible to polish out the hazing without sanding? If I do sand what grit & kind of paper should I use. Also won't it wear through the coating of the gun? Any help & advice would be appreciated!
@mr2275cur2 жыл бұрын
Yes Sir, I usually wet sand my guns before polishing. All of my revolvers were used when I bought them. So i sand them primarily to remove scratches and wear mark, and to even out the finish. Plus, the wet sanding cuts down on polishing time. However, I believe the haze is coming from the very fine finishing marks created as S&W's brushed finish. If you're apprehensive about sanding you brand new gun, don't. You can continue to polish the gun, and it will reduce the marks enough to clear most of the haze away. But I've used 2000, 2500 and 3000 grit wet sanding before polishing to create a clearer, brighter finish, with no haze. You can use 4000, 5000 and 7000 grit for a more mirrored finish if you like. Just use good high quality paper and keep it wet; stay away from the cheap sand paper. And 686's are all SS; there is no coating to wear through. You're not going to hurt the gun doing any of this by and if you go slow and use good judgement. Sand paper grits of 1500 and higher are for polishing and finishing.
@kickit592 жыл бұрын
@@mr2275cur Thank you Sir! I appreciate the information! My biggest worry was wearing through the finish. Last night I spent a few hours hand polishing and it looks pretty good though a little hazing is still left. Since it's a new gun I think I will continue with the hand polish until I get it just a little bit better. My gun came with the factory wood Smith & Wesson finger groove grips. I waxed them multiple times with the old Hoppes wax cloth until it really brought out the full character of the wood. Anyhow the gun looks a lot nicer now but I will take another shot at polishing the stainless to really make this 686 pop! Thanks again for the outstanding information.
@mr2275cur2 жыл бұрын
@@kickit59 Man you are quite welcome. I'm glad you didn't give up on it. hand polishing takes time, but saves you some money and will yield great results if given the right amount of time and effort. @mr2275cur Жыл бұрын
The 686-6 is the current engineered version of the 686. The 686+ is a 7-shot variant of that gun. If your gun is a 7-shot 686 (686-plus) with wooden stocks, then it's probably a Deluxe or 3-5-7 variant. Which ever one it is, mechanically there're exactly the same. A new gun will be soldas a NEW gun. And a used gun will be sold as a USED gun. Plus a used gun will show signs of being used, especially if it's been shot.
