Ditto! I might even consider just a teeny weeny little bit then for me too but it's fine, really. Unfortunately that grip safety in the back makes it so you can't put a rubber sleeve on it to thicken it a bit....like I did with my 9mm Shield.
@wilycoyote9091

@@fjdubya5726 You might be able to cut out a bit of the rubber around where the grip safety was and it might still stay in place. Better yet I would add on some rubberized Talon grips without the back part that would cover up the grip safety. I can deal with the thinner grip as long as the distance to the trigger isn't too short. I have an original version Shield 9mm and put on a Houge grip sleeve and I can shoot that one well.

There’s a macho factor in firearm opinion-making, as most U-tube reviewers have firearms like Popeye and big tats to match, or XXL hands like H45. I’m 75, mangled my dominant hand as a dumb youth, have never been able to manage a semiautomatic slide with that hand, so have to switch, wasting time. There are plenty of other people with grip issues as well, so kudos to S & W for addressing this issue. I already have the EZ9, but find the low capacity unappealing.

I have owned this firearm for 2 months and the pistol fits my hands perfectly, no issues with grip safety and no issue's with regular thumb safety. I just mine yesterday at the Pittsburgh show for under $480. And it's coming with an extra 3 x 13rnd mags from S&W Freedom Days Rebate. Last August 2022, I bought the Shield Plus OR Bugout kit and having mags that interchange sounded great after they released the Equalizer on the market. So last years Shield Plus OR kit came with 3 extra 13 rnd mags, and a bugout bag and the stock 2 mags with the gun once being 10 and the other being 13. Now, I have an Equalizer, a Shield Plus, 9 x 13 rnd mags, 2 x 10 rnd mags with one having a Pearce grip extension, and 1x 15 rnd, a Maglula speed loader, and a bugout bag and med kit for $949.00 including both specials in a 12 month period. Unbelievable savings with S&W. I'm an older Vet. I'm 5'6" and had both hand worked on. Around 50yrs old now and kept the military love for this long. I love these products offered today.

Its always said with these kind of guns "great for old people, arthritis, etc" and thats great and all, but your gun being easy to manipulate is never a bad thing. You never know what situation you'll be in when you have to rack your slide, that being easy to do will always be an advantage.

The thumb safety is exactly why I bought it, so it could be loaded. It’s probably just me, having learned firearms in the military and it’s just ingrained in my head and muscle memory ‘safety on’ ‘safety off’. Just my personal preference.

I have been watching this channel for years and always appreciate the honest perspective given in the reviews. I am 80 years old and am fortunate to have put together a wonderful collection of firearms. I have literally tried several dozen handguns to use for carry (The Golden Age Hickok45 speaks of.). I have the double whammy of arthritis and neuropathy and tend to like all metal handguns. I still look the guns like the 365 for carry. Oddly the 365XL mentioned in this review was an absolute disaster for me. I could not shoot it well and it actually caused pain in my trigger finger that went up my forearm. Probably the anticipation of pain caused the poor shooting performance. Reluctantly I finally scrapped the 365. After all of the experimentation I wound up with two variations of the Shield Plus, a 3.1 inch and a 4.0 inch Performance Center Model. I shoot both of them well and they cause me no pain. Because of this I added the Equalizer to the mix. Easy for me to manipulate and shoot well. I am in the process of teaching my four grandsons to shoot and this gun works well because it is easy to manipulate. I really like the remarks made at the end of the video stating that everyone is different in what works well for them. The criticisms of the Equalizer made here are all valid but in spite of that, for me it has been a good choice. Keep up the honest reviews, and your great displays of shooting.

These are decent shooters. Mine groups well, but it's hitting about 3" low from my POA, which is a major adjustment for my shooting (30 feet) and is a little weird. Adding an Optic is likely the way to go here. It's a super soft shooting gun though, doesn't give me any hotspots as I thought it would with the grip safety. For the target market it's intended, they did quite a bit of good here, making it one pistol you can essentially use for carry and home defense. I did short stroke the reset a couple of times so far, even though it's not super long. It's an interesting gun.

Based on a hundred-ish rounds, mine seems to shoot low as well. At 5-7 yds, it was hitting 1-2" low with the 3 dots aligned. To hit my aim point, I felt like I had to have the front dot just above the rear dots. It was uncomfortable.

It doesn't slow you down in a self defense situation or speed shooting long as you remember to train turning the safety off as you draw. Also the thumb safety can help act as a throttle point for your thumb. And help promote proper grip.

