I am no gunsmith or handgun expert by any means, but i do know photography. this information is presented clearly (despite the wind which is acknowledged) and to the point. it would have been nice to have a few slower shots of the nut to be removed for replacing the spring, along with a slow and clear closeup of the package of the spring itself. Luckily, camera skills can be learned, much more easily than gun skills. That said, this is one of the best 10mm fix videos for the S&W M&P 2.0 10mm 4 inch barrel that i have found, and i have looked at a whole lot of them. THANK YOU! Please keep up the good work!

Galloway Precision makes RSAs for the M&P 10mm. I bought a 22lb. RSA for mine. Unfortunately, I sent the gun to S&W before I discovered the RSA issue as a likely fix. I received my gun back 7 weeks and 5 days after I shipped it to them. All they did was polish the feedramp and chamber (for a FTF issue). They advised the gun runs fine but didn’t advise what load(s) they shot. I did tell them I shoot Norma spec cartridges exclusively… no 10mm lite! The day after receiving my gun from S&W, I dropped it off w my local metro FFL/Gunsmith to have factory standard height tritium sights and an Apex trigger installed (mainly to rid the terrible amount out take-up to the wall). Eight days later, and a flawless mag of Norma spec 180 FMJ and HP through it for fit, function, and idea of reliability, it’s now ready for the range! Keep in mind, previously, the gun would not fire more than 2-4 rds without a FTF. I have the Galloway Precision RSA on standby if needed.

FWIW even a 26lb. recoil spring still cycles the weak range ammo, while it makes the real stuff easier on the hands and frame. I have a 24lb. captured RSA from Galloway and the non-captured guide rod + 26lb. spring from Springer (along with their extra strong mag springs, which are a must). It makes for a much better setup. Galloway also makes a flat trigger shoe that they call "Morrigan", an inexpensive trigger upgrade. I'm keeping mine, I like it overall, but not happy with S&W on many levels.

I have the same gun same problems. Cleaned mine really well and oiled it where the man well stated and it has been fine with 180 xtps at roughly 1200 fps. Great vid and info though. May have to try that if problem comes back.
@michaeldvorak5556 Жыл бұрын
I think the problem is that the mag lips are too short. They need to support more of the case. The recoil is popping the front of the round up from between the lips, so the round gets jammed against the upper hood of the barrel when being stripped from the mag. The heavier recoil spring is reducing the recoil, which reduces the chance of popping the front end of the round up and out.

Great video on this issue and possible fix. You make a valid point, that S&W probably did make a judgment call that the #17 was adequate spring is the 4” for roughly ~90% range of the 10mm ammo on the market. But that seems like a fatal flaw, and not understanding the market niche for the 10mm. Because like myself, what I often hear everyone say that wants the 10mm, is to carry it as a side piece Hunting, or in backcountry bear defense. Which means a large majority of the marketing for these pistols is specifically in that upper 10% “Hot” ammo. My two cents and thank you for shedding light on this issue and offering up possible solutions and forum here. 👊🏻
@johnw4999 Жыл бұрын
The 10mm Norma Spec cartridges were designed (by men with extensive gunfighting experience) specifically to stop violent human threats. A byproduct is the inherent ability as a trail/bear defensive tool when loaded with hard cast ammunition. Also, the 10mm Norma Spec cartridges are only ~300 fps faster than .40 S&W therefore not as “powerful” as a .357/.41/.44 magnum. What we get are semiautomatic, magazine fed pistols that brings greater firearm capabilities over a revolver. The recurring statement I see online that the 10mm is too powerful for self-defense is ignorance. The 9mm is too anemic, but can be good enough… the .22LR can be good enough as well.
@845ToastT2 жыл бұрын
I was having the same issue with the last round in the magazine on the 4" model. Based on that and the fact it was flinging brass into another dimension, I came to the same conclusion that the slide velocity was too high. I ordered a 22# drop in recoil spring from Galloway Precision (works in the 4" model) and a holosun 507c with aluminum adaptor plate to add weight to the slide. Havent gotten out to shoot it yet, but if it still does it, I have +10 heavy mag springs bookmarked ready to order.

