NYPD transitioned to the 9mm in 1993, we had the option of the S&W 5946, Glock and Sig, dont remember models. S&W 5946 very solid gun shoots great.

It was easy to carry on duty and off duty. We switched to the Sig P229, which was heavy to carry. Detectives had the option to carry the 6946 or a single stack version, I forget the model number.

Condolences about your grandfather that’s raw still. All my ppl have been gone. . The stuff will show up eventually. . Hang in. Some gun like that is what I am thinking about getting to carry rather than 365xl. Don’t carry safety or mag disconnect but that can usually be fixed up with no reliability issues. I like to leave everything stock. Car’s & everything. . If something breaks I put OEM back. Don’t shoot enough to break a gun. Probably not enough to clean them. Always something else to pay for or buy. Saw a bunch of these surplus recently with decocker 300ish. A steal I thought. Have nice old revolvers and all .great great grandfathers shotgun im tempted to sell. Don’t think its ever been shot. I m sentimental too but if I don’t find out exactly who’s shotgun it was, I could use a few grand. engraved 2 barrels & all . Too nice to really use. Prefer my dads franchi20 simi auto.have surplus 870 all decked out. anyway .. light & reliable killer little pistol there. The last of the good ol smiths touched by the good ol smiths. Enjoy & be safe. Grandpa is doing a lot better than us r now but still, keep your chin up.

The problem with these pistols, what really killed them, was they got a bad reputation very quickly when people realized just how inaccurate they are. Maybe they're fine for police who are mag dumping on a guy from 2 yards away. But my dad bought a 411 in 2000 that he got CHEAP, like $300 and it was NIB. I took it out to the range and couldn't hit even hit the paper with it!!! I adjusted the sights, nothing. Got closer, like 2 yards away, adjusted the sights again. Ok. Backed up to 10 yards, still couldn't hit the paper with it. It was just throwing rounds everywhere. Total, utter GARBAGE. Every other pistol I could keep everything in the X ring at 10 yards. My Browning Hi-power, my 1911, P38, Beretta 92, S&W model 57 and Walther P99. You name it. So the problem wasn't me. You gotta think, if they were as good as people say, they wouldn't have died out. People always come up with that "Glock killed it everyone wants plastic". I don't buy it. Did Glock kill the Sigs? Did it kill the Beretta 92? The CZs? 1911s are as popular NOW as ever before.

It isn’t the best far away handgun. Especially compared to the S&W 3913 (DA/SA) and the Beretta 92. Update: yeah it sucks compared to my Sig P226 even in .40. Shoots high and really isn’t a confidence builder the 6946. But the 6946 was my grandfather’s and was my pre ban carry in Massachusetts. It’s largely been replaced by my Sig P365 and 3913