Makes for a nice start of a winter season day for me to see you again with a new S&W I wasn't aware existed! I'll be carrying on with my day with my gen 4 g23 in my waistband ! I once heard you say it's your favorite GK. It is mine!! Thanks Hickok

I just got one a few days ago. It’s quite thin for a double stack (it’s not just that hickok’s hands are big). And yes it’s fiddly to get the slide off. Hope that changes with break in.

I have arthritis, but my hand strength isn't so I can't rack the slide on most pistols. Recoil is another matter though. I've moved to lighter calibers to keep the pain afterwards down to a dull roar.

Thinking of getting this because I want to start Appendix carrying. Don't want to shoot my dk off so the grip safety appeals to me.

Kind of funny to hear Hickok be a little embarrased missing a few shots as he reviews a pistol he doesn't own.

Hickok45 IS the Equalizer. Forget your guns. Just carry him with you wherever you go and you'll be safe.

While I'm generally a fan of S&W, my better half bought the Shield EZ and absolutely hated it. FTF w/basic 115 gr. range ammunition, grip-safety had to have some good pressure to allow it to fire...not something you want in a carry gun or any firearm you're staking your life on. She disliked it so much, she traded it in 6 days later and took the hit. To each their own, I guess. Thanks for the reviews.

I think she should check out the Equalizer. I have one and it doesn't take much at all to engage the grip safety, it's hardly noticeable for me.

I love how @hickok45 labels his targets.. It reminds me of what my father and his best friend range owner did in the 70's to their targets.. AND, in recent years, my father started doing on my targets... Witness signage.. ;). He and this Hick :p are probably around the same age.. Golden year of loading and shooting before KZbin, etc.. Thanks for the smile.. I'm not gonna post up pictures of my groups.. :p

Not a fan of internal hammers with the exception of a good 5.7. Or striker fired like his beloved blocks erm I mean Glocks. I myself will always gravitate towards a good DA/SA pistol. Something like the Sig and most of their P series or a FN FNX .45 tactical or FNX 9 as well as many CZ's. Exposed hammers. But I do have tons of respect for Hickok45. I believe he is the perfect firearm channel for all shooters to follow for a proper and safe learning experience .

Why it's great to hear that it's "too slim" the handle, is for think of this design in 45 auto, or even 10mm. Double stacks of these usually tend to be too large.

I picked one up because the Beretta 9mm I wanted was "Out of Stock" the next day. Got it on sale with some ammo for $550 an was hoping not to spend more then that period!~ Was looking for something that had lil-recoil and the lil slid protection is also a plus, I have been bitten by the slide of a 9mm in the past. An the 3 magazines is also a plus!~

It's my experience that you have to hold the gun perfectly for the grip safety to work. Which is fine if you're at the gun range, but if you're in a gunfight--not so fine.

The copy that I have, you just grip the pistol normally like you would grip any other pistol., and the grip safety is de-activated. Zero instances of malfunction due to the grip safety not deactivating with either dry or range fire. I imagine if one was to grip it so loosely that the grip safety was still activated they probably would just limp wrist into a malfunction if the pistol did fire with such a loose grip.

Hickok45, being a bit grayer than some shooters. Never stated much, how he liked / disliked the easy rack slide. I am sure he has plenty of hand strength, being a seasoned shooter. But, I thought he may have expounded on that point, for his friends older than he is! I like the gun. It checks many of the boxes for me. I want to go handle one, and see just how it feels in the hands.

BTW, you sir may have already covered the topic of racking a stiff slide.. One of my older friends going back about 30 years.. His gf then, and wife now, had issues. He bought large sights (I'd probably call them suppressor class now days)... He taught her how to rack it (It was a steel S&W 9mm - don't recall the model) by using her pocket.. Just push down on the pocket. Me personally.. I will NEVER be caught having to move a slide to shoot.. I don't believe in self defense with a gun I have to charge on the fly... Like I said, you probably have covered this, and most people that really know firearms probably do as well.. Just chatting for those trying to figure out what works best for small hands, etc.

I didn't know AMF still existed. They used to make lots of sporting goods and i believe owned harley davidson for a while. Btw, i have a 80's series 1911 with manual safety that activates the firing pin block. Didn't know that was weird for 1911's. I thought all of them from that era had them.

Thank you for all the information I really enjoyed watching your content. Had a hard time deciding If I should get the shield plus OR or the equalizer as my first gun. But ended up choosing the equalizer just because it already comes the 3 mags out the box, Optic ready from the factory and has the picatinny rail. The grip safety doesn't bother me when dry firing since i'm new to the scene but hopefully I can get it to the range soon for some practice