I noticed 2 of 3 times I was on the 2nd to last round in the magazine. I'm really hoping the issue is part of the break in period. I've been reading that the magazine spring may be the cause. Unfortunately I got a 24lb RSA from wolf for my 4.6” and same exact issues. I got mine in December so it’s a very early model. I’m convinced it’s the mags. The feed lips just seem way too short and weak. It’s way too easy to pop that round up without hardly any movement forward. It also seems like the newer the M&P the less I’m hearing of problems. Makes me think S&W changed something after all the failures. Sent mine off to S&W and really hope they fix it.

I ordered 3 Springer Precision 11 coil mag springs for my S&W M&P 10mm M2.0 4.6" pistol, as well as Wolff uncaptured 24-pound and 22-pound round recoil springs and a solid steel guide rod (for the M&P 45 M2.0 4.6", fit is perfect). The SP mag springs are definitely a little more stiff than the M&P factory mag springs. I'm currently testing one, and using the stock M&P mag springs in my other two 15-round 10mm mags. Loading that 15th round is tough, and I can't seat the fully loaded 15-round magazine with a round already in the chamber. The Wolff 24-pound recoil spring did the trick for me for about five weeks, through 400 rounds, but then the spring compressed and now doesn't return the slide fully into battery. Really disappointing as I've used Wolff springs for years as replacements in my SIG Sauer P226 and P229 9mm pistols - in them the Wolff springs have lasted for years and thousands of rounds. I then installed the Wolff 22-pound spring, and despite not even shooting with it yet, that spring has now also compressed, just sitting in my safe for a month (magazine no longer goes fully back into battery). WtF!?! Wolff's formerly excellent QC seems to have gone down the toilet. I'm now running a GlockStore 22-pound captured ISMI-type flat spring for the Glock 20 Gen3 on my 4.6" M&P 10mm, using the stock M&P steel recoil guide rod. So far I've had no issues after about 150 rounds. I've been shooting a healthy mix of various 10mm range ammo, as well as Underwood 180 Gr JHP, 200 Gr & 220 Gr FN HCL, and 140 Gr Xtreme Penetrator ammo. I've detected no difference in function between my two 15-round 10mm mags running the stock springs, versus my one 15-round 10mm mag running the SP 11-coil mag spring, other than loading 15+1 stock versus 14+1 SP. I was able to buy an extra M&P 10mm 15-round magazine from BudsGunShop.com for about $44 plus S&H. It appears that for me the only issues have been with the weak factory 17-pound RSA, and now poor quality uncaptured Wolff 24-pound and 22-pound round recoil springs. I'm calling you out, Wolff Gunsprings.

I'm running a Wolff Gunsprings steel guide rod and uncaptured 24-pound recoil spring set in my new S&W M&P 10mm M2.0 4.6" pistol (Wolff item #54624, made for the M&P 45 ACP 4.6", cost me $30 plus S&H). The stock steel guide rod & captured recoil spring assembly has been relagated to my range bag. IMHO, it's only good for basic 10mm range ammo, or else if I'm going to shoot some 40 S&W. With the Wolff upgrade, functionality has been flawless with Remington UMC 180 Gr FN FMJ (1,150 FPS w/ 528 FtLBs of muzzle energy). Lobs the spent brass 6+ feet to my 3~5 o'clock. Soft, makes my 10mm feel like it's shooting only 9mm +P ammo. I'm also enjoying flawless performance shooting Underwood 10mm 180 Gr Nosler JHP (1,250 FPS w/ 624 FtLBs of muzzle energy), and Underwood 10mm 200 Gr FN HCL Hi-Tek Coated (1,250 FPS w/ 694 FtLBs of muzzle energy). Good things! 👍

Close the feed lips more on your magazines. Doesn't take much, but it does take a hammer to do it. That resolved my jamming issues. But now my mags are dropping on higher power loads.

