Never caught onto any of the S&W pistols - apart from the M&P until recently. Have to admit the design - esp the squared (not rounded) trigger guard, full hammer, high profile rear sights, shorter length makes this a hot looking piece!

The very first handgun that I wanted to buy was a 5906, way back in the late 80s. I just could not afford to get one. Last week, a local gunstore posted an ad in a local gun forum for a 5906 that looks exactly like this. In less than 5 minutes, I have called the store and have put a deposit in it. The following day, I stopped over at the store and saw it for the first time. It looks almost brand new with the exception that it does not have the box and the original mag. I went to a gunshow that same weekend and picked up one original mag and one Mecgar mag. I am picking it up this coming Friday. Mine has a serial number starting at TCK.

This is the best 5906 review I have seen on KZbin! I was not aware of the influence the P38 had on these guns, but I can see it. Probably some Hi-Power in there too. Love this pistol so much, it's my favorite semi-automatic alongside the Beretta 92FS and the older model SIG-Sauer P226. It has interesting mags and colorful followers, too, like 14 or 13 round capacity in addition to the normal 15. I like the other third gen Smiths like the 5903 but to me the 5906 was king with the hefty yet relatively light steel frame. I'm still upset with S&W for stopping production on such a long-running and respected series of handguns to copy Glock.

Thanks for watching! I like the gun other than the sights being weird like I mention. But if I had to carry it all day I would definitely prefer a polymer frame and the safety is very pointy for IWB carry. However for target/range work the weight and barrel lockup make for a very accurate gun.

Great review and good intro of history of the S&W line. We originally carried Model 39's and then Model 59's with ISP. Model 59 being the father of the 5906 in your hand. I still have my 59 and also the 5906. Great range gun! Again, great review of a great line of guns. -Ranger

Same here! I'm very interested in handguns from the 70s and 80s such as the sw 5906. But I have mixed feelings about having the safety on the slide. Especially when the safety is right but the slide cut outs where your fingers grip the slide.

My father had one of these, but sometime around 2013 or 2014 it was stolen along with all of his other firearms. They took everything in the house, including the cabinets off of the walls. I found that out the day before his funeral in 2016. So somewhere out there someone bought a stolen 5906. The people were arrested but they didn't have any of the stolen items, they had apparently sold off everything sometime before Police found them.

I have a S&W Model 5946. Which is a newer version of this weapon. I got mine brand new in 1993. It was a LE weapon and still fires fantastically today. I know the NYPD was still offering the Model 5946 up until about 7 years ago. I don't know if they still offer this gun today or a version of it. I can tell you that other than the extremely long trigger pull, the gun is great. I have put thousands of rounds through this weapon and it has almost zero issues.I can count on one hand the amount of misfires, etc.. My gun has no safety at all, I'm sure that was the LE model only. Like I said, no issues and no problems with the sights either. I have the stock sites but I know the NYPD switched to night sights and I never changed mine over. That may be the answer to your weapon shooting low. Mine shoots extremely accurately and always has. Great American weapon that still looks brand new. The gun is a bit heavy though and also isn't made for someone with smaller hands. My gun is made more for a person with decent size hands and is able to deal with a long and strong trigger pull. I highly recommend this handgun.

They are definitely tanks, only difference between the 2 is yours is a double action only and you don't have the safety lever on the slide. I have a similar police issue DOA Beretta 96 that I shot in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qH-tdmOjgNFprqs I really like the grips on the 5906 they fit my hand well. Neatest were the performance center special 5906s here is an accuracy test of one. www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/10/12/exclusive-testing-worlds-accurate-pistols-part/

Great to hear from you, excellent video. Yes, they are tanks for sure. I am handing mine down to my son and hopefully he will take great care of it as well. I did change to Pachmayer grips years ago and don't regret that. The Pachmayers are just so much more comfortable, especially in the cold. The Pachmayers also offer a positive for safety, they have a steel plate under the rubber where the tang is. The S&W plastic grips could break back there if dropped or when struggling with a perp and that could cause the spring under the grips to not function and then cause the weapon not to function. I didn't even know about that until I watched a Pachmayer grip video very recently. I changed them for comfort so that was a bit of extra news that I thought was good. I am more of a rifle guy in my older age and really only use my handguns for personal protection and teaching the kids how to shoot and be responsible gun owners along with being safe. Nice to hear from you. Thank you and God bless.

Nice review. I have one with the rounded trigger guard. Mine also has the extraction problem but I have one magazine that shoots 100% (I have a few non standard mags tat don't ork well). I meant to buy the 5903 which is lighter aluminum frame but over all the 5906 when operating proper is a tack driver. Surprisingly because the trigger is on the spongy side. But with my fixed sights it is as good as any modern pistol.

FWIW they are supposedly one of the most accurate 9mms around. I can;t find it but I saw an accuracy test of a bunch of service pistols somewhere and the 5906 beat everything else. Obviusly YMMV but the lockup is very tight and the weight should help keep shots in a nice group. Biggest issue is the POI/=POA.

I'm relatively new to the gun world as I didn't buy my first gun and get into shooting until the last 6 years or so but I've always liked guns and I must say I find it strange how these were so popular in the late 80's to early 90's (at least I heard they were popular) yet you don't really see them around or hear people talking about them anymore today. The Beretta 92 is still around and still fairly popular and I guess that's just because the Army adopted it and it was poplar in 80's action movies like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. Someone else in the comments mentioned the Ruger P95 and I guess in a similar way the Ruger was a popular 9mm with police before the Glock took over and now they aren't so popular anymore. The Ruger was never popular in movies like the 92 but I still see or hear about the odd one today unlike these! But these 5906 pistols have aged well, they still look great and modern even today. The Ruger... well I like Ruger but even I'll admit the P series didn't age so well. They don't look nearly as good as this guy here!
@GunAndShotTV
@GunAndShotTV 8 жыл бұрын
The majority of cops were using revolvers up until the 1980s-90s. I think many departments only switched once the price/capacity/weight of the Glock made upgrading from revolvers a clear gain. So while these were commonly used as police guns I don't think they sold huge numbers on the civilian market and as such their aren't that many floating around. The Rugers changed model numbers so often I don't see them as ever getting much steam. They have a total 80s retro future look going on and I could see them as props in a Robocop movie.

Strange nobody commented on the fact that these guns were made/sold from 1989 till 1999, so 1986 seems too early. TCB serials were probably made in 1989, altough I think there were guns produced (not sold) in 1988. I don't think the sights are a good indication of how old these 5906s are, I believe for a time, a range of sights (fixed/novak/adjustable) were available. I've shot one with rounded trigger guard and a adjustable sight. It was from 1991, I believe. Funny thing is that it's predecessor, the 659, started out with a rounded trigger guard, and then changed to square, while with the 5906 they eventually changed back to rounded. Clearly, ergonomics are susceptible to fashion trends, too😊.

@mdhsabh
@mdhsabh 4 жыл бұрын
Impact point follows the back sight. Raise the rear sight means you have to lower the back of the gun for the same sight picture, effectively raising the front and the impact point. Likewise, move the rear sight to the left, and you have to move the grip to the right to get the same picture, moving the impact point to the left.

They aren't really changing the name of the gun company, they are changing the name of the holding company that owns the gun company. So American Outdoor Brands will still make Smith and Wesson guns. But their other items will no longer necessarily be branded S&W. Kind of like when OLIN owned Winchester, they still sold the guns under the Winchester brand. The only major difference is what it says on the employee's payroll checks.
