S.Y.N.C. (A VRChat Short Film) (2022)

This is S.Y.N.C.
A VRChat Short Film captured ENTIRELY in virtual reality.
This is my very first film captured in this medium and I am very happy with the results. This is a film that features martial arts that are performed in real-time to keep it authentic, and fresh. The film started production late June and underwent 4 consecutive days of non-stop filming. This was captured with only a SINGLE body actor, myself.
This film utilized a (now retired) FreezeFrame mod which allowed myself to keep all the fights low-latency and the initial production significantly easier.

Never have I ever seen a vrchat short film until now. It's good. The choreography is good. The fight scenes flowed well. It looked like it was actually happening. The main character, which I presume is you, kinda sounds like Leon. The voice acting is great. The suspense, the thrill, the unknowing of what could happen at every turn. It's great that you can tell what the characters are thinking without actually hearing the words. The visible confusion, or rather, it's like the character silently saying, "How's that going to help"? when Genie says "Don't die". The music adds to the greatness of this. I think it's fantastic when the main character pulls out his swords like the hidden blades from Assassins Creed. Again, I can't stress this enough, the animations look like actual game cutscenes. It's so good.

I wasn't aware you could actually use it like this, clearly you used it the best way possible and it came out excellent !. DAMN, I haven't even finished it yet, I'm pretty early into this, less than 5 minutes in, but yet THIS IS SO FUCKING GOOD. AND THE FACT THERE'S A *LONG* FIGHT SCENE?? Excellent short film! Definitely worth the wait and I loved watching the process of it all coming together over on Twitter! The choreography was excellent as many have said, but I do think the pacing and timing between each move was inconsistent and didn't quite flow naturally. A way you could fix this for future projects is cut down the amount of time characters look at each other when one falls down (no more than 3 seconds) and such or speed up the footage, otherwise it feels like both are just a bit too idle and simply waiting, you'll also want it to be close matching to the tempo or beat of the music to have more of an audience impact. Obviously, this is much more difficult in VR so that's why it's already very impressive you were able to utilize all the tools/mods we had during the filming of this. The voice acting was excellent in the calm areas, but could use a bit more emotion/exaggeration during fight scenes, would need to sound like heavily breathed or exerting energy considering all the fast movements, make sure you're VA's take the exercises to achieve this level of believability in their voice work. That being said, the audio levels of the voices were a bit inconsistent, I had to turn up my volume a couple times during Alpha and the Rex's low speaking parts, and back down again during Genie's lines being much louder, try to target a certain db audio level for voices, I find the best to be around -8db and work everything else from there. The foley, sfx, ambience and music were excellent! That can be a long and tedious process but it really payed off in this short! While I absolute LOVE choice based videos/games, the cutoff with the quote felt very abrupt and took my attention away for a couple seconds. I understand it as a way to influence the choice we make a bit, but I feel it would be much more earned and appropriate at the end of each choice to give the viewer something to think about, words for thought after they've watched. Sorry to sound like a college professor, just wanted to give personal feedback so that your next project is even better than this one! This short film was very well done and incredible to see! Be proud of yourself and everything you've done for this project! The hard work definitely paid off and I enjoyed it quite a lot! Even found myself to laugh at most of the jokes! Amazing work my dude! 💙💙💙

Personally, I would think recording the choreography slowly and then speeding it up would be the better option, because that might also minimize the visual artifacts from the imperfect VR tracking. But that's just my input as someone that knows literally nothing about this stuff. To the maker: this film was super well done and I actually really enjoyed watching it. Good job!

Just saw it. It's very impressive that it feels like a real movie. It flowed well, there was mystery, is very fun to watch. Also, it was intentionally funny. Since 2018 I've been on VR chat on and off, and I didn't think we'd progress so fast into Ready Player One territory. I watched this last night while at the VRC New Years 2023 world, and I have to say. The amount of time and effort put into this cinematic masterpiece is not only striking and pleasing to watch; but the choreography is insanely impressive! Phenomenal, even! holy cow. camera work is great, the script is good too. Genie's voice acting is phenomenal, Alpha's voice acting is a bit dry and mismatched though, but i can tell he's on the right track. There are moments where his line deliveries perform a lot better than average. This is a hugely challenging medium and i am astounded it turned out so well. huge props.

Awesome, I would like to change a little details that some fight have, like one with katanas, he have two but there’s a moment when he only uses one when he have the opportunity to kill the “proto-gonist” (sorry I rlly needed to do that joke), but having in count that this is Vrc, damn this shit is good. (Is hard for me to explain myself better, I’m from Spain, I wanna talk about scenography buy my skills are not that good for writing all that.)