@@rockymntdan1That’s so shitty to deal with… I’ve dealt with a few mag drops already.. you shouldn’t have to deal with this shit from a gun that comes from a reputable brand.. selling this pos and getting myself a Glock 40. Why the hell not..
@rockymntdan1 Жыл бұрын
@@Jc-ks5lx Yep; why I won't ever purchase Smith & Wesson again. Ever. Ever EVER. And again I discovered it is a simple problem. The magazines are designed so tight that any bullet greater than 180 grain pushes on the release button. Stupid silly to rectify, but their lack of concern and avoidance of responsibility only proves to worsen the issue. We don't expect anyone to be perfect, just own up to it and fix it.
@Jc-ks5lx Жыл бұрын
@@rockymntdan1 Well said! If only I would’ve known prior to buying this gun.. this is my first and last S&W... M&P’s and shields have had a pretty rock solid reputation so I bought one these 10mm thinking that it would be able to go through hell and back.. I guess not.. also like you said, the fact that S&W hasn’t had the decency to actually address that these 10mm’s in particular have some issues is ridiculous. If I wanted something to conceal going around town, I’ll use a 9mm. But in the bush, I damn well expect an M&P of all guns, (chambered in ANYTHING), to perform regardless of what I’m sending through it.. Edit: and ya know what? It’s a damn shame because the gun itself is beautiful and the ergonomics rival the P30 and PPQ. I was really looking forward to having this as my go to sidearm when I’m backpacking.

@@dennis1979gm Are you still running the glock spring? And have you had any issues? I ordered a 24lb spring and guide rod assembly from Gallaway precision that was supposed to be made to work with the 4" m&p 10mm. But unfortunately it is not working out. It binds and drags in the frame. I have been in communication with Gallaway about this issue, to which they are basically pointing fingers elsewhere saying "our part is not the problem". I informed them that i have taken the 24lb spring from my g40 "which is actually a gen3 g20 spring" and installed it on the factory guide rod and it doesn't bind or drag. To which they replied that running a 24lb g20 spring in the 4" m&p would cause damage to the locking block because of the stack height of the compressed spring was too long. Wondering if you have any insight on this? I haven't actually fired the m&p 10mm in this configuration yet
@dennis1979gm Жыл бұрын
Well I'm not a professional like Gallaway precision but mine has been running fine with the Glock spring on the factory M&P guide rod. It's still ticking and I haven't seen any abnormal wear anywhere yet?

@@dennis1979gm Thanks for the reply, i really appreciate it. And for whomever else might read this comment that is contemplating using a g20 spring, I would say "proceed with caution"............ I am going to run with the particular spring that i currently have. BUT!!! i now understand why Gallaway Precision recommends against it. I am a machinist and have a many precision measuring instruments at my disposal. I just got done taking many measurements multiple times just to verify the amount of clearance, stack height of the compressed spring, actual distance of travel from the recoil lug on the slide to where it would contact the frame which would be it's maximum amount of possible travel. As it turns out "my spring" in "my gun" when fully compressed measures only .015 less than the amount of slide travel that is available. Snd not saying anyone is stupid, but .015 is only fifteen thousandths of an inch, or the thickness of five sheets of notebook paper. That's not much clearance. And given the fact that there are minor fluctuations in dimensions from one batch of parts to the next I'd say that it would in fact be possible due to tolerance stacking that you could end up with a situation where the stack height of a given spring could exceed the amount of travel that you actually have to work with. Resulting in the impact of the slide being transferred to the takedown lever and locking block vs stopping when the recoil lug impacts the steel insert in the frame. Which theoretically could end up damaging the firearm. But as for me and my spring and my gun..........I'm going to roll with it.

@dennis1979gm any chance you can post a link to where you got your spring? or the ISMI part number? I just got an ISMI RS 24 spring and it's like 3 times the length of the guide rod for the 4" s&w. It's 30% longer than the stock s&w spring. Getting it on the guide rod is incredibly difficult and probably 90% compressed. I'm so sick of this m&p piece of junk, might just pick up a different 10mm at this point. Such a shame my 9mm m&p is perfect.

If you shoot hot 10mm and don't want to tinker I would say the 4.6 will give you less issues without spring change. The 4.6 also benefits some with a 22# spring and guide rod change. They just simply under sprung them for really hot loads.
